A lot of talk post Vegas 2024 and the debriefing is sure to centre around the scheduling for next year.
I think 4 games on one day is too many for audiences that are just learning the game. Even I as a rusted on supporter of the code got a bit tired with it all. If you watched all 4 live you were in the stadium for 10 hours. Thats too long. Look at how we run Magic Round. Double header Friday night, Triple headers on Saturday and Sunday. The triple headers are about a 7 hour investment if you go to the stadium and watch them all. Thats around the same time investment as a day at a Cricket Test Match. 10 hours is a slog. The piss breaks alone would be tiring - let alone the cost of food and refreshments.
If the NRL cant afford to stage two double headers, they may have to consider dropping one of these games. The super league game was entertaining. The quality is not NRL standard, but it also brought 10K + screaming, singing Pommies to the ground and city. I think it has to remain a fixture.
The 2 x NRL games are the showpieces. They contain world renowned players in League circles that people will pay to watch. Having just 1 NRL game would dillute the experience for Aussie expats and travellers.
Therefore the game to get the chop must be the one which drove the least amount of interest and produced the lowest quality spectacle. The Aussie women are far too good for their opposition. They wanted to show the world what they could do but in the end what they produced was something akin to a world champion fighter taking on a kid with Cerebral Palsy. If anything, the crowd seemed to dislike them. The ladies failed to promote the womens game and likely drove a bit of interest away from Rugby League in general. The crowd for the Penrith/Cronulla game was nowhere near what it was earlier in the day. That massive flogging bored people and they left the ground. Ironically, the game with the diminishing crowd was the best game and was a proper contest. It showcased a lot of positive aspects that we wish to sell to foreign markets.
I think a triple header...NRL - Super League - NRL...is the way to go moving forward. Surprisingly though, Ive seen plenty of commentary suggesting that an NRL game should be dropped. It would be interesting to see the breakdown of television ratings per time slot during the day both in America and at home.
