OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

They followed him here ..PNG is a different story …it’s not for everybody regardless of money ..

Watching Terrell May’s pod every week … I can’t see him living over there in a resort/ compound
The money is just one part of a major lifestyle decision. Most people just don’t fully comprehend how tough it is over there. I travelled to PNG regularly for 25 years and believe me. I met all sorts of expats, mercenaries and others and saw first hand what living there can do to you and your family.
Despite the fact that he’d be adored up there, it’s a huge decision and one that requires very careful consideration.

I know a couple of people too that have lived over there .. guys with families… it’s not for everyone but it can work for some …

I think JL would do it standing on his ear .. not sure about his missus and kids ..

Really depends on how much money he wants at the end of the day … a lot to stay here or more over there

The NRL needs players to take an interest in PNG and they will be doing everything they can to encourage players like Jarome to sign on. They give money to clubs to foster the competition and players support money being available to them in the game.
A fans perspective is all about loyalty - players can change a jersey in the blink of an eye if it means furthering their career. We view these things very differently to players and the the people that are funding and promoting the game. As long as a player gives his all on the field when he wears your colours that is about all you can expect these days.
Hence the importance of having people at your club who can sell it, manage the cap and make sure they retain the players that give coaches the resources they need to compete..

If the likes of Bula and Luai are tempted by tax free dollars to join the Chiefs I can understand it. On the other hand if they signed with the Dogs or another already established franchise I would be dirty. Of course the bottom line with the contract they have with us, they are entitled to go where they like for what ever reason

Hopefully if we can taste a few years of continuous success we will not have to put clauses in our contracts that are heavily favoured in the player

Like the talking heads say im more concerned if he does go about others bailing on us. Turuva, Mays, Fainus. Im hopeful they respect Benji more than Luai so wont bail on us but im not 100% others wont follow.
Luai respects Benji 100% and going for a look is fine , club knows what he is doing , maybe the club and him have decided 27 can be his last year with us , suites everyone , we just don’t know , maybe he come back and says I’m hear for the complete contract at Wests Tigers only time will tell

Im not 100% stressed if he goes. Just concerned with anyone following him.

It can't all rest on Benji's shoulders - retaining these players will fall back on effective management at club/ administration level.

Thats pretty much my perspective. My own experience with family in the top end; I could have stayed longer easily, but when enough was enough for the family, it was time to go, and we had freedom of movement. It will be tough for a family living there in a compound full stop, regardless of the money.

I agree about others going too, the problem is Benji has always been family first (a good thing) but it may be about to bite him in the arse. Players can go there and effectively double their salaries. There's a lot of people who make sacrifices for a few years in order to make sure their families are set up.

The bigger issue for me is why have we been left in such a vulnerable position again. Not with Luai, but with others coming off contract? Why do we still have an Interim CEO and why is there still not a GM of football? All questions for another thread I guess, but it feels like someone is asleep at the wheel.

Luai likes watching cartoons & opening Pokemon cards.

I think he's earned himself a very comfortable life and has got used to it.

I can only speculate - the longer he is an “interim” the more things that need to be approved by the board … control seems important ..

In hindsight .. they have ended up with a lot of players all off contract next year .. it’s not particularly good timing with the two new clubs .. I assume the player managers engineered that .. I know Richo tried to get Taylan May to sign for 3 years but he would only cop 2..

Just got to hope at the end of the day … most players want to remain here and continue playing under BM… they seem happy enough on and off the field .. it seems a lot different compared to the likes of Galvin. Tedesco. Woods, Mitch Moses, Isaiah Papili, Stefano and others who weren’t happy and we all knew it

He likes the dollar too … he has great opportunities in the future with media and marketing… but wants more it seems

Spent 10 years in the top end and could not agree more. Looked at working in PNG in the early 80’s and on advice from expats who had worked there or working there decided to work in an indigenous community instead. It was safer

Yep this is my concern - Terrell made it clear that his contract negotiations stalled when the board blew up.
The Lualli's have gone to Perth together - if you are worried about being isolated in a new country having your brother with you is an attractive proposition. Chammas will be all over it. We need to sort this stuff out if we haven't already - and Id love to know who is currently upgrading/ negotiating with players/ managers because when Richardson was with us I knew that was his expertise.
