Manaia Cherrington signs with Cronulla Sharks (James Hooper)

I don't know why we've let Cherrington go. He looks a lot better than Ballin and who knows how Liddle will turn out.

If I recall, TT said Liddle was outperforming Cherry in almost every area.. I guess they just made a logical decision and chose Liddle - we can't keep both. I know it was only one FG game, but Liddle looks like he can hold his own in there, was fairly solid.

**Sharks sign Kiwi hooker**
Exciting young hooker Manaia Cherrington has signed on to play for the Sharks in 2017.
>
A member of the New Zealand squad for the 2015 Four Nations tournament, the 21-year-old Cherrington has agreed to a one-year deal.
>
Currently at the Tigers, Cherrington is an explosive dummy half runner and with the retirement of Michael Ennis has the perfect opportunity to establish himself in the top grade at the Sharks next season.
>
After putting pen to paper on a contract, Cherrington expressed his excitement about joining the Sharks next year.
>
“The boys here at the Sharks are going really well, it’s exciting times and I can’t wait to be a part of it,” Cherrington said.
>
A teammate of Sharks backline star Gerard Beale in the New Zealand Four Nations squad last year, Cherrington will be reacquainting himself with his Kiwi counterpart in 2017.
>
“I spoke to him (Gerard) and he is really excited for me and I’m looking forward to getting started in November,” he said.
>
Hailing from Whangarei in New Zealand’s far north, Cherrington moved to Australia as a 10-year-old and has come through the grades at Balmain with the likes of Luke Brooks and Mitch Moses. He also represented the Junior Kiwis in 2013 and 2014.
>
Since making his debut in 2015 Cherrington has played 16 games in the NRL, 11 last year and five matches so far in 2016.
>
Cherrington will arrive at the Sharks in November for the start of pre-season training, joining fellow youngsters such as Jack Bird, Valentine Holmes and Fa'amanu Brown in the Sharks NRL full-time squad.

Dissapointing but Liddle's timing makes him more appealing to the club. IF their ages were reveresed I'd say Manaia would be the one with a contract for next year.

I thought Cherro was great last year but struggled in first grade this year, his defence has always been an issue and never really improved whereas Liddle has always been stronger in that department.

We certainly don't want to go into next season with 2 young rookie hookers on our books as the only fit hookers. Cherry's defence hasn't improved much. He's good in attack but a liability in defence until he fills out more and improves his technique.

While I was previously of the belief Cherry was better this season has left me with no doubt Liddle is the better player now, and will most probably be a much better player in the future.

We need a semi-experienced hooker for our squad next year. McIlwrick, Mortimer etc. Minimum wage but with first-grade experience but not demanding to be in the top 17.

Good luck to Cherrington at the Sharks, but I'm glad we kept Liddle. Future NSW hooker.

One year deal on minimum wage - $80k.

Basically playing for his career next season.

I really wish we'd kept him for this price. I watched him last weekend in reserves and he is a good dummy half. Maybe he needs to work on his defence but he definitely can do a good job at dummy half.

He played 10mins…but yes it was a good 10mins

I just saw Jacob with another TRY assist...

Maybe Liddle will be a gun. I freaken hope so. It's just that I wouldn't be putting all my eggs into the one basket especially when Cherrington has looked like a quality option on numerous occasions.
