Mahe Fonua

He's official then?
Havent seen anything yet

I was surprised to see jake mamo over there, i know hes a tool, but a pretty handy player
Why did he leave? Used to be the retirement calling for NRL players, not anymore I guess

HULL FC OBLITERATE DEPLETED CATALANS

Ex-NRL player Steve Michaels scored three tries and took home man of the match honours in Hull FC’s 62-0 demolition of Catalans in round six of the Challenge Cup.

**Wests Tigers-bound flyer Mahe Fonua also bagged one of the 12 tries.**
The margin would have been even larger had Hull goalkicker Marc Sneyd had his radar on target, only converting two of seven attempts.

Catalans are in the midst of a massive injury crisis with 11 top grade players sidelined which gave the side a touch of mystery in the lead-up to the game due to a number of lower-graders being called in.

“From a coaching point of view I’ve given very little information on these blokes coming in because I’ve not seen a lot of them play,” FC coach Radford told Hull Daily Mail before the game.

“We’ve had to Google one or two but that is the nature of the beast.”

Looks like it is widely accepted that Fonua will be a tiger!

Get paid well to play footy in a country where they're more interested in football (read: sokkah,) players, play in relative anonymity and within farting distance of Europe.

If I had the chance I would have too, can understand why a lot of players do it.

I thought it strange that Mamo went to ESL, obviously out of favour with Brown.

Never rated this guy and also think he is a bit of a hot head.

I don't remember a whole lot of him in the NRL to be honest however the YouTube montage of him seems to be pretty impressive. I'm sure he's got a few technical flaws but he seems to have a lot of game breaking abilities as well. The tigers atm aren't exactly every players preferred destination given our track record of turmoil so if we have to take on board guys like Fonua then so be it.
You don't need world class players in every position to win comps. A solid spine behind a forward pack capable of churning solid metres and making plenty of tackles are the basic foundations of a good side. If you look at our outside backs in 2005 and even our forward pack for that matter they weren't word beaters but worked hard for each other and as a team. I'll take a team with ticker over a team of flashy cocks any day.

Another player out of the Melbourne system. Played largely as a backup and came through the Victorian league system (nursery of champions).
Am sure all 177 cm of him will turn the teams fortunes around

Maybe not the 177cm but the 105kg won't go astray…

Mahe Fonua set for NRL return
AAP on May 23, 2017, 7:50 am

UK Super League club Hull will release former Melbourne Storm winger Mahe Fonua from the last season of his three-year contract for family reasons.

The 24-year-old will return to Australia with his wife Christine at the end of the season and is expected to join Wests Tigers upon his return.

Hull coach Lee Radford indicated that Fonua would return to Australian with his full blessing.

"We are obviously disappointed to lose a player of Mahe's quality but we completely understand his reasons for returning home," Radford said.

"It is not the way of our club to stand in the way of a player in these circumstances and Mahe and his family will leave with our blessing and best wishes.

"He arrived as a bit of an unknown quantity to many people but leaves us having made a real impression on the club and the competition.

"He has had the opportunity to prove himself, develop his game and returns to the NRL as a better player, which could be our approach again should the right player and opportunity present itself."

Fonua was a tryscorer in Hull's long-awaited Challenge Cup final win over Warrington at Wembley last August and was named in the Dream Team after an impressive first season in Super League.

"I am extremely grateful for the club's support and understanding of the situation and how accommodating they have been," Fonua said.

"I have always had ambitions to return to the NRL at some stage but the timing now is important for my family and for us to be back closer to home."

Fonua scored 24 tries in 50 appearances during his first stint in the NRL.

Be under no illusion, this will be a good signing. He is a very solid backline player and will add plenty to the Tigers. He is an international and has been to a grand final with Melbourne (although I dont think he played in it)!?! It's this experience peppered with young and some more established players which will give us much needed direction and level headedness in 2018.

But he will probably be a centre as it suits his body built.

I would be pretty disappointed if true. Much rather someone actually playing at NRL level to be our centre for 2018.

Hopoate, Gagai, Chambers, etc yet we sign Fonua…

We were never going to get any of them.

We have had luck with bringing people from
Super League including Pat Richards and Gareth Ellis. He has been playing well and scoring lots of tries by all accounts?
Hopefully he is a good one and another ex super leaguer to excel. Age is on our side too

We need to remember that you can't sign a team of superstars. You need to be searching for improving talent. He has performed extremely well on the UK which may or may not translate to the nrl. However these kind of signings give us a chance to get an upcoming superstar without the financial burden.

Mate, the guys you list there to play centre are asking for $600-$700k maybe bar Hopoate who would be a little less. I am liking this moneyball approach to next season.
