Luke Brooks - Mega Thread

Brooks is not an above average half, he's perfectly mediocre. His saving grace is how few good halfbacks have been around his entire career
This kinda supports the idea of keeping Brooks around...

There has not been many good halfbacks during his career span that have been worthy of throwing big $$$ (and off contract). All of the good playmakers are either locked up long term or on their way to retirement town.

We can find another average halfback, it just can't be Brooks. He's been around long enough and failed enough times. He's on good money too

His ability to crap his pants in high pressure situations, even after 150+ games still blows my mind

In a situation where a team makes a like break and get tackled 10 metres out from the tryline, Brooks might be the last halfback in the Competition I'd want being in control

Then your statement is based on your feelings - not Brooks ability - or reality.
The last half? I could rattle off 10 without thinking…
What about last year when the sharks ls just needed someone to kick a goal… and sharks halves missed about 10 of them!!
Townsend even got hooked he was playing so poorly (or maybe that was another game)
you might not want to Believe it, but that doesn’t make it wrong,,,
Brooks is a better than average half, in a very ordinary team - at a very ordinary time for the club.

It wouldn’t matter though, he gets kicked when we lose, and someone else gets the credit when we win… there were players here maligned no matter what for 15 years before him - and there’ll be the same for 15 years after he’s gone… everyone has to blame someone, it’s always easier than admitting there’s actually a larger issue

If any of you are sitting on the fence whether to keep Brooks or not, make your determination after a couple of rounds in seasons proper when it's not *#ssing down with rain and the ball isn't a slippery watermellon.
I thought he and Jackson showed some awesome signs of a working ½s combo.

So, now if it rains he gets automatic pass? and for multiple weeks?
Does every half in the comp get this generosity?

And for how many weeks? 4?
What if it rains 8 times throughout the year? Just ignore those games then?

It's a comical excuse but hey kudos to you anyway...at least it's original.

And seriously how can anyone be sitting on the fence after 9 seasons? It boggles...

It's not based on feelings, it is based on 9 years of evidence. (JC sorry for chiming in 🙂 )

Batboy, even the most ardent of Brooks critics would gladly admit when he has a good game. Me included. I reckon every Brooks critic wishes we wore egg on our faces more! If only!

You just can't blame the rest of the team for him not performing as a halfback. That's on him.
Most of the onus however is on the coaches and management that persist with him.

Very optimistic for Luke Brooks this season. I can really seeing him playing well.

Will improve from god awful to serviceable.

Future immortal. . . .

Don't understand why you are all talking about Brooks. He will be at Newcastle before the season starts.

Phil Rothfield said so, Weidler, Chammas, the lot of them. Many on this forum with the "inside goss" also said so because they knew an Uncles cousins friends next door neighbour.

So it's happening! Only a few days to go before he moves.....

Just goes to show how many BS artist there are in the media and the gullible in here believe it and take it as fact and perpetuate it as fact. They throw darts and some hit, but most don't. This has nothing to do with whether you like Brooks or not, its the fact that the news and reporting was WRONG and LIES.

Like when one of the best week to week halfbacks in the comp for the best part of a decade couldn't perform at Origin...
Pearce couldn't perform, Because the team was garbage and his forwards were getting bashed constantly.
Don't get me wrong, Brooks frustrates me at times also... But who are we getting to replace him with? Hastings "may" do the job....
But in Brooks tenure in the NRL - How, Who and When were we ever a chance at buying a better half?

He's not the best half in the comp - But we haven't had the best anyone in the Comp since Ellis.
He's certainly not the worst either, He's above average - Streets ahead of a bunch of other halves in the comp, In a well below average team... Possibly with an average coach - for most of his career...
It's that simple.

I feel thats an outdated narritive. It used to be true and realistically he was ranked in the top 6 halves in the comp. Now im not so sure.

Jarome Hughes
Mitch Moses
Ben Hunt
Nicho Hynes
DCE
Adam Reynolds
Sam Walker
Nathan Cleary

Are all better than him so at best he is about 9th. 9th out of 16 is not above average!

Depending on the development of young players like Illias, Schneider, Sexton etc he could go lower.

Its really up to Luke to stand up in 2022 and get back in the top 6 or so halfbacks in the game.

It's not an outdated Narrative... You list here simply re-inforces exactly what I've said.
(either that or you've only read half of what I've wrote)
None of those halves turn our team into theirs.... Brooks in those sides, Doesn't turn them into lower table teams like ours.
How's DCE go without Turbo? - Were almost favourites for the spoon last year...
And Nicho hasn't even played an NRL game at 7? - No doubt he's a high talent...
But he's never even played there... Yet he's on your list?

Here you have Brooks at 9th - In a team that's 13th or worse...
He's an above average half, In a well below average side.

Put Brooks in the sides those players are from, With some of the best coaches the game has ever seen - He's on the list. All Day. Every Day.

the Douhie fan boys always have the blinkers on, if we win Brooks did nothing if we lose then all Brooks fault.
I swear some on here death ride 2022 so beloved Douhie can come back at 6

I see how you are looking at it, Fair enough.

However ill just keep it simple and say 90% of the league would rather those 8 players over Luke Brooks if they had a choice.

Personally id take Sexton, Illias and Schneider as well because id prefer their upside over the guy who is middle of the road.

No we don’t, no point in considering upgrading him when he hasn’t even played yet this season, trials you cannot base upgrading him yet and considering he’s been average pretty much his whole career you cannot consider it yet, now I don’t know what money he is on but if he’s on more than 500k the club made a mistake there, Brooks is contracted until 23 but honestly if he’s still not doing good come the end of the season I can see him being moved on if the reported 900K salary is true he’s not a player worth that kind of money if the club does decide to keep him if he is on that kind of money he’ll be taking a massive pay cut if he wants to stay but I hope we just get rid of him, unless he kills it this year, my halves going into 23 would be Doueihi and Hastings but let’s see how 22 fairs for Brooks as well as Tigers

While that may be true, you’re talking about Adam Reynolds the Souths half, not the Broncos half.
I think Moses put it succinctly when asked post game about the battle with his opposing half Luke Brooks..it’s a lot easier to look good when your forwards are going forward.
