Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

I was never a fan of the entire sack Madge idea, but its growing on me. Madge got sacked from the Bunnies because his big bodied forward focused structured style of play wasn't working and he lack either the willingness or ability to change, When he came here I was all on board, however three years down the track and still the players haven't bought into his culture, standards, player accountability mantra and defense driven style of play. Something has give either the players or Madge or someone has to go.
Here we are three years on, the rules have changed and to a degree so has the style of play, and yet here we are playing five hit ups for a bomb and hope for the best. Our back line can't get set as it takes the forwards until the 4th tackle to get back on side. Players are dropped, usually only for a week, then back in first's, it seems to be a kick in the pants driven activity not to find form or learn how to play the game motive.
Madge is still playing a the same big bodied forward focused style of play as 2013-17, without the quality cattle to do it, the game has changed and again he seems to lack the willingness or the ability to change.

I've said this many times, Madge doesn't have Crowe and Hartigan doesn't have Politis to attract quality players and now we're seeing their true abilities. The club didn't do their due diligence with their signings.
I still can't believe they gave Madge an extension when no other club was interested in signing him in the first place.

Not sure im getting the reference to releasing the handbrake as part of a gameplan.

Do people really think his gameplan would be 5 one out hitups and midfield bomb? A premiership winning coach..

Its all down to effort of which we had none in that first half.

The more likely scenario is they are scared to make a mistake

Fear is not an ideal driver for improved performance. A coach must get the players onboard with his ethos and ability including man management skills.

JT had none of these, and I have seen nothing to suggest Madge has either, he has had enough time to make an improvement, yet we have gone backwards

Just wondering whether or not we can put this whole "Madge has lost the dressing room" rubbish can be put to bed now.

It's all on the players always has been. Look what they can do when they all try their guts out

How about we see if we can do it more that once every few games. That was our first impressive performance for a long long time. Let’s see if they can back it up

My thoughts are that to get the performance up for one week is fine, but do it consistently for the remainder of the season is quite a separate issue.

Hopefully it clicks in their brain how good they can be and they do it more instead of them being upset they lost and stop caring again lol. You never know with this lot

It's not just Maguire dealing with inconsistent performances. The Titans looked like a z grade side yesterday and as for the halves woeful - Holbrook had no answers. The game can get away from teams very quickly and only the best sides will win consistently.

No idea why the players got up for this game and not the previous games this season? Even the win was uninspiring. We had Roberts and Doueihi, a coach, all Invested heavily in the outcome, plus the Benji factor? Also, it must be easy to get up for a game against Mitchell, Walker and Reynolds, all grubby players? Is the team finally growing into a team? Good coaching? Who knows what turned things around? Whatever it was, we won’t know if we’re at that level of development until we can string together a few games like that. Imo, Madge has always appeared to be a humble guy who just wants to win. He gets a bad and undeserved reputation from a small minority of players who are trying to protect their quail eggs.

Much better effort last night. We ticked off one of the issues last night...intensity.

I'd next week we can keep the intensity, plus a bit more smarts:
- less one out hitups
- take advantage of the big pack and push for more offloads
- get off our line faster (there's still laziness off the ball)
- depth in the backs and have rehearsed moves - we still look like we are winging it
- Get rid of stupid, late in the tackle count set restarts

The other thing is, Madge talks about intensity/playing for each other as if it's a game plan. IMO intensity is a by product of doing the above well.

All last night's performance shows is that we can grind, but we still lack a whole lot before I start singing the coaches praises. I hope he can turn it around, however we are 6 games in and still look unorganised.

On a positive note, I thought keeping mbye on with other playmakers was a good move as it gave us more mobility. Unfortunately Kepaoa got injured.

From Fanny Weidlers column today in SMH.

“Michael Maguire is in a tenuous position at Wests Tigers. Officials at the club are openly discussing the prospect of letting him go.

However, given the club’s ongoing struggles – it is now 10 years since they played finals and 16 since they won the premiership – it is time they started to look seriously at the front office as well. The pressure will grow on chief executive Justin Pascoe if the Tigers can’t turn things around.“

Pascoe should be 1st to go ..
What’s he done in 5 years?

Don't see the benefit of letting him go at this point in time. Let's see if he can turn it around this year, we've got a good run of games coming up now.

No matter what happens with our coach we need to hold onto our young talent especially our spine players. Laurie Doueihi and Simpkin are talents.

I’m not a fan of Madge but I don’t see the point of firing him right now. If we lose our next 5 or 6 on the trot though and end up 1-10, probably time to part ways.

Yeah that would be unacceptable. We have a pretty good draw coming up, then 4 hard games during origin period then a good run to the end of the season. We aren't that far from
The 8 so just need to play like that every week from now on!

What more can Pascoe do atm?

The only thing that bring the club to form is young players. Current form won't attract big name players to the club. We need to produce and hold on to them.

Ha, well you can't trust what the club or players say publicy.
Who really knows, but it's obvious that the team isn't humming. Hopefully it turns around.
