Latest Coaching Rumour

Sydney Roosters assistant coach Jason Taylor has emerged as a dark horse to coach the embattled Wests Tigers in 2015.

With Mick Potter headed for the axe in the wake of the Tigers' dismal capitulation in the finals battle, assistant coaches Todd Payten and David Kidwell were the early favourites to take over the reins, with Matt Parish also in the mix.

But I have heard the Tigers are seriously considering Taylor - because of his previous experience at NRL level with the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Parramatta Eels.

I watch Bellamy, Robinson, Maguire, Hassler, Toovey etc and see their passion and intensity - then I watch Potter and I don't see much of anything! I have no idea whether he is a good coach or a bad coach, but to my mind enthusiasm and desire are important ingredients and Potter seems to lack them.
I think that if he goes, then Kidwell and Payten (as much as I liked Toddy as a player) need to go to. There were too many rumours of backstabbing going on for my liking - and anyway I understood that Kidwell was the Defence coach? Don't think that went so well really!

Well you can get lots of emotion and get Stuart or no emotion and get Bennett. I like your selection logic.

Cant see a quick decision being made with so many contenders being bandied around.

They are only being talked about here. How many coaches/people have actually applied for the job?

If they are going to get ride of Potter and Griffin is the only one who has applied then he will be appointed. Simple.

2009\. He was sacked after David Fa'alogo punched him on Mad Monday. Why he felt the need to attend Mad Monday with the players is beyond me.

Can't see it happening until the GM of Football Operations is appointed. The coaching staff will be direct reports so the GM will want input into who the new coach is. The GM's success will be reflected by the coaching success. If the GM is being judged by that then they would want input into who that person is.

Not long out of his own playing days, probably immaturity on his part. I am sure he will not repeat this mistake.

MX quoted one of the new female board members.

Potter gets to front the board this week to plead his case. Mayer will play big part in the decision. (bye Potter I guess) They are putting a lot of thought into it.

Taylor would be a good choice imo. There is a lot of young halves talent that he could mentor.

The bigger question is why did Fa'alogo feel the need to punch him? Bit of a tosser perhaps?

Jason Taylor would be a big mistake. All he ever was at Wests and Norths was a goal kicker. Without that he would have been lucky to hold down a regular first grade spot.

Rubbish. I was never a Taylor fan but, despite being close to the slowest player to ever play first grade, he had a lot of strengths to his game.

Importantly, as far as coaching goes, he had a very good footballing brain and a lovely passing game. I actually think he could do a lot for our halves.

You should also note that mediocre players tend to be better coaches than great players. This probably has something to do with the fact thay great players are great because of instinct.

Trent Robinson played 3 first grade games and has done okay.

That is total BS Knuckles - you obviously didn't watch a lot of games Taylor played in. He was more than just a goalkicker. A very classy and astute football thinking half.

I think he could make a great coach if given the opportunity. He cleaned up Parra after the Brian Smith debacle. He then took Souths to the top 8 for the first time in 17 yrs the following year. He quit NRL after the media beatup in 2009 but since then when he returned to coaching in 2011 took the Roosters NYC team to consecutive top8 finishes before moving to the Roosters asst coach job in 2013 in which they were the premiers,
Pretty good credentials if you ask me.

Even if that were true, what relevance does that have with him being a coach?

Let's ask Mayer
Our new Chair was quoted today as saying the board will "rubber stamp " the current CEO's recommendation. So it is ta ta Mr Potter I would think

All the noise coming out of Concord suggests Potter will be sacked… GO said today out of respect they are allowing Potter to present to the Board.... Well that's almost saying goodbye without saying so...If Potter was a smart man he would resign before he is sacked... Everyone seems to believe that Potter will not get a new contract except Potter himself... He is either ignorant or arrogant or just plain stupid..

And what happens next season when Mr Glass ( Tedesco) and the torn ligament brigade break down again ? Do we end up going through half a dozen coaches in the same amount of years like Parramatta has ??
