Keeping faith in Mick Potter

Win or lose Mick keeps a straight face and always supports his players, even when they cop a bagging off us. Then you have your so called people popping up on this forum saying that they have the inside mail that Potter has lost the battle in the change sheds and that he can't coach.
Through all of this Mick has kept his cool and survived. LOYALTY. To all the back stabbers, you do realise his first season was a complete mess given to him on a plate, no knife or fork. He hasn't spent millions because we don't have it. Here's news, a replacement coach will only have the resources, but you will find it hard to find a coach of Potters class and nerve to belong in a set up like ours. So to the experts I have one question. Who are the players playing for now?

Seems a real people person and its so good to see the closeness of the team. Must be his influence installing this belief.

Was quietly confident this year with a balanced squad and remember when he said in the off season that from his experience the way they wrre travelling they were to have a good year and so it seems.

His influence on Teddys positional play is really there for anyone who ever saw Potter play.

For a team that couldn't score last year, we are now averaging 30.3 a game. Also I noticed last night Farah gave the play making reins to Brooks, they both looked outstanding, Farah must read the comments coming from the forum. Can't get overly excited yet, but it's looking really promising for the future. And to think we still have Lawrence, Siro and Halatau to come back from injury and Moses will get his chance soon too.
One bloke that would thrive in this current environment would be BMM, give him a go Mick.

Don't worry about the fans bagging Potter. As master coach Jack Gibson once said, "If you start listening to the fans, you'll soon be sitting with them."
 
Im really pleased for him. Last year was a huge backlash but it was so beneficial for him IF HE SURVIVED. He did by the skin of his teeth, some of the flak was very unfair.

What he went through last year was invaluable. It was adversity plus and he maintained his dignity and his resolve. He also got the benefit of getting 15-20 games into these young stars that are now starting to belong.

Most pleasing for me is the fact that he is fundamentally changing the Tigers mentality. For a decade our mentality has been to beat teams with finesse and skills. Now we are playing real football. We are being aggressive, and dominating the middle of the field.

Things looks so bright, if we can retain all our players. Big IF!!
 
I have been a big critic but I am starting to turn. Will reserve my judgment until Round 10\. Two wins doesn't make a season.

I have always liked the bloke. He was always one of my favourite non-tigers players in the 80's and 90's. So will be happy for my earlier calls to be proven wrong.
 
If we look back at the posts I feel we were very PRO Potter and understood the hand he was dealt when he took over. When the media were calling for his head we the fans supported him and spoke about the Wests Tigers being bigger than any one player or group of players, who supposedly were not feeling his love. The only thing I remember Potter needing to address was his communication skills. I am pretty sure Mayer and Potter both spoke publicly about this.
Only time will tell if Potter is successful, but there are signs that the group is coming together and it seems players are more willing to put there bodies on the line for each other.
It wont be smooth sailing but if we have a tight ship who knows what we can accomplish in the short term with the skills set we have in this great club.

As usual, most of the negative chatter about club, coach and players is started by the media. Weststigers fans have a right to be upset and disheartened when our teams aren't playing well, but we don't really know what is happening in the background.
Coach Potter was a very football smart and tough player in his playing career. Also a great captain/leader.
Although this is his first NRL coaching position, he has been very successful in his o/seas/superleague coaching stints. I think that he is very capable of delivering the goods.
Early days, but the team seem to be able to hold the line and make forward progress. Players like Anasta and Blair, who continually cop a bagging in the media, are actually showing some reasonably good form behind this spirited pack. Hopefully, our injuries are few and short in duration. I believe we have the beginning of a great future!
 
There is no doubt Potter is the boss this year…. the best thing he did was get rid of his assistants from last year.

His a lot more relaxed and with Brooks there now the team can play his way.
If you don't put in at training Potter doesn't want you. I doubt a certain back rower will be in the team at all this year.

Yeah Potts is OK...I have always said that :laughing:

i've been on the sideline in regards to potter.
was waiting for rd 4 to be over to look at where we are as a team.

the one thing that stopped me from throwing him under the bus was his time in england and what he did with his team that had nothing to play for.
i've found it hard to understand comments by people on here who have said he can't motivate his team.
he was obviously doing something right over there and find it hard to believe it was just a fluke.

so i watched while we started last year like crap,he kept picking the same under performers and then as the injuries came we finally saw the young talent coming through.
on top of that we saw him decide that the benji era was over at wests tigers.
it really should not have been a surprise to anyone this was coming.
when i heard him comment before last season that we had to earn the right to spread the ball i knew something would have to give,and at times it felt like he was trying to put square pegs in round holes.

what was hard to gauge on him was player development,he said when he took the job was that he could improve players individually.but as the season wore on the experienced players looked no better and some worse than ever.

now with a new squad he seems to be getting results,but even more so is a new mind set out on the field.
the bar has been raised and we have seen a new standard by the tigers that has a mental toughness i haven't seen from a tigers side in a while.

so far his new assistants seem to be meshing well with the playing group that is showing results on the field.
so now when we look at this rebuild we actually look to have a fairly solid foundation to build upon.i;m now close to expecting to win instead of hoping we are competitive.

right now i like where we are heading with potter and i love the style of play over the last 2 weeks .
if he can keep the players in this mind set for most of the season i see no reason why he would not be given an extension, especially when he was given little room with the salary cap to make aggressive plays on the player market.
long way to go this season,but the signs are there that he was/is the right man for the job.

I don't know who said this but geez you can hear some stupid stuff. Its Potters job to coach the team. He should get along in a professional manner with the players but he doesn't have to go out and have beers with them.
 
When you look at who Mick Potter was coached by in his NRL career as a player you get a better understanding of the man

I guess he saw their strengths and weaknesses as coaches and is trying to meld the best of these guys into what he wants with his own mix

But it is obvious that whatever he's doing this season is working

Whether Souths and the Titans played badly own their own or played badly because they were forced to play that way by our efforts is the big question

The big thing we have in our favour after next weekend is until Round 11 we don't leave Sydney to play a game

This can't be a bad thing

i thought it was pretty clear we attacked them both games offensively and defensively.
it was the defensive pressure that caught both teams off guard mentally on game day.

sure does make rd 1 a wtf moment.

from the outside looking in,they look like a team that has bought into the coaches system.
 
Wests Tigers are now playing as a team. That makes a difference and somebody got us there.
The players are clearly having fun, smiling and congratulating and supporting each others efforts. Somebody got us there.
Watch Robbie in the pressers. The evil little grin that appears on his face. His body language tells me that he supports Potter.

The club should now be starting to think about a 3 yr extension to potters contract, i know making the 8 is the yard stick for this seasons sucess, but imo even if we don't i'v seen enough of potter and the way he goes about his business to know we have a coach who can help build a dynasty at the tigers, from the way he handled last year to the way the lad's have developed under him and the no compromise attitude. Imo it's time for the club to start thinking contract extension.
