All I know is this guy gave the captaincy to Princey in 2005 because he thought the team would work better that way. Not sure if injury forced his hand but he sure never made a fuss. Unlike some captains it wasn't about him but about the teams best interest.
The idea that Payten is his preferred coach sounds like a DT special to me.
O'Neill is a champion of a bloke and would be a great addition to our club in this role, but I think you're giving him a bit too much credit on this one. Sheens made the change when Buckets got hurt mid-way through the year & stayed with Prince when he returned, something O'Neill has never forgiven him for.
In regard to Payten, he is highly respected amongst the playing group, has had a decent apprenticeship in NYC (1 Premiership & 1 PF in 2 seasons) and had knows a lot of the youngsters in this group inside out. I know a lot of people are going on about a 'boys club' culture, but there is a lot to be said about having one of your own in charge. That is what good club cultures are built on, keeping strong leaders like O'Neill & Payten involved with the club.
Great post. O'Neill and Payten both command respect.
Payten is a white ant and has No respect as a man never want him near this club EVER!
