OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

I think it’s a pretty low risk anything happens …but yeah it’s not zero…

I said when this was first proposed … it’s pretty unprecedented in World sport that I can think of …it would be like the NFL putting a team permanently based in Mexico City ..
Idk if I’d say it’s low risk when there’s talk of them having to live in gated communities and will require constant security. Not something any player has had to contend with before.

The contract is not the problem it's the fact that he is being used as a possible recruiter for a cashed up club looking to put together a competitive team. This is not one quality player moving on to an established club fulfilling his contract - he is being encouraged to bring blokes with him while we pay him 1,2 for the privilege.
Some may not see that as a problem but it doesn't sit well with me.
As Benji said clubs got til Nov 1 to pull their finger out and re-sign who we want to keep
Players have a mind of their own, and PNG were always gunna be there regardless if Luai signed on or not
I know being mates with our players isnt helpful but its what it is

& PNG to match them. We would have to pay more for the player to have equal take home.
Yes under those rules currently being allowed by the NRL, there is nothing we can do about it.
All we can do is make very good long term offers to all the players we ideally want to keep with us long term.
Not everyone will be interested in playing and living in PNG no matter how good the money is.

Sometimes the cricket team have had to deal with security concerns going to places like Pakistan. But that’s just a tour. These guys are going to live in these conditions.

What the hell has Luai going to PNG got to do wth HBG - it was the saviour Richardson who set up the contract.
Can you both pipe down with this bullshit . It’s nonsense . For the next 10 years if you’ve got an older guys coming off contract or a Ryan Matterson type , they’re going to be looking at PNG.
I know people are worried , but I already have a feeling they will have half the 2020 origin series players . But it will be 2028 by then , so there’s a real case to be made it could be a dads army type situation . And in fact it probably will be as they’re the best guys to bring along the local indigenous boys and teach them about professionalism , and what an nrl player looks like. .

I think the risk is a little overstated by most …there are probably a couple of thousand Aussie expats living there now…do we hear about them being murdered or kidnapped very often ? The place has a very negative perception no doubt …. The constant security is more about prevention by the Aust Govt …this whole thing is essentially on them

I would imagine single guys may be reluctant & young guys who are close to family.

Older players with families with kids aged 1 to 3 would be prime target (as they can return before schooling).

Peops still thinking HBG had no involvement lol.

Richo negotiating clauses out in November last year.

Gets punted.

Club is a full on basket case for the whole off season.

Player agents concerned and other clubs telling players and agents the tigers are a basket case.

Richo goes
Jarome goes
Bula, May ?

How many players will it take before people realize HBG are a cancer to this club?

Richo is the most capped CEO in the game. Taken 3 teams from the bottom to premierships and another from bankruptcy to a prelim.

How many have done that? Zero.

What have HBG done? Run this club into the ground since Balmain went into administration.
Take a Bex and have a lie down. It's all become too much for you.

Marshall communicates well with the media which is a huge positive for WTs. The manner in which WTs dealt with this difficult issue has been admirable. Players throughout the NRL will imo warm to Marshall and his capacity to communicate positively with them.

He has improved a lot … still comes across as a little abrupt and confrontational.. it’s a tough gig though dealing with those pricks

Yep. I do not doubt that, if the board had been left alone, they (or Richo) would have had the skills to see this coming and implement a strategy.

We're unfortunately going to struggle again with these decisions. Let's hope we have enough momentum from Richo now to override the current lack of planning & vision

At least all the Jarome haters on here got one thing right.

He couldn't get another club to pay him what we're paying him...........he got a sh1t tonne more.😀

With his contract and TPA's plus whatever his good friends in the PNG government throw his way he'll be able to live the life of a Luai for the rest of his days.

Tbf, it took a club with an extra 40-50% in their salary cap compared to the rest of the comp.

The security threat is real in PNG. I've been confronted by rascals; it is unpleasant and dangerous. The Black Cat track incident is an example of what can go wrong, but also of the overwhelming kindness of the PNG people.

Club feels at a bit of a crossroads yet again. Things are going well as of now but if they can't lock down Bula, Mays and Fainus we start from scratch.

I am confident they will. Time for the CEO to earn his keep. Wouldny a Friday bulk extension announcement be just what the Dr ordered?

Mate ..I’ve been confronted by people on the streets of Sydney …

I’m not saying the risk is non existent over there ..just overstated …once again… there are thousands over there now

Worse case scenario is we might lose a couple of more players we wanted to keep to the PNG team.
Benji is not stupid, he has total control of our recruitment and retention and I’m sure he will be speaking with all our key players who are off contract at the end of 2027 to ask if they are thinking of leaving g for PNG or elsewhere and get an idea of how much it will cost to keep them with us.
As an example there are plenty of quality backs with PNG heritage, so I don’t think players such as Taylan May will be high on their target list and if they don’t want him it could and hopefully will mean that Terrell May is not interested.
I reckon Chammas, Willie Peters and Jerome would love to have all 3 Fainu brothers, but you would hope Jerome does the honourable thing and realises how important they are to our Wests Tigers future.
Turuva and Pole are the only others they will possibly be looking at and we will need to make them both very good offers to hopefully stay with us.
