Laurie Nichols to have Leichhardt lane named after him

I remember him punching his way along the path below the hill. One of my first memories at the footy

Man a statue on the hill at Leichhardt would be large!

Why would you want it on the Hill Simon ??

Wouldn't most people remember him coming out the tunnel with the Balmain players

Could add to the mystic and the imposing nature of Leichhardt to opposition sides

Nah….I remember him zig zagging his way across the hill going hard when we need a lift and then down onto the paveway in front for more of the same.

Fair enough

Hill it is then

My stand out memory of Laurie was when he went to England for an Ashes tour with the Aussie side in either 86 or 90

They said in parts of England it had been snowing and it was bitterly cold and Laurie was still with the Aussie players in his singlet

How long will Leichhardt be there - Longer than us, probably be there forever.

I think Laurie should be movable. If he is only at Leichhardt and we move (what a catastrophe) that is the end of Laurie.

If he is moveable we can take him to ANZ etc. We could take him to the away games as well. As someone suggested - set him up near the tunnel and the players can give him a high five on the way out. If they only picked up 0.5% of his will to win nobody in the NRL would ever stand a chance.

Laurie - always a champion.

He did love the singlet…and in his later days he was done on the sidelines.

But in his hey day he used to wear a yellowish tiger tee shirt and he would literally cut a swathe through the hill, boxing madly with his "tiger, tigarrrr" mantra, to get the crowd going to rally the boys.

Leichhardt hasnt been the same without him thats for sure.

Id love a statue next to the scoreboard...I'd bet there would be quite a few photos taken with him.

PS….my mum(who i used to go to the footy with when i was a wee lad) was a bit of a snob, used to cringe when laurie would go bananas.....she thought he was quite mad.

But the kids all loved him....and the drunks on the hill too.

I suppose one question we need to ask is would Laurie actually want a statue overseeing WT's games ??

He was very passionate in his stance that he didn't want the Balmain Tigers to merge with Wests

I wouldn't want to do something that would of upset Laurie if he was still alive

I share this view Happy.

I saw Laurie around the old girl many times as a wee lad and enjoyed seeing the passion he had for Balmain. That said, if he were ever going to get a statue (this is pie in the sky stuff BTW,) it would have to be at Leichhardt. He would turn in his grave if it were carried around and placed on display anywhere other than LO. Not only that, but I think it would upset a few WT fans (myself included,) to know that the club carried a bust of a man around when he never embraced the club.

His heart was always with Balmain.

I think it's a cool gesture. Quiet late but cool nonetheless.

He was the only thing I ever liked about balmain. I hope they follow through with it.

Laurie passed away 2 weeks before the inaugural 2000 Season and 2 weeks before he passed away, I recall reading an interview where Laurie answered a journo's question whether he was willing to support the Wests Tigers? He said " even though I'm hurt by the direction Balmain has taken in merging with Wests, I have now accepted it and have been going to the trainings and supporting the Boys, I will be there Round 1". Something along those lines I remember reading.
I'm trying to google his interview he did 4 weeks before the Season kicked off in 2000, but I'm having no luck, if anyone can find it your better than me.

A quietly-spoken, polite man with an huge passion for his footy team… there will always be only one Laurie.

Black singlet on he became a symbol not just of Tigers fans, but all passionate Rugby League fans. Everybody still misses him...

Bugger naming a lane after him... I reckon rename the whole suburb.

Those are sweet memories Simon

Here you go..

It is agreed that Laurie spoke to the team at their final training session before their first game the following week. Wayne Pearce, who was coach at the time, says that Laurie voiced his acceptance of the team, that he told the boys to keep the heart of the Tigers and that he wished them all the best.

Geo you are the :master:

I'm sure he put on a brave face, but being as passionate as he was i don't think he ever could have truly accepted it. I think he died of a broken heart.

He was never given enough time on this Earth to learn to accept it . No one in this Forum back in 1999 was in favour of the changes that were about to occur to there respected Club.
But most supporters on each side of the merge accepted the change and learn to love Wests Tigers and I'm sure if Laurie was given the time he would of as well i reckon .

Yeah I was of a certain mind in '99 and dead against the JV, I thought at the time I'd never accept it.

But it was hard not to look at scores and see how the new club was going, the odd occasion they were on TV I'd watch…I was gradually won over after the first couple of seasons

Some accepted straight away, some took time, some never did, and some still really havent even though they think they have, some have bailed even after a decade...everyones different
