Latu Fainu #282

Any word on his return from his hamstring issues ?

I’ve noticed a lot of hope on the message board has moved his way since the Galvin drama …

Would be nice if he could show us something this year …

I would love him to be ready and put Galvin in reserve grade for 2 years to prove a point. To make it even worse I would not allow him to neg with any club until 30th Nov 2025.

Imagine having the 3 Finau boys in the same team weekly.

Unsure we're doing L Fainu any favours playing him in 1sts, when seemingly not over injury & lacking condition.

I'd play him in NSW cup to build fitness & condition in a less intense setting than 1sts. He is a 5 year investment. No need to break him in year1.

Seems his papers have been stamped but ttime to give J Sullivan another go, especially with Sezar & now Galvin unavailable...Nothing to lose....

It’s a littler more difficult one to solve that it looks on the surface.

The priority issue for his development is less about the grade and more about him playing outside a dominant half.

He is a running, creative 5/8. My opinion of what he needs … in order of priority is:

1. He needs a dominant half to free him up to be a creative, running 5/8 (less load will equal better/faster development)

2. He needs consistency in the team around him. Halves are a ‘high social’ position (it interacts highly with other roles). In old language this translates to he needs the time to build combinations

3. He needs game time

The rub for the coaches at the moment is, state cup is struggling. It doesn’t have a dominant half. The team also changes a lot due to our youth policy and our struggles in first grade.

It’s most likely that Latu would take 10-12 weeks to build some kind of minimum combination even if state cup was stable.

So instead the coaches have him focused on settling into how the first grade team plays. They partially achieve 1. above with Seizer or Api at half.

From here he will probably get more game time. This week will be
1. Bula
6. Latu
7. Api
9. Tallin

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think I’d rather have Bud at 7, with API at 9 and TDS at 14.

But… here is the real question

Do you want a better result next game

Or

A better salary cap next year
It looks like that is the plan, leave the players we are looking to offload in NSW Cup, hope they get fed up and move on because of it.
Wouldn’t a better plan be to give credit where credit is due, promote the players who are performing best in NSW Cup and if they start to bring that form to NRL level like they are capable of doing, it should see us win another game or two before the season finishes and by them playing well at NRL level surely that would give more opportunity for rival clubs to come knocking ?
Bud at 7 on the right and Latu at 6 on the left have the ability to create their fair share of points no doubt about that.

Fox sports article suggesting Latu isnt favoured at the tigers because benji hasn't picked him and other clubs will be sniffing around.

I am pretty sure his injuries have been the reason he's been playing NSW cup.

I know we tried to get him and Galvin together in the halves against the Cowboys at Leichardt before he came off with a HIA.

Just shows how much BS the journos talk.

why wasn’t he picked last weekend though ? There was nothing to lose instead of persisting with Sezer… let’s see what he has FFS … we have been waiting all year
