OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

The NRL thrives on off field stuff as much as the on field. The test is how long fans are prepared to support a system that tests their commitment to clubs when it is "loyalty" that keeps the fan engaged and the need to feel at some point you will reap the benefits of that.

Looking at the increase in crowds and ratings since Covid ..I would suggest things won’t be changing anytime soon …

My own perceptions now of the Sydney media …the NRL dominates the Sporting landscape more than ever( and I’ve been around for a while) … the other sports don’t get much of a look in trying to compete with this never ending media focus on these NRL “drama’ stories ..I mean the AFL have now spent hundreds of million trying to establish the Giants in Western Sydney, and you would barely know they exist , let alone be able to name a player

Problem for us WT fans ..these stories concern us much more than our one eighteenth share should dictate … when the story concerns another team or player ..I lap it up and want every detail..

Yep, the trash media LOVE the Wests Tigers.....

Seems to me that the Chiefs will effectively have a cap that's about 40% higher than everyone else's. No one will be able to compete with the money they'll be able to pay. It looks like the NRL is creating another Storm - giving the new team every advantage to embed its expansion.

Logically, the Chiefs should have a much reduced cap to make up for the massive advantage of being tax-free.
The TAX free thing for PNG is a GOVT to GOVT thing....The NRL didn't do this ....

Let’s see what sort of coach Benji is. Follow the Galvin plan. No commitment, don’t want to be here, you are free to go at the end of the year.

Otherwise enjoy NSW cup. It is a disgrace we are paying him next year, let alone entertaining keeping him as captain.

If he is going to continue to be a spokesperson for the club, can we at least force him to wear a clown outfit? That truly represents the circus this club is.
What are you talking about ? So much hyperbole and self indulgence in that post .

There was a segment on SEN about this today (Tuesday). You can’t be a resident of Aus for tax purposes which means you must sell your house and close your bank accounts. Must leave for at least 2 years (but can visit). A bit of other stuff I can’t remember.
As a non-resident you also don't get free access to Australian hospitals, medicare and private health insurance for your wife and kids. Blow a knee out in PNG and find out how good their health care system is. No next day op with the top surgeon. You wouldnt want to be on the NRL min or T and T..

Initially there will be plenty of players interested in the Tax free dollars being offered by the Chiefs. It’s also something that will affect all franchises not just ours, but I think things will settle down after a year or two. As the word gets around about the life style your forced to endure in PNG
I just went on to the ATO website which has a tool to determine if you have to pay Australian tax if you work ovetseas. Living in employer provided accommodation. Returning to Australia regularly. Eventually returning to Australia. Bad news coming.

This is a good outcome, decision made, time to prepare and a bucket load of cash. Perhaps the signings we have been waiting to hear about have been dependent on a bucket of gold being available. Keeping the lid tight on this from the club and Romey is great and shows maturity. This is our story to manage now - deal a blow to the Sharkies on Sunday and the cyle is broken - lose and it will be because of Luai's defection.

Rubbish media, how we manage the contracts of May and Taruva and the development of our next 6/7 (and potentially 1) is the real story here.

The positivity will change vastly if what started as a good season takes a turn for the worst.
Its not Luai leaving that's the problem it's the negotiating during a season.
They are human it's a distraction to Luai and the players around him and if you think players are immune to the noise you are kidding yourself.

Sorry man cant agree with you here.
We need to act professional and utilise luai as much as we can whilst we have him.
He is leaving on good terms- lets keep it that way.

Where have you heard he doesn’t want to be here? He is contracted until end of 2027. If you push him out half the team will agitate.

I was thinking the same thing over because any income I make in the US (technically) needs to be declared in Aus ie for residency purposes. How are the player managers gonna handle this one?
We all know that jellyfish Albo wants his cut.

So all Fiji Tonga Samoa etc would have to do if they want a fully funded team in the nrl is to invite China over for talks about a Chinese naval base on the island and they will get a team with all the perks as png did

China has been looking at this already. Very smart move using sport as diplomacy. Fiji, Tonga and Samoa have mentioned they want help with Rugby pathways and development. We already have a foreign aid budget (don’t think it includes sport). Local Rugby if part of the fabric of society and culture in Fiji. I’ve been to Rugby games over there, it’s a huge part of the lifestyle of the country. Every afternoon the are games of touch football on the beaches. They watch a lot of NRL, Village stores have TV with games on loop all week. It makes sense to tap into this as we have a common bond over sport.
