Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

Problem with Kent’s argument sack the players is Madge hired the majority of these sackable players. That’s important to remember.

Hired plenty in my time - they'll tell you what you want to hear in the interview/ assessment and some people are great at it.
What they are truly like only comes out over time. The difficulty then is getting them to move on without upsetting others who can't see their negative influence.

WT are going backwards and something needs to change. Sixteen games in and compared to last season's twenty, thus far in this one the side has regressed 15.5% defensively and 6.7% attack wise.

Nearly five extra points to now be 30 leaked and best part of a couple less scored week on week to 20.

Looking back at 2018/19 seasons and the only team now below our WT that was above them then are the donkeys.

This is exactly the reason Maguire needs to go within weeks ..are things going to improve next season? Do not think so , the graph has only gone one way since he arrived .
There needs some real leadership within the club at this present time and the decision needs to be made ,there is a great opportunity for a coach coming in with many off contract and a huge war chest to entice players .
Next season could be territory that this club has not been before and there will be more than the coach being shown the door if the appropriate course is not set in motion quickly.

Well written. I agree with what you have stated.

Of course you would, but sacking the coach on a WTF posters speculation on what might happen next year doesn't make any sense.
Remember Hercules said "stay calm and have a strong coffee"?

The more all this crap comes out the more it seems like damned if we do, damned if we don’t in terms of Maguires job. If he is serious about dealing with these players he thinks are throwing him under the bus, drop them. Seriously the season is over, there has to be some still willing to fight for the jersey. The more and more he just keeps picking the same crap every week, all he’s doing is digging his own grave because these absolute sooks will not play for him. The powers that be need to step in before our next 2 seasons are already ruined before they start

I agree with the majority of what you’ve said. Especially the part of dropping the players that aren’t fitting where we want to get to as a club and a team. If results go south so be it. I want to see consistent effort week in week out and a bit more desire to win and do whatever it takes. People have said it on here before that we have too many players that are happy to just be first graders and I agree wholeheartedly. I think @cochise said it, we need leaders to lead our performance and standards and show the others what’s required. We have too many followers that are prepared to do the bare minimum and if they’ve come from better systems and have played and performed to a higher level there, they drop to our clubs level
After joining the Tigers. We cant keep allowing this to happen.

Paul Kent has launched a stinging attack on the Tigers players after reports some stars have turned on coach Michael Maguire after a comment he made after the loss to the Rabbitohs.

Maguire said in his press conference that he needs men at the club, which ruffled a few feathers amongst the playing group.

“They lost to the Storm 66-16 on the Sunshine Coast and it was a very similar story to their opening half against the Bunnies at Leichhardt Oval,” James Hooper said on Triple M.

“So the players can point fingers and blow up and blame Madge and try and throw off everywhere else, but in relation to the comment that he said about “I need men” like we are all adults.

“Boo hoo, cry me a river like who cares? Get over it.”

Gordon Tallis believes the Tigers club need to support their coach, so that things like player revolts don’t happen.

“The people around him need to support him,” Tallis said.

“So when the players go and whinge to the assistant coach, to the trainers, to the board members, to the CEO it falls on deaf ears.”

“Managers and media are the main ones,” Hooper interjected.

“Too bad because they keep doing it, so who do they have Tim Sheens, Michael Potter, Jason Taylor, Ivan Cleary. There is four in what 10 years?” Tallis said.

Kent called on Maguire to find the players responsible and move them out of the club immediately.

“The best thing Michael Maguire can do is find out who the players are and move them on,” Kent said.

“A lot of good coaches who stick around for a while they identify very quickly who the cancers are in the joint. The guys who [This word has been automatically removed] and moan.

“When you see players in a dressing room starting to get into their little groups that is when you have got to be wary.

“Once they start doing that and if you don’t know what they are talking about and if they are having a [This word has been automatically removed] and moan about your coaching or whatever they are the guys you have got to move on.”

Tallis called on the senior players to squash player revolts before they happen.

“I think you need strong leadership and the senior guys just go, listen guys shut up this is what we are doing,” Tallis said.

“I didn’t agree with all my coaches, but whatever he said he is the boss. That’s it he is the boss and whatever he tells you to do you do it.

“Just shut up and get on with it and after training you can say hey Mate why did we do that? But you never do it on the spot.”

Kent believes the Tigers don’t have enough players that want to win a premiership and they need to move on those that are merely just happy being NRL players.

“I’ll tell you a couple of facts about the Tigers, one they don’t have good enough players to win the comp,” Kent said.

“Two they don’t have tough enough players to win the comp. Three the administration hasn’t been strong enough in terms of standing up to the players because the club is just continually rotating through coaches.

“They have identified Michael Maguire as a coach who has won premierships at two different competitions with two different teams.

“He has got the ability to do it, so they have identified him as the guy that can do it for them so now they have got to stay the course as well.

“What they have got to the players is get on board or get going. It is as simple as that.

“To continue to let this club [This word has been automatically removed] and moan through another season of non-performance and let’s remember no club has gone longer without making the finals than this Tigers club.

“They haven’t made the finals since 2011 so the fact is they are not doing the right job. I don’t think there is enough Tigers players who want to win a comp.

“I was talking to a coach the other day and he said there is not enough winners here. They are just happy to play first grade.

“This is an issue that has been identified by a few other clubs.

“There is not enough players at the Tigers who are burning to win a comp. They are happy playing first grade.

“They like being known as first grade players who brush pass the line when they go to the nightclub. They get a couple of drinks vouchers when they get into the nightclub and all the pretty girls come up and ask them for a dance.”

“It’s a lifestyle for them,” Tallis said.

“Exactly Gordon, but for the great ones they want to win,” Kent said.

Sorry for the language but he’s one of the biggest Maguire dick riders since day one and there is not much to back it. Lives in a fantasy land if he thinks we can just scrap however many players.

There were three of them speaking, which one were you referring to?

Kent in particular, but everyone on fox seems to be team Madge for whatever reason

Because they can see the majority of the team simply aren’t putting in consistent effort. People can say it’s the coaching but effort comes from within and this BS that players don’t play for the coach, Players play for their own pride and pride in the jersey
as well as the coach it’s not coach or nothing

Agree they are paid by the club to play for the club. You keep sending the message to under performing players that they can come here and then pick and choose which coach they will perform for then the chance of success is zero to nothing. And that's why we attract who we do and why players with any level of ambition give us a wide birth. We signed some young players on a promise, we need to show that we mean it or they will get plucked just like all those in the lament thread.

So who are those players then ? I don’t know about you but I burden myself with watching the whole tigers game every week, who is consistently letting the team down ?

I think the challenge is it changes week to week, month to month, but to name a few ;Luche, Garner, Mybe, Tamou, Jet, even Twal and Douehi at times (and that hurts me to say as I love those guys). That’s the challenge for Madge, there’s so many he can’t turf the majority of the team but it’s almost what’s needed. I think the Coaching staff would have a reasonable idea on who the trouble makers and ppl unsettling the group are and I’d drop them first. The public don’t need to been made aware of why the changes are being made but the players need to be clear on why so that the entire roster understand it’s not going to be tolerated

Maguire is not beyond being accountable, but the rumblings about his job being at stake due to the teams performance allows the players to think that he will be held accountable - that is what we do and there are players in our squad who have known no other way.

I mean they are not wrong

If any of those journo allegations have any basis in fact, it proves only one thing which we already know..they’re just immature. We need another wing too. Just thought I’d slip that in ?

To be fair, the side did again finish ninth in McGuire's first year with our for and against better than in 2018. That said, WT finished that season knowing the Traitor was leaving and would likely have finished better under different circumstances.

Changing coaches too often is bad, I think there is no one who would deny that. Unfortunately I feel if Cleary had stayed we could have been talking finals footy by now as he seemed to be able to draw out the best from players.. Yes it would be best if Madge could all of a sudden find something, by any means - sack half the team, who cares, to get players on the park who show grit and determination. If this doesn't happen by the end of the year he should go. Tell me any professional sporting organisation, where after three years at the helm, the team gets progressively worse each year, the coach is not put on notice or outright sacked. As I've stated before, so should half a dozen players as well.

At the moment we simply don’t have enough players who want to win.
That is clear from their performances and their whinging when they are called out for it.
It’s easy to say that Madge has signed the majority of these guys but he has done so with very few options available to him with the club seemingly on the nose and self imposed salary cap issues.
The club doesn’t need to make a decision about Madge, they need to make a decision from the board down throughout the organisation as to how serious they are about winning a competition.
If the answer is yes we are serious, then they need to identify who is willing to roll up the sleeves and get there and who isn’t.
To this end, as a fan, I would like to see them tell a few of these guys they won’t be at the WT next year.
But in reality it is not that simple.
I believe Hartigan is working towards this but it’s a long game as has been seen with the focus on development players.
I believe this intent has also been shown through our recent and well documented attempts to sign some prized targets - we have been selective with who we have approached, looking for specific skill sets to fill identified gaps in the roster.
Hopefully we can have some wins in this area soon.

Firstly,I cant support sacking the coach on biased opinion from people on a forum who have little or no knowledge of what truely is going on or being said at board level..
Secondly the critics who keep saying that this is his roster,Hartigan was employed so we purchase the best players available with money available..so its not all on Madge atm...
Thirdly ...Madge has identified with Hartigan the best possible youth to develope into NRL prospects...they are learning and developing as Madge gives them NRL debuts (Cini comes to mind)...
Lastly Madge has been seen numerous times with the KOE cup players and managers and is helping them along the way to becoming NRL standard players...

BUT lets keep talking sack the coach.....its what Wests Tigers do best...

Therein lies the problem. The players won’t get sacked so around the merry go around we go again

Kent hit the nail on the head.

As noted by Moir previously, Noffa needs to go - and I’m all for it!

Him and Brooks have been there through all these changes.

It’s hard to criticise Brooks over the past month, he’s one of the only ones having a go.

Reading a fair bit on WT sacking coaches and players only knowing such that just doesn't add up. Sheens was sacked in 2012 after nine seasons when no current players were in the squad and only two players were here when Taylor got the boot around Easter in 2017.

Those are the only sackings of a coach in about the time that one ages to be able to vote and drink alcohol, so there is no routine sacking of coaches and it certainly isn't normal practice at WT.

Yep we sacked Sheens after 10 years, didn’t renew Potter, sacked Taylor and Cleary left. That’s 2 sackings (in contract) in 18 years? It’s in the press so much everyone’s started to believe it.
