OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

Interesting that you say Wests-Ts chose Giles over Stone as he “looked more likely”.
Stone was chosen in the Australian Schools team 2014 and the NSW under 18s in 2015 (Giles made neither side), so plenty of other judges saw it differently.

Both those sides are a long way from 20's.
I liked them both, But if I was picking - I'd have picked Giles as well.
(Look through the old threads here - Most rated Giles better than Stone)
Might have something to do with Parra offering Stone a deal as well, Who Knows?

Can't remember what Injury Giles got (I wanna say Hammy)
Remember he was gone forever, But it slowed him up in a season where he'd probably have debuted.
Just never came back.

I also remember Daniel Peck being the more rated of him and Liddle.
Liddle will play 200+ games, with Peck not being close to 1.
- Just the way it goes.

Back to your original point - You were talking about Tumeth,
So digging out Junior Rep stats to support that narrative is kind of counter productive.
I've never seen anything from Tumeth that would suggest he'd ever make it as an NRL player
(Jnr Reps included)

Are we paying Luai 1.2, 1.3 or 1.4 million per season ?
I keep seeing different figures being thrown up and at 1.2 million you would think it’s a fair chance he will eventually provide us with that type of value on game days, but if it’s 1.3 or 1.4 it gets harder to see if we will get value for that type of money.
1.2m
only player atm on 1.4 is ponga, soon to be dylan brown

We need forwards first and depth. Tanah Boyd showed us that you can get a steal of a half back rather then paying overs of you have the forward pack! I rather have Tanah Boyd with new forwards then luai with our current pack, results showed this to be true

So a guy who started against us in his 1st game of NRL this year who has been struggling for years is now worthy to be our 1st choice option that gets us to play finals footy. Sounds like you have been involved in our recruitment strategy of past years.

And who do we get forwards wise? The market is slim pickings, we have roster spots and cash without getting rid of Luai and we haven’t filled the roles.

He hasn’t been amazing by any stretch, but who has to be honest. Between him and Api who come from winning systems and have played at the highest level, it’s easy to point the finger at the club. There’s only so much 2 quality players can do in a team full of nuffies. In our case I’d say we have about 4-5 quality first graders (Luai, Api, Bula, May and Pole when he feels like it)
The rest are average, too young to tell yet or just making up the numbers.

Must be great coming into a forward pack who arguably is the biggest in the comp, backed up by a reserves team that’s won about 14 on the trot… any half coming into that warriors pack would have been well looked after

You never see our forwards dominate like other teams. They hold their own for a bit then get worn down because of their size, until this changes we’ll always play off the back foot

Exactly.
KPP is the best we can attract atm...theyre hardly knocking the door down
Bottom line is that Benji almost certainly remains the most appealing aspect of WT for reasonable quality players who would have options. I shudder to think how bad our recruitment for this season would have been without him as basically our only draw card.

We probably would have signed Brad Schneider & Chad Townsend and promoted a couple reserve grader plodders and called it a day without benji

I find it interesting that Benji is such a big draw card for quality players to want to sign with us. It’s not like he has great coaching credentials so what’s the attraction? Family hangis?

Yeah that’s a fair point about Tumeth as others did rate him (NSW under 19s). Like you however, I never understood the hype around Tumeth.

If what you say is correct - its typical Wests-Ts form to prioritise Giles over Stone ... and end up with neither 🤣.

Re’ Dan Peck - he’s playing for The Entrance Tigers this year in the Newcastle Comp - still looking sharp 👍

Was good today, got us in position for the FG when he almost scored the breakaway try, set up his centre and winger over and over again, kicking game still needs work but otherwise was really good in a tough week with him and a bunch of others being sick all week
Nobody appreciates these finer details, he also chased and chopped down Sami otherwise he scores a long range try

I was really hoping he scored that try at the end, but getting the team in a position to get the field goal is just as good

Shoutout to our 6 million dollar man getting his first line break of the season in only round 20.

Only 1 penalty conceded too.

Interesting that we're celebrating these performances from our marquee player and captain lol.

Saved a certain try game over. He does the effort plays that are needed to compete. If you can't see it you don't want to. He is on ridiculous money and with that comes the critics.
