Madge vs JT vs Potter vs Cleary

As much as we dislike Ivan, as a coach he made the right decision for himself.

He obviously saw a window of opportunity closing slowly at the Panthers and realised they had the roster to seriously challenge for the next few years and at the same time he realised the Tigers just didn't.

History so far is showing he was right

Cleary showed his true colours by complaining about refs trying to get Canberra back into the game. He’s top of the table, 8 wins in a row, and won convincingly.

He’s got nothing on Madge

Lol yes I must admit he has done a good job with Penrith. I honestly thought that they had missed their premiership window when they had a great side for a couple of years under Griffin, but faltered in the finals, then sacked the coach and lost some really good players in the process - i.e. RCG, CHN, DWZ, Blake, Maloney & Moylan.

However, they have unearthed some really good juniors who are actually realising their potential in the top grade, they’re playing great footy. They have an awesome forward pack, which is a good mix of experience and youth, James Tamou is a very good captain who is still going strong and is highly underrated and of course Cleary junior has now gone to the next level of halfback play, after being quite inconsistent early on.

Can this all be attributed to Cleary’s coaching? Some of it yes, but some of it can also be attributed to the groundwork done by Gould and the club in general over the years. Getting rid of some of the ‘deadwood’ mentioned above (many of whom are actually going great at other clubs btw) has opened the opportunity for other youngsters to make their mark, players who are perhaps more suited to Penrith’s style of play under Cleary.

Penrith were once my second favourite team, I still have nothing but admiration for the team, but sadly my disgust at what Cleary Sr and Penrith’s administration did to our club has still left a bad taste in my mouth so I am finding it hard to wish them Premiership success anytime soon. So two straight losses and an ignominious crash out of the finals, after having such a great regular season, would be a bit of karma for this long suffering Wets Tigers supporter.

Penrith were rubbish until Barrett sorted out the attack. Cleary is a numpty

Whenever a penrith player gets interviewed they always make sure to mention how big of an influence Baz is behind the scenes. The players love playing for him

And from all reports he was very loved at manly aswell, however unfortunately was pushed before he jumped

Every coach has a plan. It’s such waffle when someone goes on about Madge would have a plan. It’s like me having a plan when I go to work tomorrow. It’s a real buzzword that has become popular over the years.

100% mate, no one knows if this plan is any good or if is going the way he wants. I have seen that many good plans fail because unforeseen circumstances, the really only measure of success those outside the club can see is results and they do not appear to be going the right way at them moment.

I think people outside the club have a much more objective view about our results this year - most never gave us much hope of making the 8 before the first whistle blew and it looks like they were right.
We were pretty resilient until the Warriors game and last night the floodgates opened against a more fancied opposition despite WTs fans hoping for the best.
Cleary imo failed miserably with a talent laden squad last year and now this year they are playing at a level that is expected of them. Maguire could only dream of having the depth and talent that Penrith has and we are no where near that level or position and it will take more than him to do it alone.

Are we really any better off with Madge. Let me say, this isn’t a call to sack the guy, because what better option would be available to us. However, is he really taking us to heights that we failed to reach with the previous 3? Because from where I am sitting, the results are the same.

It has to be said, that for 18 months we’ve been waxing on how much of an upgrade Madge was over Cleary. When you see how the Panthers are going, was it really. Again, not saying Madge is hopeless, but he’s not doing anything that the 3 others didn’t do. Potter and JT had no salary cap to work with yet got the same results, yet didn’t have that excuse. Madge has signed something like 22-23 players out of 30, and he needs time. It makes no sense.

I bet we are paying Madge far more than 2 of the 3 mentioned

The whole club is a mess still ...we need to pick a year ...strip it all back to it's core and start again

Pick a year then !
Don’t keep me in suspense ?

2022 in my opinion ..fair bit of cap space ..Madge of contract .....5 players off contract in 2023 if you want to keep any of them ...no one can then accuse us of not giving Mage enough time ..then again who cares if they do

It was $1.75 to $2.25 at kick off ....we had a 3.5 start ...the bookies and smart judges were calling it the toughest game of the weekend to pick

Does that include you Happy because you have been death riding them all week. From where I sit you never gave them a chance in hell and were already predicting a loss in the Bulldogs game the following week - or have I got you all wrong?

Madge would have to have a plan.

To continually buy overpriced free agents is a false economy. Didn't work with the Dogs, the Knights or us. Madge seems to be instilling a grass roots to first grade approach for our club moving forward. Great article in the paper recently about his goal to invest in the relationship again between the club and St Gregory's.

He seems to be reluctant to pay overs for players which is great for us. When our junior pathway is secure and we start getting results from that and the style of football is all down the line, we'll build our long term culture. He appears to be instilling a disciplined approach to the squad and sure along the way there will be snowflakes who don't like it, but that's his style and we all know it

We have some great young players now (Blore, twal etc) and hopefully we can get a good nucleus moving forward.

This is how I see Madge's plan. He just needs to be left alone to get things moving. No Board involvement, no whiteanting, just a bit more time.

Just my opinion of course

One funny thing is when we lose it’s apparently because the players are sick of Madge’s coaching and that he’s too hard on them, despite the fact we have been losing games like that since the club first existed Nothing to do with Madge lol

What makes me laugh is the fact these blokes are playing in a very tough competition where they pick origin and county reps from and yet are on big salaries but cant handle tough training or a coach that is preparing them for the tough tasks at hand...

please go cry me a river ....soft wannabees...

It’s rubbish. Good teams have tough coaches, Walters joined from Melbourne and said Madge wasn’t even as tough as Bellamy, it’s more rumours than fact, sure he’s tough but so are all the good coaches.

That is actually the exact problem I have, what is happening now is what has been happening for 10 years. 2 weeks ago everyone was saying we have turned the corner, it just disappointing that we haven't and the exact same problems are occuring.

Gonna take a long time to get that out of the club. Goes right down to the core of the clubs culture and mentality and it’s very hard to fix.

In the current climate (bubble) you need a strong leader who the players will respect. You just have to look at what's happening on the leaderboard to see which teams have poor man managers. Madge came with a reputation and it's obvious he hasn't learnt from his mistakes. Let him move on and bring in a coach like Griffin maybe

Allegedly a Griffin was also a hard taskmaster. Arthur, Bellamy, Madge, Des, all of them known for it. Then there are the others. Which way is best?
