It was a black day for the black and white magpies as Western Suburbs suffered perhaps their most humiliating defeat in the club's history when they totally capitulated to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 78-0 at Campbelltown Stadium.
The Bulldogs had too much class for the hapless Magpies who were outplayed in every facet of the game. Luke McDougall scored a hatrick of tries while Tim Lafai scored 30 points from two tries and 11 goals.

Things went horribly wrong for the Magpies right from the kick-off. As Aaron Sweeney took the ball up on the first play, he was ruled to have lost the ball in the tackle 10 metres out from his tryline. To compound the error, he was penalised for back chatting. On Canterbiry's first tackle, Aaron was penalised again by the referee. In the next play, Tim Browne was held up over the line by the Magpie defence however the
Bulldogs scored within the ensuing six tackles when a bomb was put up on the last tackle which was spilt by their centre, Brett Lane however he was able to scoop the ball into the hands of winger, Ratu Tagive to score out wide. Tim Lafai converted and he would get plenty of practice before the day was over. Canterbury 6 Wests 0 after 2 minutes.
Canterbury were in again at the 11 minute mark when Tagive scored his second try after the Magpies dropped the ball on the Bulldogs 40 metre line who in turn were able to work down field and quick hands by Michael Lett and Lane before the ball was accepted by Tagive to score in the corner. Lafai missed the conversion attempt and it was now 10-0.

Canterbury's next try came at the 14 minute mark when East Campbelltown Eagles junior, Tim Lafai scored from another bomb when Luke McDougall gathered the ball and passed off the ground when not held for Tim to score an easy four pointer. His conversion attempt of his own try was waved away but things were looking ominous at 14-0 in as many minutes.
Luke McDougall then scored the first of his three tries for the afternoon at the 16 minute mark by running around the compressed Magpies defence down the touchline. Tackled short of the line, the play moved right before being switched back left by Lett to McDougall who scored an easy try. Lafai again missed the conversion attempt but it was now 18-0 in even time.
At the 20 minute mark, the Bulldogs scored again. A great dummy half run by Shane Pumipi from his own 40 metre line picked a flying Michael Lett on his inside with a miraculous gather who then passed to former Auckland Vulcans forward, James Gavet to score. Lafai added the extras and it was now 24-0.

Western Suburbs were then able to keep possesion during a 10 minute spell thanks to two penalties in Canterbury's half but were unable to make good use of promoting the football with their attack falling away and Canterbury made Wests pay for their lack of finishing with another try at the 32nd minute mark when Kose Lelei scored under the sticks after a great offload by replacement forward, Ray Moujalli near halfway found Michael Lett in support who in turn passed to Kose. Lafai was on target with the conversion for a 30-0 scoreline.
Trent Culter, who was causing the Magpie defence all sorts of bother, scored in the 37th minute after making a beautiful weaving run through the middle and raced 35 metres to score under the posts. Lafai added the extras and it was 36-0 at halftime.

The first half exposed the Magpies inability to lock up the ball in tackles with many a time the Bulldogs being able to offload even with the attention of two or sometimes three Magpie defenders. The Bulldogs, with their experienced backline, were able to capitalise on Wests inexperienced outwide.

The second half saw Wests given three back to back penalties within the first six minutes but again, were unable to mount any form of effective attack and it was the Bulldogs who scored seven minutes into the second half when Tim Lafai exploited poor defence out wide to send Luke McDougall on a 40 metre run to the tryline. Lafai kicked the extras for a 42-0 scoreline.
At the 52 minute mark, McDougall scored his third try for the afternoon after taking an intercept on the Bulldogs 10 metre line and then sprinting away to score. Two Magpie defenders started to chase but gave up completely with Luke still having around 25 metres to run which allowed him to being the ball closer to the goalpost. Lafai made no mistake with the conversion for a 48-0 scoreline.
The dogs were in again on the 55 minute mark after receiving a penalty on Wests 40 metre line and Ray Moujalli scored an easy try after a one on one missed tackle close to the tryline. Lafai added the extras & it was 54-0 and the half century was registered.
Just two minutes later, Lett scored after Culter broke free from an attempted tackle on the halfway line and passed to Lett for an easy dash to the tryline, scoring under the black dot. Lafai then made it 60-0.
Wests then had their only genuine scoring chance in the game at the 60th minute mark when a cross field kick by Nigel Millgate early in the tackle count on Canterbury's 20 metre line was caught on the fly in a spectacular leap by winger Daniel Perkins only to then put his foot into touch when in the process of planting the ball over the tryline.
Trent Cutler then scored at the 68th minute mark when he stepped and jinked between two defenders to score near the posts. Its a complete mystery as to why the evergreen Cutler has not played more NRL games for the Bulldogs or anyone else for that matter as he has been the mainstay of the Bulldogs attack in the NSW Cup for several years either at fullback or in the halves and continues to bewilder many opposition defences. Lafai added two points for a 66-0 scoreline.
Further tries to the Bulldogs in the 72 minute by Martin Paupau who raced 35 metres to score out wide without a hand being laid on him and in the final minute by Tim Lafai after the dogs decided to run on the last tackle and a simple passing movement ended in Lafai crossing the line and improving the position near the posts. He added the extras for the two final tries for a scoreline to finish up at 78-0.

For the Magpies, former East Campbelltown Eagles junior and Sydney Roosters U20 player, Tom Morrison gave his all in defence as did prop Jay Maseuli and Dean Parata whilst David Fifita was the only Wests player to cause any sort of concern in attack against the Bulldogs.
For Canterbury, there was none better then Trent Cutler in attack whilst their forwards were simply a class above the Magpie pack. The Bulldogs were a class above in everything they did today and after loosing their previous two matches, are back in the winners circle and mean business. They never let up today and game the Magpies a very painful lesson in what it takes to win football matches.

For heavens sake please end the suffering and combine the teams for next season. Those who support this farsical situation …. Well surely no one can support this can they ?

There is no other choice for 2013 and beyond. A single WT nsw cup team is inevitable based simply on results and general support for both teams.

I really really hope so mate … As much as I disapprove of the State Cup in its current format, what we are seeing just defiles a former great club ... In fact it isn't the great club I used to know ... It's just a shadow of its former self.

That is a sad scoreline indeed. Sorry to see what has happened to the Magpies.
I also agree that the NSW cup side should be a Wests Tigers team.

Let's be realistic they had 2 weeks to put a team together thanks to sheens & humpty. Tim sheens should hang his head in shame. His mandate is to develop rugby league in MacArthur not turn it into a laughing stock. This is the problem with the NRL they don't care about the grass roots as long as the 1st grade gets it's money.

So some of the Bret players, who were thrashed by Windsor, should be playing for the Magpies, and that solves the problem …. Right !
