Latrell Mitchell's contract saga looks to be anything but over after the Rabbitohs declared their main focus has shifted to getting newly signed Jai Arrow to Redfern this season.

On Monday, Souths announced the signing of Titans forward Arrow on a four-year contract from the 2021 season. But South Sydney general manager of football, Shane Richardson, said any potential talks with star centre Mitchell would need to take a back seat as the club puts their energy into securing Arrow immediately.

Everyone is shouting from the rooftops and I don't quite understand why," Richardson said. "At the end of the day, he is not my priority at the moment."

"We will worry about him once our priority is sorted out, and that's Jai Arrow."

The Titans are holding out on an early release for Arrow and are reportedly warming to the idea of a transfer fee and player swap in return. Richardson said it was a decision "for Gold Coast to make".

After being granted leave of absence from the Roosters when they returned to training on Monday morning, Mitchell was reportedly looking to take his chances on a one-year deal with South Sydney on around $400,000 for 2020.

The initial salary is a far cry from his initial asking price of $1 million a season, but the idea was to secure a longer-term contract at the end of the season if the Rabbitohs can move players on from Redfern.

Richardson said the club's major focus has now turned to securing Arrow as a much-needed replacement for Sam Burgess in 2020.

Jai Arrow was exactly what we wanted recruitment wise," he said."I'm not worried about [Latrell] at the moment . . . once we know what is going on with [Arrow] then we will make a decision based on what money we've got left over and what we can and can't do."

The future of Mitchell at Redfern looks to be even more uncertain when looking at the Souths line-up for 2020.

We've got a plethora of backs, and they're not just backs, they're quality backs.

Shane Richardson
While the signing of Arrow was said to be "critical" to the side's forward pack, Richardson said he is comfortable with his current backline.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson said in November he believed his centre was on the hunt for a club that would play him at fullback.

We've got a plethora of backs, and they're not just backs, they're quality backs," Richardson said.

Since the Roosters withdrew a two-year contract extension for 2021 and 2022 at the end of October, Mitchell has been in talks with Wests Tigers, North Queensland, the Titans and the Rabbitohs over his future.

Despite withdrawing their offer in November, the Tigers say they are still interested in securing Mitchell. And despite signing Valentine Holmes on a multi-million dollar six-year deal, the Cowboys also say they are still "in talks" with Mitchell.

"At the end of the day, he's got to be happy. And he's got to be playing football where he wants to play. Whether that's at Souths or at Wests or wherever it is, I don't know. But all I know is, I don't think it's unfair for him to take his time to make his mind up," Richardson said.

Richardson said the reality of the situation was "far bigger" than just "putting Latrell in a Souths jersey" and that he hadn't even met the Roosters centre yet.

"Once [the Arrow situation] is done, we will just sit down and take our time and think of what we need, so we don't waste the money and make sure we spend the money wisely."

Going off that it sounds like they are happy to sign LM but it was only a few days ago the Mighty Coach said himself there was no interest... Hope they sign him and he is a flop..

Braith Anasta: Why Rabbitohs are ‘perfect fit’ for unwanted Latrell
Abandoned Roosters star Latrell Mitchell’s future is still up in the air.
Abandoned Roosters star Latrell Mitchell’s future is still up in the air.
NRL great Braith Anasta believes South Sydney would be a “perfect fit” for unwanted Roosters star Latrell Mitchell.

The 22-year-old has been linked to South Sydney, Canterbury, Wests Tigers, North Queensland and Gold Coast but Anasta sees a deal with South Sydney a no-brainer given the retirement of Greg Inglis.

"I know that Souths are interested in him, I know they’re trying to table an offer at the moment, they’ve just got to work out the situation with Jai Arrow,” Anasta told Fox Sports News.

“They’re going to make it happen. It’s a perfect fit with Greg Inglis not there anymore. He’s a great player and they need outside backs. It just makes sense.”

The Roosters have attempted to put a stop to what seems to be a never-ending contract saga by granting Mitchell a leave of absence.

It’s a timely decision given Mitchell is set to employ his third agent in eight months, which has led Anasta to call into question Mitchell’s management.

“He will be a great player no matter where he goes but the advice he’s receiving, I couldn’t encourage that as an ex rugby league player and as someone now who is involved in sports management,” Anasta said.

Ha ha, does Laurie Daley have an integrity at all?
A month ago he claimed that Latrell Mitchell and Wests Tigers were a perfect fit - then he went on to claim he had inside information on this and Wests Tigers are where he will end up 😀
Talk about rolling with the punches - you’re a fake Daley

**NRL auditor has final say on Latrell value**
https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6568778/nrl-auditor-has-final-say-on-latrell-value/?cs=14274&fbclid=IwAR2GSKWzxum5kFG6aDioiefUgMFbUo3kGYd6IqBObLWe0PEDFnKBlCqrZF8

>A list of earnings of every NRL player will help the game's salary cap auditor determine Latrell Mitchell's market value should he accept a cut-price contract from South Sydney.
>
>It's understood NRL auditor Richard Gardham has final discretion to determine market value using a list of comparative players to reach his decision.
>
>Already this summer Mitchell has been offered wildly different contract sums including more than $1 million per season from the Wests Tigers and a withdrawn contract from the Roosters worth $800,000 per year.
>
>South Sydney's $400,000, one-year deal makes Gardham's determination even more important, given NRL's salary cap laws state a player cannot be registered on a contract worth considerably less than his market value.
>
>However, the sum of the Souths deal could be boosted if the Roosters agree to pay part of his contract for this season.
>
>The 22-year-old Kangaroos and State of Origin representative is considered one of the best in the game, and his value will be determined in similar company, such as James Tedesco, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Tom Trbojevic.
>
>All three are on considerably higher salaries.
>
>It's believed Souths' cut-price sum is due to limited space in the salary cap as their priority was to bring Queensland forward Jai Arrow to the club in 2020.
>
>However, it could all change given Monday's confirmation of Arrow's arrival at Redfern in 2021, with Gold Coast reluctant to let their State of Origin star go for the upcoming season.
>
>This could free up space in Souths' salary cap to sign Mitchell on a more substantial contract in 2020, allowing time for the club to offload another player to make room for him in 2021.
>
>It's been reported both Alex Johnston and Dane Gagai could be offloaded to another NRL club.
>
>As the rest of his premiership teammates returned to training on Monday, Mitchell remained with his family on NSW's north coast after being granted a leave of absence from club duties.
>
>Although he is contracted to the Roosters for 2020, it's believed he has played his last game for the club.
>
>However, the longer the situation drags on, the more money the Roosters will pay Mitchell unnecessarily while he is on leave.

I thought Roberts was the replacement for Ingliss?

After the chicken wing career ending tackle(?) the muppet bwaithe put on Craig wing on his return from Japan , I can't see him ever having any info or dealings with south's. One man I would happily punch with my own or anyone else's fist.

Latrell is taking a massive risk if he signs a one year deal on low money.
What happens if he were to get a serious injury next year?
Wave goodbye to the money you wanted to set up your family ... and all the other hangers on surrounding you.

If South’s sign Latrell on a low contract what happens if the NRL auditor puts a value on him worth say $800K that could seriously stuff South’s cap in one hit.

Souths will get their way. Mitchell will claim depression and his desire to be a leader in the aboriginal community. The NRL will be too scared to call him on any of it and will cave in.

If Souths can't get Arrow for 2020, wouldn't they then have a spare 800k or so for Mitchell for 1 year only without moving anyone?

Was thinking the same thing.

What I can’t believe is that Shane Richardson has said Jai Arrow is their main concern and that LM is basically an after thought, They may find 400k for him Or maybe they won’t . Let’s face it, LM is taking on a huge risk , Especially if injured throughout 2020 with the 1 year deal.
On the other hand you have a club like WT, who do consider LM as very important and a marquee signing and offering him almost 1 million dollars a year over 4 years & LM isn’t sure what to do ?
WTF are you waiting for Trell ??????

The other thing is if he goes to South’s he will always be in the shadow of Greg Inglis..

Inglis left a glamour club (Storm) and made his mark at a battling club.
Mitchell can do the same at WT a club on the way up!

He needs to be his own Man & trademark elsewhere, not at Souths.

Can someone tell me: do other sports have this ridiculous circus around layer contracts and movement? Serious question. In the sports I follow, I do not see this theatre played out like this

Yep . The NBA has the issue of no one watching thier games , but the constant trade and signing rumours clogging up the news cycle and social media. They can’t turn the eyeballs in content to eyeballs in broadcast revenue .
If anything I would say the NRL would prefer this.
NRL is now a 12 months a year sport. No other sport ,in Aus ,including AFL can really claim that.

It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if Mitchel came out and said I’m not singing for less than 800 I never was the media made the hole thing up

Don't know if this is a joke or they got hacked !!

What's more concerning is if he NRL believes it is acceptable because then it becomes deliberate salary cap rorting with their approval.

If LM signs with Souths on $400k the NRL should have a team of forensic accountants crawling all over their records. I will be very disappointed if the raid is not in proportion to the AFP raid on the ABC.
