They were the days. Johnny Purcell battling with Shane Day for the Magpies number 12 jersey. Both excellent hookers too.
And yeah, this thread has fired old Snoddy up a tad.
There is an imbalance … and Wests diehards feel this imbalance season after season.
So I pledge that from 3.40 Sunday the whatever of November to do my bit to redress said imbalance by referring to the JV club from here in and for ever more as WESTS and WESTS only.
I have vowed to uphold a monastic emblem of silence.
Carn WESTS ... WESTS to win ... I support WESTS ... Great try WESTS ... Robbie Farah's is a WESTS legend ... WESTS are on fire ... WESTS .... WESTS ... WESTS ...
Now that was really quite cathartic
Yeah, that works for me.
Newtown is a foundation club and was a 1st grade club from 1909 until 1983 until they were unceremoniously dumped from 1st grade. Newtown were initailly known as the Bluebags which changed in the 1970's to the Jets, the same name they were known by when Newtown played its last 1st grade game in 1983\. The NRL later showed there great benevolence towards this foundation club status by later allowing Newtown to play Premiere League (State
Cup as it is currently known). Today the Newtown club is still known as Jets but are now principaaly a feeder club to a team, Roosters/Eastern Suburbs, which for decades they had great rivalry with. My point is the name Wests Tigers very much represent two great original clubs, Western Suburbs (Wests) and Balmain (Tigers), who are now working together as one great club. West and Tigers supporters should be glad that they they can support Wests Tigers in 1st
grade competition. Unfortunately 1st grade status is a sad memory for Newtown supportors.
I feel for you Henson … And I also feel very sorry for all those disenfranchised Norths people.
I'm hearing you regards being thankful for what we've got ... And I am.
However all this is relative.
And when something feels out of kilter it's very hard to keep a permanent grin.
99% of the JV fans can tell the 1% to get over it (and they do on here regularly) but people like Snoddy and relatives of Johnny Purcell etc are allowed to feel uneasy, and to even express that uneasiness.
As I said, it is all relative. If Newtown had merged with the Roosters back before the purge and became the Newtown Roosters ... I'm sure you'd be irritated by 90% of media references calling the club The Roosters, the colours being red, white and blue with the blue hue being a noticeably dark blue, the spiritual home being refered continually as Bondi Junction, and whenever a comment is sort from a club legend the camera zooms in on Brad Fittler or Luke Ricketson etc etc ...
Of course this sounds like a dream come true given the NSW Cup future the Jets\Bluebags have been resigned to.
If Wests had stayed axed after that horrible night back in 1983 when both the Magpies and Jets were shown the door I'm sure I'd feel exactly as you do ... I'd probably be getting stuck into Balmain supporters bemoaning the fact that Parramatta are dominating their floundering partnership ... Adding, you don't know how lucky you are.
It's all relative ... I could add - at least Newtown are in first division and premiers at that ... Try being a Glebe supporter ... Bit tough for those poor buggers ... Did I say, it's all relative?
