Marina Go resigns Barry O'Farrell appointed

A very good appointment. A lot of naive people on here thinking that all business leaders and politicians all play nice. They don't. They know how to bend the rules, assert pressure and push the boundaries when required.

We sure as hell don't need a cleanskin as our Chair. Our club is always in the middle of drama and getting picked on by the big boys. We need someone who has the capacity to play with the big boys and their games than always be looked at as an outsider.

Barry will give us respect, corporate backing and much more. Much, much better than promoting some egotistical dribbler with a footy background from Wests or Balmain.

Isn't there a political topic on the forum to discuss that side of life?

Anyway, welcome to the tigers, Barry.

Good question. I don't recall them either. Let's not be naïve, corruption occurs on both sides of politics. But for the sake of balance I'll mention a few Labor names - Eddie Obeid, Joe Tripodi, Ian Macdonald, Tony Kelly and going back deep into history who could forget Rex Jackson who as prisons minister took bribes to secure early release for convicted criminals. But I agree with other posters that this stuff is better placed under political threads.

Wow,
I don't even remember that.
Apologies.
I promise no more political comments
I'll stick to sport.
On the other hand, those developers could be handy for TPPs

Good point. We whinge about Easts, Melbourne and Brisbane always getting away with blue murder. Well, they have astute operators at their helm. Couldn't hurt to have an ex-pollie board simply for connections and ability to bend the rules.

Only a rort when you're not in on it.

It's only a rort when you get caught, which he did.

**Wests Tigers have today announced that former New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell has been appointed Chair of the Wests Tigers Board.**

The 43rd Premier of New South Wales and Minister for Western Sydney from 2011 to 2014, O’Farrell is currently the CEO of Racing Australia and Chair of the board for the New South Wales Rugby League’s Foundation and Diabetes Australia.

A long-standing Member of Wests Tigers, O’Farrell will formally step in to the role as Chair in the coming week with Marina Go departing the club.

O'Farrell will be unveiled as Wests Tigers Chair at a press conference at 3:00pm today alongside Head Coach Michael Maguire and outgoing Chair Marina Go.

Full details will be available afterwards on the club's website.

Very well said BB.

I take my hats off to the ashfield board. They've put in someone strong who won't be just a figure head.

I'm glad he wasn't the chair when we needed to create our controls though. Marina has done a great job to ensure those processes are in place now for someone like Barry to run with.

Well done WT. It's amazing how far we've come in 3 years.

Firstly, everyone wishes Tigers were more savvy like the Roosters, and you can bet your life that Uncle Nick does not play by the rules in getting what he wants.

Then some folks are so quick to discount politicians - I've seen the phrase "fat cats" several times - but good pollys aren't just lucky dummies, they are highly skilled tacticians. As Premier, BOF was ultimately responsible for an annual budget of hundreds of billions of dollars, which categorically dwarfs the kind of numbers Tigers are dealing with. He had to deal with his own electorate, elections, lobby groups and an aggressive opposition - again, comfortably more difficult and belligerent than any potential Wests/Balmain faction activity.

He's a passionate Tigers fan, which I think helps, not just to use his experience and connections, but to be passionate about the outcome. I was very supportive of Marina Go, but also imagine if Marina Go came from a passionate Wests Tigers background - she could have potentially done an even better job.

Lastly, trying to get some business big-wig to chair the board - where do we find such a person? How many of them have the spare time to be on football boards? And if you could convince someone like Harry T or James Packer to be on your board, do you think they'd really listen to the other board members? The bloke who used to do the weather and the ex-muso? Harry T would swat them aside and run Tigers like his own personal brand… which may or may not be a good thing.

Wests Tigers appoint former New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell as chair
3 hrs ago

Wests Tigers have announced former New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell to replace Marina Go as chair of the club's board.

Since resigning from State Parliament four years ago, the former Minister for Western Sydney has served on numerous sports boards.

The 43rd Premier of NSW is currently the CEO of Racing Australia and chair of the New South Wales Rugby League’s Foundation and Diabetes Australia.

O'Farrell, who is a long-standing Member of Wests Tigers, is expected to take over from Go on Monday.

Go, whose initial four-year term on the Tigers board expired in December, has been in conflict with NRL boss Todd Greenberg and the governing body over the harsh penalties handed down.

NRL has since agreed to reduce the fine to $350,000 after the club admitted wrongdoing.

Wests Tigers were in a dire financial predicament when Go took over as chair in 2015\. Under her watch, the Tigers turned a profit for the first time in the club's history.

Poor decision. He has links to shady Balmain types like Nick Di Giralimo and Benny Elias. A backward step if ever there was one.

There you go …. back to the bad old days ! Back door Benny is back ... they did not try looking to hard for a replacement. That would be due diligence!
