Not his team won't fly in 21...

Reynolds leaving is good for the salary cap but him leaving after pre-season training started is hardly ideal.
Aloiai leaving so quickly would not have been in the plan and is not ideal.
Seyfarth leaving sounds like it wasn't ideal.
The JAC deal falling through at the last minute was not ideal.
Most other teams would know who will play 1, 6, 7 & 9 for the year, we have had lots of changes and will need time for some trial and error.

If Madge had known how much salary cap he was going to have for 2021 he would probably made some different decisions, it looked like he was being very conservative with player purchases for 2021 so we he would have cap space and money for 2022.

So our position is better than anyone would have expected, but there is still plenty of justification for not making the 8 in 2021.

Call them excuses and demand Madge's sacking if you like. I feel very strongly that sacking Madge at the end of 20201 would make us much worse in 2022 and 2023 compared with sticking with him.

JAC didn't fall through at the last minute, Aloiai was playing games with the club for a little bit of time and Reynolds wasn't in the clubs plans. Pre season training doesn't get serious until after Christmas.

We might not make the 8 but if things we have done over this off season pay off then we are looking good for a top 8 finish, if not we still have more money to play with for 22.

I think the Tiger's were quite confident JAC was coming when he signed the Heads of Agreement.

I was saying that the way things happened made it much harder to plan ahead, if they knew they had the money Reynolds, Aloiai, and McIntyre earlier, they may have been able to chase higher quality players. This not a unique problem, it happens at every club.

It is the same as saying Madge bought in players last year so they were his choice. He did not have a healthy salary cap to buy those players, he would have made different choices if he had less money locked up in under performing players that were not his choice. The choices were compromised by the salary cap situation.

They would have known for quite sometime that JAC's interest was elsewhere. I would rather how our off season has played out than if we had of signed JAC, we are in a better position now than we would have been if he signed.

Aloiai is a dog and it took us a week to find a better player, plus we got a healthy payout from Manly for letting him go. If we get Laurie early this is probably our best offseason since leading into 2004. We are heading in the right direction and I expect to see improvements on the field in 2021.

If @Geo had made that statement I would have agreed with him and not bothered posting. I have included the original post below that I disagreed with and thought was worth replying to.

I am actually happy for him as his enthusiasm will be a massive plus for a club in the UK.He was not a success for us but that should change in a lesser competition like the ESL where he would be playing first grade each week which is very unlikely here

How many of them actually signed from outside tigers? Sometimes you re-sign guys because there’s no better options like Seyfarth. Obviously he should get them performing but I still don’t think we will make the 8 next season.

Doubt Reynolds money is used for much good anyway considering how little options there are on the player market at the moment

Still have to have time to replace that player... otherwise, it is wasted cap, and it the same as having Reynolds

There’s very little on the market too. It won’t make a difference to our 2021 campaign at all most likely. Still an average roster overall.

How many signed outside the Wests Tigers?

Douiehi, Kapaoa, Leilua x2, Ofahengaue, Tamou, Musgrove, Simpkin, Roberts, Utoikamanu, Blore, Walters...about half

Less than half, and a couple of them rookies. Still a roster hamstrung by issues of the past. Obviously Madge needs to work with what he’s got but 2022 is still the big year where he will have a lot more choice in the squad. It’ll be interesting to see how the squad goes next season, they could kill it or they could flop imo

Nope. This is his team now.

Definitely more so than last year, but not completely imo. Still no excuse not to get them going though, work with what you’ve got. Like I said if we play our best every week, we will make the 8.

How many coaches have completely their team? Stuff all. I like the team he’s put together but it’s on him now. No more excuses.

Your still looking at
Packer $700'000
Mbye $800'000 ?
Reynolds $700'000
Thats a total of $2'200'000 cap money tied up which is not Madges doing
Almost a quarter of our cap
Its not Madges team till he rids us of these players and this burden on our cap
(Sure we can keep Mbye but certainly not on the $ he is on)
Then and only then can he be held accountable for our teams performance
Even then if we are subsidising players like Reynolds it may restrict us on who we can sign
Also the very best players that Madge may wish to sign may not be off contract when we have the money to spend
Much of these signing descisions come down to timing
At the end of the day I would like to see Madge here to complete his team rebuild for another 3 years
2 to complete his team and 1 to prove without a doubt as to what he can do with the team
I have been impressed with who things are going at our club
I think we can all see how things are working out and there is definitely reason to be optimistic about our chances over the next few years
Well done to the entire board at The West Tigers
But the job is not complete yet

Finally
I would love Madge to stay if we can from this day forward continue to climb the ladder to a premiership
Slip down the ladder and the pressure will certainly be on him to keep his job
But IMOP he is safe for another 2 to 3 years at this stage
Till the team is truly his

Nah he has as much his team now as most other coaches. If we cop a hiding this year and do nothing it’s on him. This roster is good enough to do something.

Have to disagree, we have done the best we can in limited circumstances but our side still doesn’t stack up with the good sides on paper for the reasons outlined. I believe Madge will need 3 years to get this side competing consistently.

Disagree, I think our lineup is substantially better than 2019 when we came 9th. No more excuses, time to start winning.

I don't think top 8 is an iron clad requirement next year, but it is definitely a possibility if things fall our way.

So.. . 9th is acceptable again?

We have 3 roster spots to fill now with Reynolds going I think. Depending on who those signings are could be enough to propel us into the top 8 in 2021.

Strange Hull have announced prior to us releasing him.

Hull FC are delighted to announce the signing of former State of Origin half-back Josh Reynolds from Wests Tigers!

The Black & Whites have swooped to capture the 31-year old, fighting off significant competition to secure his signature to see him head to the KCOM Stadium in 2021, agreeing an initial two-year deal with an option of a third year.

Another major coup from the NRL for the Betfred Super League, Reynolds heads to the UK with over 160 games of NRL experience under his belt, in a 10 year career that has seen him represent both Canterbury Bulldogs and his current side, Wests, following new head coach Brett Hodgson from the Tigers to the Airlie Birds.

A New South Wales representative and a key player in the side that helped the Blues to their first series victory in eight years against Queensland in 2014, Reynolds brings a tenacious, high-energy style of play over to the UK to add another dimension to FC’s attack next season.

The experienced Australian began his professional career back in 2011 with the Bulldogs having come through the ranks and represented Canterbury’s sides at U16, U20 and reserved grade sides, gaining plenty of honours including winning the New South Wales Cup Grand Final in 2010, and being voted the player of the season in the league.

His competitive debut soon followed and within a season, Reynolds quickly became a mainstay in Des Hasler’s side, forming a formidable half-back partnership with fellow Blues star Trent Hodgkinson, that would see the side claim the Minor Premiership in only his second season, and reach the 2012 and 2014 NRL Grand Finals.

A true fans favourite of the Bulldogs and considered to be a real ‘clubman’ regardless of the shirt he is wearing, Reynolds remained a regular starter until his departure from Belmore in 2017, having scored 41 tries in 138 appearances; a move to Wests followed where he would partner the likes of both Luke Brooks and Benji Marshall throughout the course of the 2018 to 2020 campaigns.

However, a new challenge awaits the Sydney born star in 2021, who can’t wait to get going with his new side.

Speaking to hullfc.com, Reynolds said: “I’m really excited and proud to be joining a club like Hull FC, they’re a big club with great heritage and a very passionate set of fans.

“I’ve heard a lot about the club and their vision which is exciting and I’d love to get over to the UK and try and win a trophy with them.

“They’ve won the cup a couple of times recently which looked like great occasions to be part of and so do the Derby games.

“The stadium looks class. I can’t wait to run out there for the club and start the next chapter in my career, I’m really ready to rip in and get started. I’m excited about what the next few years has in store.”

Hull FC head coach Brett Hodgson commented: “Josh is an elite player. He builds his game around work-ethic and effort, and that’s what we are after here at the club – he’ll be a real leader for us.

“He’s played Origin, Grand Finals, and Prime Ministers XIII matches – he’s been involved in the game for a long time – he has played at the highest level and he will bring that experience with him.

“He is the sort of player who will bring out the best in the other players around him – the opportunity to see him work together on the field with Marc Sneyd is really exciting. They can complement each other really well with their two different skill-sets; he is a runner of the ball and will find opportunities to attack out of nothing.

“Josh is a passionate guy, and when he sets his sights on what he wants to achieve, he will excel. To have him in Black & White is a really exciting prospect for the club.”

An Eels' supporter on their forum is attempting to draw an equivalence between Reynolds departing and the respective departures of Matterson, Moses and Aloiai. I just raised it because I didn't know some Eels' supporters were so put out by it.

Huge cap relief though.

Doubt Reynolds money is used for much good anyway considering how little options there are on the player market at the moment

With Reynolds gone it removes another excuse for non performance in 2021....

28 of the eventual 30 will All have been recruited re-signed/extended by the current recruitment team..

Most of the top 8 teams....the continually successful teams.

Cleary been at Pen 2 seasons, O’Brien at New 1 season, Bennett at South’s 2 seasons and Morris has been badly hurt by cap issues, amongst other things (see Xerri).

I should've just said the roosters, storm, raiders and Parramatta.

Why do people talk about sacking Madge? He knew we had a crap roster and it would take time. Its only recently that he has got decent recruitment, develoment, and training staff that are as professional as the top clubs. We finished ahead of a lot of highly fancied sides with 1.5mil of players hardly taking the field.Common sense ,not emotion is needed.

Who said sack him? I can’t recall seeing that. But it’s more his team now than many other coaches have and we need to be making the finals in 2021.
