OFFICIAL Jahream Bula #269

Im really off Bula, but to try and be fair, the guy is a centre being forced to play fullback, and is quiet as a mouse.Thats what he played all his life. I know people get obsessed with playing guys in positions that reflect their pay, but for me thats utter stupidity. You take pay out of it and just play your best team. Bula at right centre and Averillo fullback.
The bloke can’t tackle, no point putting him in the front line

Bula is lacking acceleration off the mark. I also dont recall seeing him break a tackle in god knows how long. He is 187cm and 93kg, so he isnt small and skinny.

I saw someone else post that Terrell runs hard but stops when he hits the defensive line. If we as fans can see it, surely the coaching staff can too? So why does nothing change?
Twal had been stopping at the line also, but maybe due to carrying injury?

He's obviously carrying an injury impacting his game. It was mentioned on the weekend by one of the commentary team. It's restricting him sufficiently that he cannot get through those gaps.
Why is Bula delaying shoulder surgery?
Fiji more important than getting it done and presenting fully fit for the start of the 2027 season???

There will be a few Tigers players who go to PNG, and I reckon Bula may be one of them.

I'm still adamant that Api will go to Perth, and the Fainu brothers may all be gone by the 2028 season.

Samuela is probably the only one of the three who has really shown promise. The brothers want to stay together, as they did at Manly, but it becomes an issue if one of them leaves.

No acceleration for a centre.
Maybe a wing. Would maybe have time to get into stride before getting the ball?

Really dissatisfied in Bula this year regardless of injuries. He just can’t break the line. As a support player in open space and chasing through bombs he is good but every other part of the fullback role be it tackle busts, ball playing, speed to create a chance etc feel like they have gone backwards this year. Even his runs returning the footy and support play is pedestrian at best.

All the talk at the start of the year was about his speed and acceleration. He shows nothing of it unless he has a wind up.

The amount he is being paid compared to the on field performance really winds me up. 😡

Time to ditch your crystal ball

Thought I'd quote myself here and say well done to Bula today. His performance gave me hope that once his shoulder is fixed and he has decent halves he will be good. I thought he was great today.

Anyone else get the shits when he rarely ever comes away with the ball on a 1v1 attacking kick?

His leaping should be his biggest asset with a basketball background, but it hardly ever pays off

Anyways he was pretty good today, about the level we need him to be at every week if we are ever competitive

There's been a bit of chat about Bula in the Signing, Suggestions and Rumours thread regarding his performance this season. Some are supporters and others are not so kind in their assessament.

There was a deep dive done on this part way through the season "Is Jahream Bula a Million Dollar Myth?" that was searching for answers in relation to his form post contract signature. Without regurgitating the whole thread there was no discernable change in running meters but his line break assists and tackle efficiency went down, as you would expect from someone with a shoulder injury. My take at the time is that he should have gone in the surgery at that time. I trust that the rumours are true and he is in having it done now in preparation for the 2027 pre season. If you want a refresh of the detail you can find it by clicking the link here.

Reflecting on the Deep Dive there are a couple of things that jump to mind that weren't clear to me when I pulled that together as I was focussed on Bula and not what else was happening around him. Things that I trust will see his attacking form improve in 2027. The key changes are the return of KPP which should provide a point of attack for him on the right and the loss of Luai which will make it much easier timing wise for him on the left.

It surprised me, given the unpredictability of Benji Marshall the player, that apart from May and Sam F to a lesser extent, we found difficulty consistently running the lines to support Luai's eyes up and all over the shop style. That is a thing of the past and I don't want to dwell on it too much; but, with KPPs injury on the right combined with AD's average passing game and the loss of Taylan May on the left combined with Luai's chook like attacking lines, I expect many of the half chances pre injury dried up. Where he was able to poke his head through the line before he was injured he was constantly caught in the defence post injury.

From the armchair analysis it is impossible to know how much the shoulder injury attributed to his drop off in line breaks and line break assists and how much was related to the loss of two key points of attack. The thing that does stand out to me now though is that the good fullbacks also have the ability to break the line. A strength and conditioning aspect of Bula's game that I think needs some work.

On the other side of the pill it is hard to knock his effort given the shoulder injury. I have heard many discuss his vision in defence and how well he talks. However, to me, he appears to be in the right place but at the worong time (just too late). This could be due to him operating behind a sieve like defence in the middle third of the season where he had no trust in what was in front of him. His anticipation and trust clearly needs some work. I trust that our new defensive coach addresses both areas.

He has shown glimpses of a short kicking game. If he can put that arrow into his attacking quiver he will become a more rounded attacking threat. I would like to see some individual development of him in that area.

2026 was not a great season for him, but he was clearly playing with an injury. If the rumour that he has opted for surgery over the World Cup opportunity is true that is a great opportunity for him as an individual and for the playing group to develop his game.
