BALMAIN great Steve Roach has implored the Wests Tigers not to sack Kyle Lovett over his drug possession charge and to sign a front-row partner for captain Aaron Woods after “carrying that pack for five years’’.
As the Tigers battle to hold on to Woods, James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks beyond next season, Roach said another top priority was finding Woods an experienced book end to lead the club.
“I feel for Aaron Woods, I always have. I’d say he’s a mate of mine, and he’s had to carry that pack for five years,’’ Roach told The Daily Telegraph.
“My way of thinking is when a guy like Sam Moa came off contract (last year), I would have chased him to help Woodsy and the pack.
“I’ve been outspoken plenty of times about the Tigers. That doesn’t mean I don’t follow the Tigers. Of course I follow them. But I’m entitled to my opinion.
“I want to see Woodsy stay. You don’t see many one-club players these days.
“I’d also like to see the Tigers go out on to the marketplace and find somebody to help him.’’
Woods played with the likes of Todd Payten, Gareth Ellis and Keith Galloway, but shouldered most of the work up in recent years.
In the meantime, the Tigers face the more pressing concern of what to do with Lovett.
The local Tigers junior will front Downing Centre Local Court next Wednesday over a drugs possession charge after he was allegedly found with cocaine in the early hours of December 23.
Roach said Lovett was probably ‘’too scared’’ to raise the issue with Tigers officials who had already made it clear he was free to find another club.
‘’I know Kyle personally, he’s a wonderful kid, he’s had a hard up-bringing, he’s an idiot for what he has done, and I’d tell him that to his face,’’ Roach said.
“It’s not an excuse.
“But everyone deserves ne strike. I know the Tigers have been trying to shovel him along but if it was me, I’d give him another chance.’’
The Tigers need to shed money to be salary cap compliant before the start of the NRL season. Lovett would free up around $200,000, even though that figure is much more than what the Tigers must save.
The NRL are unlikely to stand in the way of the Tigers should they decide to sack Lovett if convicted. They will need to liaise with the NRL integrity unit before an outcome could be reached.
Corey Norman pleaded guilty to drugs possession and received an eight-week suspension, but Parramatta wanted to keep their playmaker.
“If he’s a mug, fair enough, you’re gone, but if he’s a decent bloke who has made one mistake, give him one chance,’’ Roach said.
