OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

Only if you actually believe Luai was going to agree to remove clauses for no reason whatsoever without anything in return.

The reason he would remove them is that his contract would have been topped up.

They could do that from 2028 when the new tv rights come into effect. Allowing us to have a competitive team and retaining players until then like Bula etc.

But hey, what do I know ..

Whilst i too am not overly concerned with Luai getting paid a bag of money elsewhere in 2028, you could look at this the other way. He has to make a call in the next few days about staying on at the Tigers, the only real alternative where he could get extra $$ that would be attractive enough to make the move is PNG. The guy has to do his due dilligence. I could be wrong, however i recall reading that his option this year is for the remainder of his contract.

Going over their could also be a negotiation tactic but let me ask everyone on here a question.

How much more would you need to get paid in your job to move to Port Moreseby?

Per chatgpt: a “$1.2M player” in the NRL is realistically living on around $650k net per season, before lifestyle costs and investments. For the same salary, he would basically be earning double the money.

So they were going to upgrade our highest paid player who is already on massive overs onto even bigger overs without actually knowing what the new salary cap will be. That seems a worse outcome than what we have now.
Meanwhile Luai's camp was going to agree to this despite knowing that they are already well positioned to renegotiate when the cap does rise and to take advantage of opportunities such as PNG.
Richo may have been trying to negotiate an upgrade/clause removal (though even this I doubt since he agreed to them in the first place). I don't see any reason why Luai's management would agree to it.

PNG are the Silvertails ?
Yep, (the analogy could be off) but they effectively have double the salary cap and are desperate for players. Their easiest strategy IMO is to target a happy playing group of close knit players to get a core of a team. We are ripe for the picking.

The extra 2 teams were always going to cause problems for us. We need to start locking down players.

I’m sure they are trying to re- sign them .. but the players might want to test this hot market November 1 …won’t just be a problem for us

You ever lived that life bro? It’s punishing. The flights 2 hrs but it’s really6 hr sod your life gone … every single weekend . And what happens during the seasons where every second game is a home game . He doesn’t see his family . What if it’s 2 home games then a game in Sydney then another in nz . He doesn’t see his family for weeks on end . That’s not sustainable mate .

To work 4 years to setup your kids ??

A friend worked in the mines 6 weeks on two weeks off with a young family he could do it

Living in a in 5 start compound breakfast lunch and dinner at the buffet

Family flying in and out every few weeks your flying to see them every few weeks
It's not the end of the world

The biggest problem for me would be boredom what to do after a year you can not leave the compound at all no going for a walk basically living at work with day release could you ever switch off ?

Benji’s selling a different message. I.e. we’ve achieved nothing, one week at a time.

That’s why you need a GM type guy looking big picture.

If it was me playing …I would wait and see what is gunna happen with the broadcast deal ( might double..) , and then maybe even go to this hot market with 2 new teams before extending … Im sure most players are the same .,what’s the hurry ? I’m under contract another 18 months still

Agree and there are probably lots of clubs with a group of key players coming off contract at similar times. (I don’t follow other teams rosters and contracts that closely).

It’s just that it’s our ring leader that has flown to png…

Yeah that’s what the manager is telling the player.

The operators like Richo are masters at selling the opportunity cost.

Major injuries, long term security, a club on the rise.

Hopefully someone in our organisation is onto it.

Richo is gone unfortunately .. there aren’t many like him waiting around for another club to pick them up
