Lui

Well wouldn't be better for Sheens to act now and get Lui Fit for First grade we still have a few more games to go!, I say its a fair call on Tims behalf and a good move
Sure we don,t know the guy Now!! hahaah but come sunday night we will hehehehehe…

Plus he has been training with the first grade squad for the last month or so which was in a recent article so he's coming into the team with a few runs next to benji and the rest of the boys under his belt. If he has what it takes, and judging by his performances in toyota cup he definitely has potential, then I think this game is the one to realise that potential and step up to the grade.

no this isnt the game, look im all for giving him a go, but in the right circumstances, if we lose this game im not saying its luis fault, but its a game we just cant afford to lose, and if we do our finals hopes are gone with our run home, again sheens makes a mind baffling decision, it would be less disruptive for hanbury to play FB and keep moltz at 7, hanbury has done the job before it would of made more sense but this is sheens we are talking about and sense just seems to go out the window

Can't wait to see Lui get a run. Good to finally have a Queenslander back in the team. He is only 19 and has a natural footy ability that doesn't come along too often. The rest of his game can only be developed by playing plently of first grade. I hope this is the first game of an outstanding 15 year career for Lui at the Wests Tigers!

I think it makes perfect sense. It now gives us 4 crafty ball players across the park Farah, Marshall, Lui and also Moltzen who now has the free range and the attacking potency to inject himself into the game from fullback which will just add an extra dimension to the tigers side that we are yet to see this year. He is obviously a good player and full of confidence. TBH I dont think we are weakening one position to strengthen another as Lui is a natural half, Moltzen is a ball playing fullback, and sheens might just of got this one right.

I think lui is a natural 5/8th, not a halfback. To me a halfback is an organiser. This is what worries me - two flairy no 6's playing in 6 and 7\. Moltzen is going to have to yell loud at no 1 to be heard when organising the play.

i agree with anderson silva. as i said previously, i am a big lui fan and really wanted him to get a go about 2 months ago, but now is not the best time for the guy to get his break, with the importance of this and upcoming games.

and also, tigergirlz, youre spot on. lui is an excellent 6\. havent seen him in 7, but doesnt feel right somehow….

again, i dont want to be negative, but a possibility is that the tiges wont make the 8, and these last 4 games will just count for good experience for lui for next season.

also, we could go from one extreme to the other and have too many chiefs trying to run things with 4 of them... i dont think marshall should be organising (despite his amazingly apt surname!) because i think it distracts him from his own game and this is when the errors come. hopefully lui can do this and let benji do whatever...

I hope he kills it, I truly do. but I think U20's form can only count for so much. It's a big step up and generally sorts the men out from the boys, especially defensively. I think it is high-risk move not only to our season but also this kids head but Sheens obviously thinks he is up to it. I would hate for the guy to have a howler cost us a win and be found out in defence, could really damage a potential career.

The inclusion of Lui will not cost us the game as we are still able to shift Morris in if we have to.

In fact I would hazzard a guess that Lui will play 40-50 minutes if going well and than Morris to come on in the 7 slot

it is a big step, and as i say, i have only seen him in about 3 games, but he just looks way ahead of anyone else on the park in toyota cup in my opinion and i think he has been ready for nrl a while; i just think the timing could have been a little better for the guy.

still, you just have to take your opportunities when you get them.

what this does highlight to me is a dramatic change in the dreaded policy of simply shuffling players around. it is great that this season young guys like ayshford, odwyer and now lui have actually been given a go.

I understand your concerns tigergirlz. However in a team such as Wests, the Tigers aren't your usual structured organised outfit. The organiser, orchestrator, maestro of the unit's overall attacking frequency, is the No.9, Farah. He controls, centrals and sparks attack from the ruck. Wests Tigers have no had a solid organiser or traditional halfback since Prince, and even then, he was still learning the trade as a leader after being a natural ball runner like Marshall. So Lui and Marshall are halves. They are specialists, yes, but are neither a custom or traditional 5/8th or Halfback. Both are now known as first and second receives who will share the role sporadically throughout various sets of possession over the 80 mins.

those implying if he costs us a loss.
if we lose to the sharks because of this, then we don't deserve to make the finals.

i know everybody says respect your opponent and all that, but has anyone actually watched the sharks in the last few matches.
they are deadset woeful.

Lui lines up for Wests Tigers' debut
By Steve Jancetic AAP Thu, 13 Aug 2009 17:39:41

Teenage NRL debutant Robert Lui is anything but a fill-in - he's the man Wests Tigers officials have earmarked to partner Benji Marshall for years to come.

Lui will make his NRL debut against Cronulla on Sunday, the Townsville junior getting a crack at the Tigers No.7 jumper courtesy of a broken leg to Shannon Gallant.

But the 19-year-old is no stop-gap measure, given stop-gap measures don't normally get tied to four-year contracts while still in their teens.

No, Lui is seen as the real deal, and he has four weeks to prove he's the answer to a problem that had vexed the Tigers since Scott Prince upped stumps and headed for the Gold Coast.

"I don't want too much pressure on the kid, but he's got a lot of class," assistant coach Royce Simmons said.

"I don't think he'll play too much lower grade football after this week. That's a pretty big wrap to give a player.

"He's a very mature young bloke who will take the field with a lot of confidence and won't be too scared to tell the forwards where to go and won't be too scared to demand the ball."

Asked if the spot was his to lose, Simmons said: "There's only four rounds left in the competition and you're in the starting line-up.

"I think you're in a good position to be in the starting line-up next year."

Brought to Sydney as a 15-year-old, Lui has impressed the Tigers with every step of his development, so much so that they've already got him tied up until the end of the 2011 season, with an option for 2012 in the club's favour.

Coach Tim Sheens brought him into train with the top squad a month ago with a view to having him on standby for an injury in the halves.

But so impressive have his performances been since then that Sheens has opted to move Tim Moltzen - who has been the halfback during the Tigers' current five-match winning streak - to fullback to replace Gallant, with Lui coming in at the scrumbase.

"He's played well all year in the under-20s," Simmons said.

"But particularly the last month since we've rewarded him by bringing him into training, his attitude has been very good and he's played very good in that time."

Worried about upsetting the chemistry four weeks out from the finals and with the side finally having cracked the top eight, Sheens consulted his senior players before bringing Lui into the team.

He need not have worried.

"Coach asked us if we had the confidence in bringing Robbie up into first grade and we were 100 per cent behind that," skipper Robbie Farah said.

"He deserves his opportunity, he's got the backing of us boys in first grade.

"We're just looking forward to playing with him now and hopefully he can take the way he's been playing in 20s and bring it into the top grade.

"He's an impressive kid, you see him in the 20s and you know that he's a class above that level."

Some big wraps on Lui going off that article and you don't normally hear of coaches asking his players in FG whether they would be comfortable having a young debutant step in at halfback to help guide the team around.

yeh, i had the same sort of worry until i read Geo's post in another thread and then a light bult went off above my head and i just thought "oh yeh, thats right…" and realised that 6 & 7 are just numbers on their backs.

so all my worries about lui getting a run now have gone and i think he will go great.

Once Gallant was ruled out for basically the rest of the season, we simply weren`t going to worry any of the good sides by playing a safe old boring side that would have seen Morris at 6 or 7, Hanbury at 1 or moving Lawrence to fullback and including Collis in the centres. Those who believe we could have done this and still been competitive against the top sides is kidding themselves, it hasn`t worked in the past and it certainly wouldn`t have worked at this crunch time of the season.
We had to gamble and bring in a class attacking player or two, Lui is a great addition to our side and I still belive we are one strike backrower away from being ultra competitive and being a chance of repeating `2005.

We only have one player in our ranks that breaks the first attempted tackle on him almost every time he touches the football, that man is Josh Davis. Now I wouldn`t be moving Lawrence or Ayshford from the centres, they both deserve their spots and both defend very well out wide. In my opinion we need to take another gamble and play Josh Davis as an impact back rower off the bench. I realise he hasn`t really ever played back row in the past, but back row these days isn`t a lot different to playing centre, only being one player in from the touchline really !!!

Well said Vicious. Totally agree and although we may of beaten the Sharks with Handbury at fullback I don't think he would of troubled the better teams too much . The coaching staff have faith in Lui, the players have backed him 100% so now let us fans enjoy the 5 games (plus semis  ) too see what Lui can bring to our team next year.

If you're good enough, you're old enough. The kid has ability, has the talent and oozes with class. It's a huge step up, however Lui is a specialist Half _(How refreshing that we've had 2 in the past 6 weeks now),_ can handle the first or second receiver role well. I'm extremely anxious yet excited with his appointment in the No.7.

With the pack going forward, it will help his cause, giving the kid more time to think, act, move. From my observations since watching him as a School Boy with Keebra, he plays a lot on his instinct and isn't afraid to back himself. That's what you want from quality halves.

Many have questioned his defence and will he be able to handly the challenge, the pace when the opposition are attacking. I believe Lui won't be holding back and will be out to impress. I expect him to gain more confidence throughout the duration of the game and will have plenty of support when it the Sharks channel their big men at him. All the best kid. I'll be cheering for you.

Thank goodness! I was starting to get worried, until I read your post, Gobbs!
What is wrong with all you doom-sayers? You winge and complain, because the team is not good enough and that we keep playing players of debatable ability, yet you want to deny a very promising, young player his opportunity. The team had an injury, which is at an unfortunate time. Lui has been groomed for this day for four years! When would be the right time to bring him in, if not now?
The only way you will be able to find out, if he is NRL-standard IS TO PLAY HIM IN THE NRL! If this team is good enough to play in the finals, then Lui's performance is not likely to cause a loss to a struggling team like Cronulla.
Congratulations to the people, who are supporting Robert Lui's selsction.

Well from that article Willow, it looks like the Wests Tigers are giving Lui the rest of the season to form a partnership with Benji in the halves. I am sure Sheens wanted to debut Lui at the start of next season after a hard working pre season, but has decided on this risky play…...I hope it comes off.

I have mixed feeling on quotes like...

"I don't want too much pressure on the kid, but he's got a lot of class," assistant coach Royce Simmons said.

"I don't think he'll play too much lower grade football after this week. That's a pretty big wrap to give a player.
