OFFICIAL Jeral Skelton #294

Unless Val Holmes decides he wants to be a Tiger, there are a few more unheralded guys that could fit into the backline, or at worst, offer strong competition.

I've mention Isiah Tass & he would be a great addition.

Hayze Perham would be an underrated option that can cover fullback, wing, centre & 5/8.

Tesi Niu is a pocket rocket that can cover centre & wing for flexibilty.

I'm sure I'm about to hear how terrible Niu & Perham are, but if they are good budget depth options capable of putting pressure on the likes of Staines, Doueihi & Olam for starting spots- they are good additions.

Tass would be an instant starter- but any of the 3 are good imo.

Looking at our backline next year it’s looking very good for present and future purposes. This is a hypothetical I’ve conjured up before and for it to work it all would have to go smoothly but it looks like this:

2025:
1) Jahream Bula
2)Charlie Staines
3)Sunia Turuva
4)Justin Olam
5)Jeral Skelton

This is a good backline and if most stay injury free and play to potential then it’s a top 8 backline. When it gets interesting is in 2026 the final year of Justin Olam and Jeral Skelton

2026:
1)Jahream Bula
2)Luke Laulilii
3)Sunia Turuva
4)Justin Olam
5)Jeral Skelton

This year is what I believe the club has been working towards cause the retirement of Olam perfectly coincides with the readiness of Heamasi Makasini (if he is retained) who will be roughly 20 by that time. Another play who would be ready would be flyer Navren Willet.

2027:
1)Jahream Bula
2)Luke Lualilii
3)Sunia Turuva
4)Heamasi Makasini
5) Navren Willet

Again I’m obviously working in what ifs but this could genuinely be the approach the club is taking as they would have all of this mapped out and to a plan. As for present tense there is no doubt it helps us tremendously can’t wait to see how it goes.

He hasn't yet, negotiations started around may-ish and then have gone radio silent. We'd have a decent chance if we can chuck our hat in the ring I reckon. We look to have more future than the Sharks too
Only 'reservation' in signing younger talents is that we will have a few young players wanting to move into 1st grade consideration in a year or two- Luke Lualili'i, Willett, Makasini etc. It's a balance at the moment- you don't want to sign guys that put roadblocks in front of the ones you want to develop.

I actually didn’t know that! Kayal Iro deadset looks exactly like Val Holmes, incredible player as well!

He’s so consistent as well. His stats over the weekend, 18 runs 171 metres that’s elite for a centre! Plus 6 tackle breaks, 1 TA, 3 offloads, 1 linebreak and 28 tackles if you don’t mind. Bloke plays like a forward in the centres
