Magpie Power Banner - Where is it?

Hi Michael,

I can't remember seeing you or your Dad at Lidcombe Oval but I can remember you in the early days after the Magpies moved to Campbelltown. Yes it's a great sign he had … We were usually outnumbered by other clubs supporters so it was always good to see the Magpie Power banner held aloft .... Happy days !

Cheers,
Bob

Hey Bob

Me and dad started going to watch magpies in the last 2 yrs of lidcombe. we used to sit in front of the grandstand, they had this little supporters club section fenced off and thats where we sat until dad made his 1st banner, then got told off for holding it up so then after moved to the hill for like the last days of lidcombe. living in leumeah we were happy that magpies moved there and went straight to the hill where the boys sat, and stayed until the day he died.

I dont get to many games these days been busy. With this being maybe the last year the magpies will fly around as an unmerged side i was thinking about bringing the old banner out for one more day but thats still a little undecided.

Cheers

Please please do bring the banner out again.

Maybe for the Magpies last game of the season.

I know our football clubs manager Daniel Watson Hayes would love to get it to a game.

I know exactly where you mean. Were you at the last Lidcombe game against Easts when they had the breakfast and after match function ? We lost that day but gee it was a good day. It's ironic me and my Dad lived at Lidcombe so they were going from us to you and your Dad ! We sure have some happy memories to look back on … It used to be such a celebration when we won ... Probably because we didn't win too many back then ! I think I can remember you at Penrith Park probably about 20 years ago now walking back to Penrith station with your Dad. It was a wet afternoon and we had a rare win up there. These days the fans go crook after we lose one game .... Don't know how they would have got on if they lived through our era !

Glad to advise that the "Magpie Power" banner will make it to atleast 1 more NSW Cup game this year.

Can remember the game was still a kid but there is some things u just cant forget

I always look back at what i call "The Good ol Days" with so many great memories

17 Wooden spoons and still wouldnt miss a game, win lose or draw we all would still be there the week after cheering away

Hahaha …. I'm not sure why we did it !!! Maybe it was loyalty, maybe it was just In case we won and we weren't there to see it ( we never used to get a TV game) or maybe we just loved the Old Maggie's ! I know we did it tough but it sure makes you appreciate what we have today.

Talk about a walk back in history…

Great that the Magpie Power sign has been located.

Most, if not all the other flags were stored under the Leagues club, however, I think I may have a few of the really big flags, however after many years I have no idea in what state they may be, or where they actually are now. I will do some looking.

As already stated, they were the good old days… Going to every single game, regardless where the Pie's were sitting on the ladder, including crazy country drives to trial games and pre season cup games.

Highlight… or at least funniest memory was a Saturday match at Belmore against the Doggies (ABC TV game) and towards the end of the game the ball was kicked out after a penalty… I caught the ball and ran for my life out the gate… back then one just had to get there hands on a real Steeden football… lol

I did have some photos posted on the old forum of the whole group of us on the hill including Shuey with the sign… will try and dig them up as well

Do you remember the really wet days when there was hardly anyone there ?!?!
I remember a game against Newtown that finished a 6-all draw …. The official crowd was about 1250 but I'm sure they were counting feet ! I was sitting behind the posts in my usual spot in front of the scoreboard when Ken Wilson had a shot at field goal that just faded at the death .... I felt Soooo happy we got a draw !

i think all of the above, u just couldnt miss a game

remembering the good ol days last night, remembering Bruiser Clark used to sit on the hill before the game dad always yelled at him "give us a wave bruiser give us a wave" that would never happen these days players sitting on the hill or with the crowd before the game

How good is that … Yeah they're not up on the hill anymore. Trevor Cogger was sitting up on the hill at Lidcombe one day and they called him to the dressing room over the PA. There was an injury and he had to play first grade after playing in under 23's ... Think it was against Manly.

Wasn't Bruiser Clarke something special. They had him and Ian Schubert in the kissing booth at the Save the Magpies fete down at Burwood Park in 1985\. Not sure how much money they raised ... Probably wasn't much ! I think that was another reason we used to go every week because they were trying to kick us out of the comp so I wanted to go and show my support. If Campbelltown didn't come along we never would have survived.

Bruiser was more than something special

Glad the move to campbelltown happened, not only coz it took me 5 mins to walk to the ground, it was good for the area, doubt we would of not survived without the move, the west is a big area, there would of been a ground somewhere for us.

Great days Rohan.

Remember getting busted stealing Ribena at the factory near Lidcombe Oval?

Remember that real Steeden you talk of getting knocked off you the very next week?

Speaking of banners, I haven't noticed the 'C'Mon Wests' banner at games this year either?????[/quote

The person no longer supports WT due to treatment of WSM Side of JV (his opinion not mine) he has also been banned from the WT forum for some comments that were made.

Ribena… lol :roll

Re the Steeden… what goes around comes around I guess…

Thinking about some of the old-old days (for me anyways)… Lidcombe oval with all the flags in front
of the scoreboard… I can't remember which game it was, probably vs St Choke… but Lee Crooks kicking
a last minute penalty goal from just over the half way line to win the game for the 'pies.

Plus the original years at Orana Park when we were all to the left side of the grandstand… I recall a few people going for a fall down the steep hill behind us towards the tennis club… and abusing some Parramatta player on the sideline and they were only a brain snap away from jumping the fence…

Yeah I was there that day Proteus …. But it was Gary Warnacke who kicked a field goal to give us a 17-16 lead. St.choke went for the short kick off and it didn't go 10 .... That's when Lee Crooks kicked a worm burner penalty goal from half way to make it 19-16\. St.choke kicked off again and this time got the ball back and we had a very nervous last 90 seconds to hang on and win. It truly was one of the great upsets of all time. Just a shame there was only about 4,000 there to see it. For me that day it was like winning the grand final ... I was just Soooo happy !

I wonder who that was? Probably the same guy that nearly made Paul Taylor jump the fence at Parra Stadium?

My favourite forum WT thread ever. Great to reminisce and know that there are other westies out there. Seem to recall celebrating a draw at lidcombe in my early youth..maybe 7-7 against Canterbury? The Mortimer bros were devastated. I collected loose scraps of electric tape strewn on the field as a momento…so thrilled we didn't lose.

I that match was played at Belmore … That was the Mick Luibinskis match wasn't it ?
Remember Peter Moore complained about him coming on as a replacement and they took our point of us.
Think you at least had to play half a reserve grade or third grade match
