Madges Presser

When I read the forums it’s all about sacking Madge, so it makes me think maybe it is?

So I go and watch a game, see players like David Nofoaluma give up multiple time getting his man, but gets let off because he scores some points.

End of the day, I don’t blame the coach for this, not one bit.

I blame the players now, simple as that.

If we didn’t hand the ball over at the start of the game, or make simple mistakes to make the opposition score, then we would have won.

Titans first try - I believe Laurie was up in the defensive line, not at the back, where he would have kicked the ball dead.

Second try - Douhie was kicking, so the link between Luch and Mbye was open, Brimson scoots through, Douhie misses, Laurie at the back took on Brimson but he passes to Peachy, couldn’t tell you who’s fault here really.

Third try - Tamou and Luch tackle Wallace poorly and he offloads, so the blame is on them two for this one.

Fourth try - Cini, no contest for the ball against don, I could say why couldn’t Laurie push across further but the fact was that he assumed Cini had it covered.

Fifth try - I see all over forums that people are pretty much blaming Brooks this one for the short kick, I just feel Fogarty Is lucky he got it without knocking it on - after this tho Nofa did pretty ordinary defence and let Sami score the easiest try ever - he gave up in my eyes.

Sixth try - knock on wasn’t actually a try.

What’s there to say.

Is this the coach? Or the lazy players.

I thought Madge was honest in his presser,he said WE have to sort out the defense, meaning he is blaming players and coaches...he knows he has a hard task ahead of him to hone the skills of the inexperienced as well as get the best out of the experienced...
He also said that we work hard at training and the group is working well,to me thats on the training paddock with the coaches out there with them...
Let me put it another way,if Madge isnt out there with them and they cant produce the efforts on the playing field like they do on the training paddock,to me the players havent got the football smarts or ability to convert what they do at training to win games...
Players mentality, football smarts and ability win games as a team...unfortunately some of the GROUP lack several of these necessities to win games and play for each.....

This club is rotten! From head to toe.

I don't buy this stuff. It's not factual. To me it's a cop out.

We need to win games.

It's bigger than players and coaches. We've had the same issues for a decade no matter who's at the club, it's not a coincidence.

Yes something is not right because I can’t fathom how you can have virtually a whole new team of players, different coaches, recruitment staff & administrators over 10 years and still end up with the exact same weaknesses as a team and the exact same lacklustre performances on the field. Supporting this team is not good for anyone’s mental health.

Nice analysis and I’d go a step further. All the tries are on the team because we’re always relying on someone else. The good teams have 3 or 4 guys show up when there is a dangerous situation in defence, not us.

The second try we pulled that move against the bunnies when GI kicked off.
We spread the ball to where GI should have been defending, that was just good coaching by Holbrook.

Correct, they are mostly young and inexperienced with a focus on not making mistakes.
I honestly think we don’t really know how good this roster is. We just assume they are flogs because that’s all they show us? They do appear average though? My guess is that they are a reflection of the entire organisation, in which case, they should carefully consider the Elias proposal.

Accurate call.

The coach isn't out there missing tackles and dropping balls or building a game plan around such blunders.

I don't think overall that our players are bad. How often is it said on this forum that this or that player would excel in a different team/system?
I don't think Maguire is a bad coach. I think he has had a few misses but otherwise I think I get where he's headed.
We know what we have. We have a bunch of young up and coming players with good skill sets but without experience. We also have a few experienced players to show the younger blokes how its done, what the 1%'s and low skill but high energy/commitment plays are.
Structurally, player wise, this team is the opposite of teams like the storm or roosters. Structurally each of those teams have a lot of experienced players that all know their roles well technically and through experience. When new/young players are inserted into their systems they are brought along by a team full of experienced old guards to show them how it's done. We don't have that luxury.
Maguire really is rebuilding Wests Tigers from the ground up. That includes building the system. It should really come as no surprise that someone like Cini (for example) makes some basic errors because he is a raw recruit and he has to learn on the go. He doesn't have a lot of older heads around to cover for him, remind him of how the system works.
I think before we all start to panic and say 'sack the coach' 'sack the players' 'sack the CEO' 'sack the board' sit back and try to understand the immensity of what Maguire is trying to accomplish and where each player is on his learning curve.
Keep Maguire. Keep the players. Be disappointed (along with the coach and players) and hope for the best as players grow into their positions.

One of the best and truest posts to date...well said mate...

Watched it due to all the comments on this thread.

I do agree it was slightly more refreshing then the fluff

Most concerning comment was
“You look at the top teams in the competition and every play counts,”
"I shouldn’t have to tell players to be like that. They have to want to be like that. They have got to want to be the players and the staff that want to get the Wests Tigers out of this position we are in."

Just a job for these clowns

I just don’t know what the answer is anymore.
The fact that our defence remains hopeless, he can’t get the team to show some energy and player like Nofa who continually makes the same defensive reads over and over again.
I know it’s the players but boy the coach has to take quite a bit of responsibility for this mess of a team.

Maybe, just maybe @momo_amp_medo the answer is
when our younger players are ready to be promoted en masse to first grade [provided they continue to play well] their coach will be promoted with them to replace Madge.

Yes you may be right.
Must say ..... that’s not been far from my mind.

Thoughtful post Magpies. Rewarding excellence is a good way to lift us from near bottom. I'm not sure Maguire can be left in place. I believe his tenure should end this week.

The team has been overhauled but the same issues remain.

The most concerning parts of the presser IMO were the, albeit brief, moments Madge started to agree with the questioning "the club has always been like this" and "not really your fault mate, club is hopeless" themed questions...

He only slipped for a moment, but you could see him leaning to "hell yeah...this club is a rabble, not my fault" mode...

Which would be fine after 12 months...but he has had almost three years.

He looked really, really frustrated in the presser...and 'almost' mentally beaten.

internal review NOW

Stuff the review, if the Board don't know what the problem is, then they are the problem.
Madge: unable to coach to the team he has, unable to coach to the modern game, unable to get players to buy in.
Players: unprofessional overpaid under performing prima donna's, need to be accountable for their actions and/lack off
Management: expect fans to spend their hard earned to be members, go to games, buy the merchandise, support the sponsors and accept that they get nothing in return.
Fans: this has been going on for years and we keep on tolerating this garbage.

The rot started when we knifed potter. Never recovered despite using the word culture exactly 24,492 times in interviews since then.

If we are going to knife another coach then it's time to forgive Cleary, why would you stay? Looking at all the coaches we've tried his days were clearly numbered (jokes. Still hate him).

If we do ditch him then time to look for a young coach who can make the boys "feel loved". Flogging them doesn't work they are too weak. Bring back the boys club at least you could watch the games without feeling like you need to burn your jersey while you are wearing it.
