I've refrained from posting after Sunday, but I can't help it at this point.
How easy would it have been to be a coach this week in terms of motivation. An all-time legend passes away, sold out crowd, massive build up, club does plenty of good things in the lead up (except for Lee to hold the jersey up, he's only chairman for his own self interest), and we produce THAT. We conceded 34 points to a Ron Massey Cup backline.
Now Payten may have out-coached us, but that's not the issue here. If Madge couldn't get them up for that, something's wrong. Very wrong. His new coaching staff was lauded as the backroom changes we needed, but we've gone backwards. Webster heads to Penrith and look how they're travelling, and I've never rated the bloke. Josh Hannay has done plenty for Cronulla's defensive resilience, same goes for Cameron Ciraldo at Penrith, and yet Wayne Collins, and Madge (who everyone has always said is a defence-oriented coach) have done zero for us. We had 6 months of pre-season and weren't able to count numbers at any point last Sunday. Those early shifts by the Cowboys made me sick.
James Roberts unfortunately is a ghost of his former self. The selection of Ofahengaue in the back row was questionable to say the least and to say that his bench rotation has been robotic for the past 3 years is the understatement of the century.
Very torn at the moment. I always wanted Madge to succeed but we need an internal review sooner rather than later before this gets even worse. We finally have our pathways and depth in a good place, with an array of excellent young talent that is on the verge of hitting the top grade, and they're either going to leave or not hit their straps like Brooks unless we work out what's going on in there. If that ends in Madge leaving, I won't be disappointed if it means we have someone that can rally the troops. This has gone on far too long.
I believe Madge is too insecure to have assistant coach like Neil Henry or a John Morris
Payten did him in the strategy dept last Sunday. It looked like it came straight from the Sheens' play book. Having Morris as an assistant would hugely benefit the team and our junior development.
I don't know about that. Possession was around 60/40 our way and even in the diabolical first half we had more ball. Their tries weren't really the result of astute coaching but a combination of lack of effort and Nofa having a shocker. That Drinkwater try was unacceptable no matter who the opposition coach was.
That first try blew us off the park. It was premeditated. Payten well knows Nofoaluma's shortcomings. For us it was bad but for RL, brillant.
I think you’re giving Big Todd a bit too much credit. The Cowboys kid was in a pretty standard position. There was no set move or anything. Nofa just did a terrible job.
That try was brilliant. Hated it because it destroyed us in the first half. As a football supporter I loved it. Full credit to Payten he has a lot offer. Pity we couldn't see it.
Maybe if he went about things the right way he would still be here?
