Luke Brooks #167

On the back of 2 good to dominant games from our forward pack, and with the inclusion of both Bula & a revitalised Nofa...Brooks looks much more effective. Even Wakeham is showing glimpses of being a decent 1st grade player.

It's going to be very interesting what happens if they back it up again next week.

Makes me think he was still playing injured / lacked fitness the first few weeks

Very noticeable change of form the past few weeks

I am not a huge Brooks fan but credit where credit is due, his kicking game has been pretty good, his defence has always been strong and he is looking to run more. His combination with Wakeham, Api and Bula is building nicely. He might not be Adam Reynolds but he is a lot better than a lot of the other options out there. To blame him solely for our lack of attack at times is highly naive.

Brooks is Brooks, his best is still below the top echelon

Brooks has consistently been one of the best halves on the field this year in the games we've played. He has outplayed Cleary and Hunt. Sure he isn't marquee but you can't just grab one of those players off the supermarket shelf.

All halves make mistakes as well. Just watch any game during the week.

He played solid again. Running the ball on the last is tactic plenty of teams are using. Often a better option than risking a 7 tackle set and good opportunity to keep the opposition pinned down in their own 20 with good D. Not sure why some get so wound up about it.

I think it’s clear coaching tactic to run on the last to the corner within the 10mtr zone. Forces team to run out of the corner with a structured defensive line is probably the logic.

We did it 3 times against the Dragons both Brooks and Wakeham threw the pass and each time the center didn’t even attempt to do anything.

Hate it but I don’t think it’s a halves thing as such.

Lara Pitt said that Sheens instructed them to do it at half time in her 2nd half commentary....
It was definitley the coaches instruction.

Dunno why, I don't think it was for the fear of Stuffing up
- Might be trying to put some patience in them and get them Grinding...

I thought their forward pack owned ours after the first change....
Sua and that big bloke were running amok.

We lost ascendancy for the middle 3rd of the game...

Alot of teams have started doing it even if I think we do it too much it's mainly a response to the short dropout trend

Unlike previous years drop outs are no longer a sure thing to build pressure so teams have started to play for field position

Good game by Brooks today. I felt he let us down running the ball on the last tackle the first set after half time. That was a really poor decision and I feel we took a long time to recover from that.

He needs to take the percentage play as much as possible, because the low percentage play will present itself naturally, and that's when he will take advantage. He forced that play after half time and it nearly cost us.

Playing well and talking a lot more, so very happy for him.
That was the HT call from Sheens according to the sideline commentators in regards to running the ball on last

Of course....
Never thought of that - Spotting!!

Same result without the risk of a mistake....

The main advantage is that the defensive line can be set and there's no risk of something happening during a breakdown of play but I agree it's far from my favourite tactic especially against sides like the dragons who aren't known to be good at short dropouts

Back to back decent games. I still don't believe he's our long term answer for 7 but if he can do this consistently I'm happy to keep him on outside a controlling halfback
WOW, that really is something coming from you.

Said plenty of times that I didn't think that having the #6 or #7 on your back really mattered as long as at least one of those was running the show.

We just need to find a controlling half and sign up Luke to a reasonable contract and release all that pressure on him and stop telling him that it's his team.

Maybe we should even put the #6 on his back just in case that #7 has been affecting him psychologically all this time, don't even let him put a ball in a scrum, wouldn't mind betting that he could cause the opposition a bit of damage as first receiver from a scrum.
