I’ve just watched it again and that play by Isaako on Benji’s 40/20 might be the single worst effort of the year.
1. He let the ball bounce out before attempting to batt it back in
2. His foot was a metre out so even if the ball didn’t bounce out it still would have been a 40/20
3. He batted it forward so it still would have been a knock on

I’m pretty sure that if he did 2 and 3 it would have been a scrum feed to them.

Saw Blake Ferguson do it one game.

Blake Ferguson's one, I thought was on the fly and off a kick off?

No it was to combat a 40/20 attempt.
He watched it go close to the line then had his foot out and swatted it out over the side line.
The team though you beauty Blake’s taken that into touch but the ref/commentary’s mentioned that’s a smart move by Ferguson, that will be a scrum feed to the defending team.

Fergo may have put the ball into touch short of the 20.

There's no way to nullify a 40/20 by voluntarily putting it into touch after the 20 m. Tedesco did it the other week to force the ball into touch, rather than try and pick it up and be bundled into touch. More wingers should do this rather than dive on the football.

That is a more eloquent explanation than I could muster! As you say player with foot out touching the ball is equivalent to the ball hitting the sideline. Outside 20m it’s a reasonable play, inside does nothing.

Still doesn't explain the feed to Parra. It would have had to have been on the fly for Fergo to win the feed for Parra. I remember he did it last year and everyone was carrying on about it.

I'm not sure I follow. If Fergo is defending a kick and he voluntarily puts it into touch, i.e. touches it with his foot already out, it's a scrum to the defending team, because in effect the ball has gone into touch off the kick.

If Fergo was to do it inside his 20 on a 40/20 attempt it would be a scrum to the attacking side for a successful 40/20.

I'm not clear what you mean by "on the fly".

What round / opponent was it? I don't recall the game and it might be in the highlights.

He is a baby, guy is 18, doesn't turn 19 until October. Less than half my age!

However he's not really small, already 91 kg for a hooker and 181 cm; not quite 6 ft tall. That's basically Farah's playing size.

If it was going out on the full (on the fly) it wouldn't be a 40/20 - it would go back to where he kicked it.

Nofo did a similar thing last year ( I think). The ball was going to land in the field of play but he planted his foot over the sideline and stretched out to touch it before it hit the ground. We got the scrum feed where it was kicked because it was deemed out on the full - very smart play in the right circumstances. You don't have to catch it, you just have to touch it. I was impressed Nofo knew the rule to be honest.

You'll have to ask @Needaname

By on the fly I mean off the boot without grassing (on the full.) If the ball has not grassed in the field of play, Fergo has his foot on/over the sideline, and makes contact, the ball is dead on the full. If the ball has grassed in the field of play before he does the same, that is taken into touch by Fergo. If he's inside his 20, that's a 40/20.

@jirskyr, @Cultured_Bogan.
I cannot remember the round, likely that I cannot remember the exact position of the kick.
It makes sense what you are saying. It would be making the ball dead in either a kick out on the full, a kick for touch or a forty twenty and the corresponding rules that go along with that play apply.
Ferguson may have done it on a kick for touch only.
I’m sorry I can’t remember exactly.

Ball has to be stationary in the field of play for the defending team to make it dead with a foot over the sideline different to the in goal..I don't recall the Fergo one..but In Tedesco's case it was stationary..

In our one the ball was moving so nothing the the defending team did would have got them a scrum ..plus the ball hit the line before he touched it so it was a 40/20..had he touched it whist still moving with a foot out we get the feed..

hope that helps

You are sure about this? Where is this written up?

International rules 2019:
https://www.nrl.com/siteassets/operations/documentation/arl-rules-book-2019.pdf
Ball in touch1. The ball is in touch when it or a player in contact with it touches the touch line or the ground beyond the touchline or any object on or outside the touch

NRL interpretations
https://www.nrl.com/siteassets/operations/documentation/nrl_laws_interpretations_2020.pdf
No mention

It appears to me that the official rules make all kicks in touch even if by a player, though it doesn't specifically say in touch by whom.

I'm not clear how a foot in touch whilst catching a punt on the full would make that kick "Out On The Full" by the kicker, but touching the ball with a foot already in touch (football moving or otherwise) would not constitute the ball being in touch by the kicker.

They specifically changed the law wrt in-goals, because players were consistently putting kicks dead by first stepping out, and they wanted to curb this as a tactic. And that law is written into the above NRL interpretations, but only for in-goal not for touchline.

One thing I’ve noticed, Nofas hands seem better. Hasn’t dropped a kick at him for a little bit if I recall correctly.

I love watching Madge react and ride every play in the coaches box. Has more passion for the games than anyone!
