Already done an ACL, gets head hunted every game. Big risk IMO.

What do you think would be a reasonable length extension ..

When is his deal finished? 2017? If so, three years.

That makes it end 2020..seems that risk would still be there..

Every contract is a risk Geo, the longer the contract goes the risk is exponential. Manly have performed the stupidest contract signing of all time with DCE.

We've holed ourselves big time with long & backloaded contracts and we're only just starting to come out of that mess. Why start again?

I think you need to take the risk depending on the nature and skill of the player.

It sounds like CL has worked with the club, in his contract extension, to repay their commitment to him over the years. That's because of the type of bloke he is.

Given the significant paycut (and management debarcle) that Teddy went through to still stay, says a lot about him. As pascoe said "He represents all the values we hold dearly as an organisation"

The nature of the guy to work with the club when situations dictate is a big factor.

If anyone in the team deserves some faith and trust, it's him.

Early in his career Benji seemed to pop his shoulder every time he ran onto the field, but that didn't stop him from carrying the franchise for the best part of a decade.

Imagine if we listened to the naysayers and let him go early in his career!

When you have somebody on your books with the type of talent Tedesco has (and Benji had), you pull out all stops and go for broke. You definitely don't let players like Teddy go as he is about to enter the peak of his career.

I say to Pascoe and Buckets …go for it, because its your heads in the noose if Teddy ends up in another team's colours.

Pascoe stated about a month ago that he doesn't want all our top players contracts ended at the same time.
most of our squad contracts were up at the end of 2017 until all these new signings started to kicked off last month.
So to make them staggered , someone has to sign a 5 years deal. mos-well be Teddy. He's our best player.

I really don't know. But it's going to take a lot to hold off the roosters. He's totally committed to us in the past and certainly paid the price to stay with us until now.

I don't think the Roosters will go all in for him. Latrell Mitchell is going to be bloody good and they could better strengthen their squad in other areas with the sort of stupid money that Teddy will command. I think Souths and the Bulldogs are the biggest threats at this point.

Perfect example, damned if you do, damned if you dont!

If we sign him to 2021, and in the last couple years for whatever reason he is not the player he was, we will hear fans calling the management idiots blah, blah, blah

If we only sign him to 2019 or something, and he looks to go, we will saying why didnt they sign him up long term when they had the chance!

Decisions are easy to criticise in hindsight, hard to make in advance.

Id lock him in. I was also happy when they locked Lawrence in. But there is always the risk.

Agree with the concern about contract length.

IIRC, the only players we've signed to 5 year contracts have been Lawrence, Farah, and Marshall. Each one we tried to move on after 2-3 years.

I couldn't imagine this happening with Tedesco as he's our best player by an absolute mile, but at the time I didn't think it would happen to the other 3.

It might not be their preference to sign him for as long as 4 or 5 years but if they want to stagger the expiry dates of the play makers contracts they may have to. They are trying to keep Brooks, Moses and Teddy and they currently all expire in 2017, so to stagger you'd be looking at either 2, 3 and 4 year deals or 3, 4 and 5 year deals (Teddy with the longest in either case).

I'm confident he will stay. Back flipped out of the raiders deal last time because he realized (with farahs help) that money isn't everything and he seems extremely happy with that decision and seems very happy at the tiger's. As long as the tiger's put a good deal on the table i think he will be happy to sign without looking around too much to see what is on offer. I think it's the halves contracts that will be played out in the media again that will have this forum on edge again but i hope not. As much as I would like them to stay if they can't work something out with the tiger's just tell the club no and look elsewhere. Don't want to go through all that nonsense again

We have holed ourselves with backloaded contracts paying overs for players either in the decline of their careers or figures based on potential…that has come to a end..

As you rightly say signing any player is risky when injuries could occur..but you can't make decisions based on that otherwise you wouldn't sign anyone past a year..

Tedesco is a Marquee Once in a Generation Player...he will command huge $$$ where ever he goes....He is a player you can build a Club around both on and off the field...Locking him with a year still to run on his current contract wether for 3 or 4 more years sends a positive message to the rest of the current squad as well as any potential future signings..

It's a no brainer IMO...

Wow - shocked by some who support signing a marquee player for five years.
In light of recent events in doing so I would say Teddys manager will have us over a barrel. History repeating itself.

The hardest thing will be having the cap space and the ability to get TPA's in order to build a team around him, and I am sure he will not put pen to paper without knowing he will be playing in a team that has a real chance to win a comp.

When your as good as Teddy money doesn't come into it as all the offers will be big and juicy, its all about playing in a team that will give you the best chance to achieve your dreams

as good as Teddy is, a three year deal would be best and four year max. A year in the NRL is a long time and four years is a eternity

Why should Teddy be loyal to the club if supporters are too scared to give him a 4 year deal because he may lose form?

I would definitely give him a 4 year deal and even a 5 year deal. He should stay loyal though because we will lynch him if he doesn't.

Uhhhh, because the supporters don't run the club?

What i mean is, why do supporters expect loyalty from someone that they can't give loyalty to.

For instance, if Teddy left everyone would call for him to see out the season in NSW Cup and call him unloyal etc.

I don't expect loyalty from him. I expect that we table a sensible offer commensurate for his ability and if he is happy with it he'll take it up.

Same as last time around. He was offered better money so he took it, I actually supported him doing it because I, and I would suspect many others on this forum, have done the same themselves.
