Wests Tigers talk turkey with prized Lion Graham
November 6, 2010

ENGLAND captain James Graham's desire to play in the NRL has been laid bare after the prop met with Wests Tigers officials in Auckland this week.

Graham held preliminary talks with Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys and recruitment manager Warren McDonnell, who organised the meeting with the St Helens player's Australian manager David Riolo.

Humphreys stressed that he was in Auckland with other officials for several meetings, but also made clear his desire to entice Graham to the club when his contract with the Super League club ends next year.

"James flagged with [St Helens] that he was going to take the opportunity to chat to some Australian clubs while he's out this way . . . from the fans' point of view they'd be happy we would be having a chat," Humphreys said.

Graham has already been linked with Penrith, the Warriors and Sydney Roosters, whose coach Brian Smith is a member of the England coaching staff.

Having hired an Australian agent to handle his affairs, there is little doubt about his desire to join a strong English contingent in the NRL in 2012.

The Tigers have had success with Gareth Ellis, which could be a factor in Graham's decision, while Souths might also be interested in the 25-year-old given the form of Sam Burgess this year. "It's clear he's got a genuine desire to play in the NRL and he's had that for some time," Humphreys said. "He's also been a one-club man at St Helens . . . But I would say it's highly likely he'll [play] in the NRL at some stage."

Cunno, people play for the Wests Tigers for the pride of the club and jersey. We dont need Money Bags to compete, at the Wests Tigers, we instill LOYALTY!!!

If Sheens gets Graham, we should sign Sheens for LIFE!!! :wahoo:

It's what we do Watto….get over it!!!!!!

The Humph collected a nice cheque for playing a semi at the SFS from the NRL that will be more than enough to cover Graham's wages

Rusty got Burgess for $150k this year,we were offering way more,so you do the maths, hope he is an Ellis type of guy and comes anyway.

Burgess might be on $150k as part of the salary cap but he would be getting a big top up from private sponsors, so do we have the private sponsor(s) to top up for Graham?

Typical QLDer, amused by the notion of loyalty.

Don't worry, mate, all the QLD grubs who've come into the comp in the last 20 years have done away with widespread loyalty.

Hopefully your assumption is correct and the WT club has access to plenty of money. I read elsewhere on this Forum that Humphreys was in NZ for other meetings as well, taking the opportunity to meet with Graham while there is astute and shows interest but it doesn't necessarily mean WT will win the bidding and has the means to do so.

Humph is probably the best operator in the NRL and I doubt you'd find a smarter business mind than him out of all the CEO's in the NRL. He'll wipe the floor with any club in business manouvering and basically getting what he wants. In saying that, the race to sign James Graham is looking better for us each day. Our biggest rivals Souths are putting themselves out of the running each day with what is happening with Greg Inglis. Surely once they sign him they wont have room to sign him. The only other clubs interested is Penrith, Roosters and Newcastle and all they have is money which is something we have as well. I'm quietly confident that we're red hot favorites to sign him.

With the Inglis situation…perhaps we have a small chance of signing the services of Roy for a bargain! Ok not a great chance...but still an chance! Would he be a good signing, would people be happy with that?
