Leichhardt Council will vote next week on a proposal to name the passageway next to Leichhardt Oval Laurie Nichols Lane.

Cr Darcy Bryne said the shadow-boxing, singlet-wearing Mr Nichols was an identity of the game and the competition’s undisputed No.1 fan.

“It’s time to make sure that Laurie is commemorated properly, and there is no more fitting way to honour his memory than to permanently associate his name with his beloved Leichhardt Oval,” Cr Byrne said.

Balmain Tigers Football Club chairman Leslie Glenn said Mr Nichols would be honoured by the gesture.

“He’d love it but he was never a grandstander,” Mr Glenn said.

“He was always about the club. He was always about the players. He was such a supportive bloke. He gave all the players nicknames and never had a bad word to say about anybody.

“He had some things to say to the opposition but he was never unkind.

“The club gained an awful lot from having Laurie around and we all miss him,” he said.

Laurie always was a true legend of the game as a passionate supporter and Iam glad that they will honour him this way….

Laurie Nichols was one of the true Gentlemen of the game. He was a great loss to the Tigers when he passed away.

It is a nice tribute to have something named after him - and even better that his name can still be associated somehow with the Tigers. It is a shame that at best it will be only a "Lane".

Bad luck they can't rename the Norman "Latchem" Robinson Stand after a true Balmain Legend.
I was coached by "Latchem" and I'll say no more.

The Laurie Nichols Stand has a much better ring to it for mine.
I can still hear him now "Go you Mighty Tigers - Eeee Ahhhhh!!!!"

I agree TT. He was a real character, full of personality and a loyal passionate supporter. It would be fitting to honour him this way.
Sadly there's not many, if any characters like Laurie nowdays.

Met him a few times actually Champion bloke. In the mid 90's i caught a Train to Kogarah to watch a game vs Saints and who was in the Carriage when i hoped on the Train the Great Laurie Nicholls , he said hey young Lad you on your own ? i said yeah my Dad is at work come and sit with me and we will go to the ground together (i had my Balmain Jersey on). The passion he talked about Balmain was unbelievable he had a rhyme for every player .

Which lane are they talking about?

Iwould think somewhere inside the stadium would be better. Be it the Laurie Nicholls stand, hill, tunnel…

A street outside won't get noticed much but inside the ground on gameday and commentators would be able to mention the great man too..

That's a good thought BB. But there's talk of us playing all of our games at ANZ ( or other bigger stadium ) in the future. So a street named after him might be better. Either way it's a great way for Laurie to be remembered

I think it may be the walkwayroadway up to the Glover St gates…..or the laneway between that entrance and the Mary st entrance

I think Laurie should be immortalised with a 'shadow boxing' bronze statue !

I like that idea actually , you could have on the players walk as they run on and the players could touch the statue as they run on for Laurie's inspiration

He's been gone for almost 15 yrs, why are they only doing this now? Is there an election soon?

Overdue

Man a statue on the hill at Leichhardt would be large!

Why would you want it on the Hill Simon ??

Wouldn't most people remember him coming out the tunnel with the Balmain players

Could add to the mystic and the imposing nature of Leichhardt to opposition sides
