Lame Membership Numbers - Whats the fix?

This year the Wests Tigers have made moves to further alienate their supporter base who doesn't live in Sydney.

I make 1 maybe 2 trips to Sydney every year for footy, and as I work around the corner from AAMI Park, I attend quite a few games there.

My options are to buy a membership with 0 tickets that costs $50 for a pathetic pack containing a sticker, a lanyard, a keyring and a ticket wallet.

I then have to pay $25 for any tickets I want to attend games. If I went to one home game and one game at AAMI, that'd be $100

which is $1 more than the Claws package (4 home games at ANZ), which also has more trinkets in the pack.

Why is it so damn hard for this club to do a simple out of towners package that allows non-Sydney residents the option to 1 home game and 1 away game?

Nearly every other club has these offers. Why is it so hard for this damn club to do it?

Last year the out of towners package provided 4 tickets to one home game for over $100\. What sort of dopey concept is that?!

So now they want me to fork out $100 to travel to Sydney 4 times, not realising I have to pay extra to fly there 4 times and extra again for accommodation there 4 times. That membership is more like $1000 if I'm frugal for an out of towner.

Unless the club wants to pay for my flights and accommodation, I might consider it, but given that won't ever happen, they can shove their membership up their backsides until they start using a modicum of common sense for a [automatically edited] change!!

i dont subscribe to this way of thinking at all. you seem to epitomise the aforementioned "whats in it for me?" attitude on this matter.

all you seem to be doing is estimating what you think the cap, etc.'s retail worth is and complaining that it doesn't equal the complete price of your membership!

some of it has to go to the club you know!

(as i have said, i actually love the cap - especially as it has the word "member" on it, meaning not just any blow in can get one!)

Good post Madunit …. I think the Club should do better for you. Just because you live along way away shouldn't mean you are restricted to the same old lanyard, key ring and sticker every year for your $50\. I think that's a paltry offering bordering on insult. Why don't you write to Mayer and see if he responds to your concern. He probably won't but at least you will have told him what you think.

And furthermore, if the memberships aren't intended to be looked at from the perspective of "whats in it for me" why do they bother including trinkets in the first place? Why not just straight up ask for donations?

I'll tell you why, because next to no-one would give them any money.

So they have to throw in some trinkets to make you feel as though you benefit from the transaction as well.

My concern is that given the extra expense I incur compared to people like yourself who live in Sydney, just to get to the game and pay for accommodation etc from another state means that the membership for me will always work out being way more expensive, with only about 10% of that money going to the club. Yet the club does not take this into consideration, either that or it just doesn't care.

the reason for these trinkets are because they are cheap, it gives you at least something, and most importantly it advertises the club and allows you to show your support

Was going to wait til the draw came out before I got membership because i work shifts and basically cant do monday night games at all but then decided bugger it i'll just get a family membership and worry about either trying to swap a shift or just chuck a sickie to go to the games. Then i released since my daughters are 13 and 14 this year we don't qualify for a family pass so I'm not going to bother at all.

to the best of my knowledge, the club actually _is_ struggling to make a profit. is it not?

here is the way i see our little dichotomy:

you - i pay $50 for a membership and all i get is cheap paraphernalia.

me - i pay $50 for a membership that makes a small contribution towards benefitting the club i passionately support. in return, they give me a nice little "thank you" in the form of tigers branded things - that i have said i actually do like, and am grateful for.

being a fan of a club is called being a SUPPORTER for good reason, as phyr3 alluded to.

you also outline the issues you have with getting to tigers games. well, i live in perth and one of the things about living here is that the wests tigers are a **sydney** club. geography is an incontrovertible fact...

where you live is your choice: you make it sound as though the wests tigers should create a membership whereby if you need to travel and get accommodation then they should reimburse you as if it were a business trip!

i see your stance on this matter and it is just not the way i think of a membership; I'm sure you do have a lot of peers on this, but that doesn't mean i agree with it.

its your right as a person to think of anything how you want, and as a forum poster you can post what you want. im not gong to criticise you for that.

and you can tell me anything you like...but 'telling me now' or why YOU think 'why' neither makes it true nor more likely i am going to agree with you....

not sure where people get the whole for 50$ i am supporting the club no matter what gifts i get. if i pay someone 50$ i make sure that what im getting back is worth the 50$ everyone has different interpretations to that.

if someone just wants to throw away $50- might as well give it to charity. other people need that money and it means more to them than the club.

If they gave out a Hyundai for every $50 membership people would want a Lexus or a Pajero

Simple answer is this , if you want to spend the $50 go ahead , if not don't

Brand promotion.

But personally a membership for me is all about convenience…..tickets I dont have to worry about later on, I already got them, the extras I dont wear out and about, but I do collect my stuff

what?! so how in any way would being a member benefit the tigers if what you received back was of equal value to what you paid?!! places where that happens are called "shops". and even then they are selling for greater than they paid for the goods.

interpretations aside, i don't think you have much of a grasp on why clubs need members….

if you want to look at it that way, then a club membership basically is a charity. like charity, i believe that becoming a member of a sporting team should have at least SOME selflessness to it!

Why should I have to buy a membership to support my club. I can do that already without spending a cent.

Thats why they throw in trinkets, to give you something for your money.

And given what they are charging for a few cheap trinkets which doesn't grant me any tickets to any games, or any access to the players, all I'm doing is giving the club easy money, of which they do absolutely nothing for me, whereas all you Sydneysiders can go to training sessions and dinners and games etc etc, which makes your membership so much better and worthwhile, and it justifies the expense when you can get closer to the club and the players.

I can't have that experience, without having to take annual leave, pay for flights, pay for accommodation, pay for travel to venue's of team events etc.

And you do pay for convenience which I accept.

But there's no tickets for me that are convenient. So all I'm doing is spending absurdly excess money for 4 cheap trinkets.

Then I have to spend extra for tickets.

Then I have to spend extra to get to the city the game is in.

Then I have to spend extra for accommodation.

The fact that interstate members all have to do this and the club seemingly doesn't realise this is my biggest issue.

As for the smart alec that suggests I'm asking to be reimbursed, grow up. I was making a very clear point that as an interstate member, our expenses don't stop with the membership and any game day expenses.

Furthermore, most NRL clubs have decent interstate membership packages with more trinkets and away game tickets for around $100\. Why can't this club do the same. It can't be hard if other clubs are able to do it.
