WESTS Tigers forward Liam Fulton has been forced into a premature retirement.

Fulton told team-mates at 11am today that on-going concussion concerns meant he had played his final game of NRL.

FULTON TOLD TO PUT FAMILY BEFORE FOOTBALL

The hard-working back-rower returned today from an overseas holiday, where he made the difficult decision.

Fulton sustained concussion four times in six games this year.

He had another two years remaining on his current contract.

The full story will appear in Friday’s The Daily Telegraph.

Looking like the worst has been feared and confirmed. Liam is a club legend no doubt about it and will be sorely missed not only on the field but off it as well. He has made the right decision to retire for the sake of his own health and shows that Rugby League is just a sport and there are far more pressing things in life than a win or a loss

Big fan of Fulton and appreciate his time at our club. Great club man and played well above his weight.

Great he has put his health and family ahead of rugby league.

At least he won a premiership which a lot of players have not done.

LIAM FULTON ANNOUNCES NRL RETIREMENT

Wests Tigers forward Liam Fulton has today announced that he will retire from Rugby League, effective immediately.

Fulton has suffered a number of concussions during the 2014 season and has made the decision to retire following consultation with his family, teammates, the Club and management.

The 29-year-old played 162 games for Wests Tigers between 2003 and 2014 and was a part of the Club’s 2005 NRL Premiership winning team; he also played 17 games for Super League Club Huddersfield Giants in 2009\. Fulton represented City Origin in 2011 and 2012 and played in the NRL All Stars game in 2011, he was also named Wests Tigers’ Best and Fairest and Player’s Player last year.

Fulton said that the decision to retire was an incredibly tough one to make and he thanked his family and teammates for their support over the last few weeks.

“This was obviously one of the hardest decisions I have ever been faced with,” Fulton said. “It has been a tough couple of weeks but I’m comfortable that I have made the right call.

“I would like to thank the Club for its support and compassion during this time, and also my friends and family who have supported me throughout my 12 year career.

Wests Tigers CEO Grant Mayer commended Fulton on his decision, thanking him for his commitment to the Club over a long period of time.

“Liam has made a very brave decision, one that cannot have been easy for him to make,” said Mayer. “Having spoken at length with Liam, his family and management I know this is the right decision for him and his future health.

“On behalf of Wests Tigers I’d like to thank Liam for his commitment to the Club and look forward to working with him closely into the future,” said Mayer.

Wests Tigers Head Coach Mick Potter praised Fulton for the way he conducted himself during the last few weeks during what was a difficult time for him and his family.

“Liam is a key member of our team and will be sorely missed on the field,” said Potter. “His light-hearted approached to life is refreshing to all of us at Wests Tigers and it’s great that he will remain a part of the Club.

Wests Tigers fans will have the opportunity to show their support for Fulton at the Club’s Round 19 game against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium on Sunday 20 July.

Yeah it's a sad way to end a fantastic career . I hope the NRL compensate him is some way ??
I didn't help when that grub Fa'alogo gave fults a cheap shot after already suffering multiple concussions …. All the best Liam for the future champ !!!!!

Such a shame he couldn't finish on his own terms. He's doing the right thing putting his family first though.

Will never forget when the club had salary cap issues and he sacrificed himself and played in the UK for a year.

Good luck Liam.

What a tragic end to his career. At the end of the day the blokes health and family has to come before football and i'm glad that Liam has made a decision to reflect this notion. Thank you for all that you have done at the Wests Tigers Liam and best wishes for your future endeavours. He should look back on his career and be extremely proud of his achievements in the game.
Thank You Liam!

Shame for him to finish things off this way

Shame for the club to have now lost 3 players in the last few years due to injury. I hope the NRL and the club helps looking after these guys.

Liam Fulton always gave it everything, and is to be admired for that, some blokes when they are done and might wonder did they get as much out of their ability as they could of, there will be no such doubts for Liam.

This might sound odd, but in a way it is a fitting way for Liam to go out, a warrior who gave every last bit until his body said no more….kind of sums up his career for me.

Does that make Robbie last man standing from 05?

Great club man. He will be missed. I wish Liam and his family all the happiness and hope he plays a confining role with the club. Glad he put himself and his family first.

Patty and dene came back? Even Fulton went ESL for a year though.

The most underrated player since I've followed league IMO. Gave it his all in attack and defense. His playmaking was something that set him apart but was never utilised to full extent.

Really sad by this. Tuiaki, Dwyer and now Fulton. Three of my most favourite players forced to quit prematurely. Rugby league can be cruel to everyone I guess.

Hope that cheap short merchant fa'ologo is sitting comfortably.

All the best Liam, hope you can still be associated with the tigers in one way or another. In my eyes, he's already a club legend.

Hopefully he gets a gig behind the scenes.

Mayer said he was hopeing to be working with him,so yeh he deserves a gig, great clubman who will be sorely missed.
Lets use this bad news to our advantage and sign a centre with Fults money.

So sad to see my favourite tiger end his career like this.
Fulton always gave 100% every game and tackled like a machine.
His courage will be sorely missed.
Liam may not have been the biggest player we had but he had the biggest heart & never gave up.
He was always a great club man and encouraged the newer players.
I wish him every success and happiness for the future, whatever it may hold but I hope he will remain a familiar face around West Tigers for many years to come.
Liam on behalf of all the West Tigers supporters, thanks for the awesome memories"

Sad news. One of those players that just rips in and gets dirty. I would wager that every player that ever played along side him loved him.

If there is a positive it may help squeeze Thompson in for next year.

Sad day for Liam and the club ….......but sooo many happy memories to look back on. Like the juggling act to score a try at Marathon that day !
Congratulations on a fine career.
