Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

I was always in two minds about Madge as our coach.

On one hand he had a great cv and results over several years. But on the other hand, he got the boot at Souths after some player discontent.

After watching the recent documentary, he's 100% the right guy for our club.

Great motivator, really strong vision, very supportive of the guys and I've seen more than a few little things that suggests he's very good at 'mind games' (I mean that in a positive way).

Compared to what I have saw behind the scenes from ivan Cleary, Madge is miles ahead.

So why can't we make the top 8?

I think it's simple, we don't have a roster that's mentally strong enough to play at top 8 quality footy for consistent enough periods. No other coach will change that.

It's important that we stick with Madge for a few more seasons, it does look like he's building a winning culture.

What is your reasoning to say he’s building a winning culture?

The same reasoning as those saying there is no one better to replace Madge, how the hell do you know **if you don't try**, what we are doing is not only not making us better, it's making us worse

Because if we get it wrong (again), then we go backwards (again) and who is going to want to come here, except junior coaches, like Morris etc.
Madge needs to be given the time to straighten the place out. Players will come and go for this to happen.
I've not heard anyone say they are happy with our results, but many (including Madge) believe the current squad is just not up to it. All clubs continually review there rosters.

I would actually plump for Morris or Ciraldo, Madge can't attract quality players, he can't motivate or train the ones he brought in to any decent standard either.
There is no justification to keep a non performing coach because you are scared of failure, we are failing, and failing harder each year he has been here, that is all you need to say see you later mate

There’s no justification for keeping non performing players either… that’s our biggest problem.

The problem is we can’t just move them on, and half our top 30 are contracted to 2023 and beyond. We’re stuck with what we’ve got

Look at the Roosters.
Robinson thinks he can't win a comp with the NSW half still under contract ...gone.
Fast forward three years and he feels the same about a young gun half still under contract ...gone.
He does what he has to to win games - and keep his job.

That’s not a realistic option for WT imo.

Sounds like we have got rid of Mbye ... there must be takers for some of the others we need to get rid of.

We’re paying half his salary. Do you want to pay half the salary of 15 players to leave?

Can you name a club who have offloaded 2 players in one off season where they’d be paying 400k of each players contract the following year?

Spot on…..you want to see improvement at this time of the year. Something to build on in the preseason. We are no better than round one, if anything we have gone a tad backwards.

Disagree, they have actually pushed a few top eight teams in recent weeks and some of their younger players are improving week by week. Add few good signings like Reynolds and Capewell and they will be a much better side next year.

3 wins all season is not showing signs of improvement at this stage of the competition. It's a sign that you need to strengthen your squad which is what they are doing.

Benny and Block are allowed to have a view, as do others who may agree or disagree with that view. But remember these guys aren’t allowed near the players so they are seeing the same thing we saw. 😂 which is a controlled moment in the life of Madge basically.
If they’re not creating controversy and getting quoted in social media the next day, then they won’t keep their jobs. I like those guys, wish we had them playing today.

If that's their 'job' it's a pathetic one.

cracker interview. the fact that he's come out and said he's playing the patience game will put a lot of minds at ease. just comes down to whether or not we as a club can properly develop them. from what I've seen, we've done ok so far.

Classy mate, real classy, I listened to that, he made some valid points, but in the end he lied, he said he had no money for players, yet he was willing to pay Latrell over a million, JAC $600+, TPJ $700, Finucane $600+, there are more examples.
He is just making excuses for missing out on players, the salary cap is not why he didn't land those players, if he thinks that, he needs punting today because he is delusional, which I think he may be.
If he was any good he would have the players aiming up each week, there have been far to many games this year the players never turned up, that is on the coach, 12 or 14 players all don't have an off day the same time about 5 times this year.
His coaching style, or lack of has bugger all players buying in, now you are saying we move on 12 players in this one off season to appease an out of touch coach, who is going to replace them, Madge couldn't attract a fly to to a turd in regards to top line players

You do realise that the rorters can do that because of the influence they have where it counts.The vast majority of clubs do not have the luxury of handling matters the same way.

True, but isnt the point they are not hamstrung by contracts. They dont let that stop action to address issue. They move the player on, contract payout or not.

When the Roosters signed Cronk for $1m a season, they still had Pearce and Keary, also on $1m each. That's $3 m worth of halves and maybe even had Nikorima in reserves on $500k. They never play by the rules.

851...if Madge turns things around within his tenure and we have a far better culture and we make the finals WITH what we have atm....would you consider that you have been impatient and a bit over the top with your summation of Madge .....
