Marshall helped Wests Tigers fullback JamesTedesco decide

Contract negotiations are just that - and you have to start somewhere. You certainly don't start with your maximum amount payable, as you have 33 other guys that need to fit into the budget also.

We had to fight to resign him last time, so although I don't know what he was on, I am sure he was on much more than many of the other U20's players bar Brooks and Moses.

Sounds to me like the negotiations got to a stage where we offered what we could, and a desperate club offered him a lot more. They are going to axe a stack of players in their "clean out", so they could offer whatever they liked. I don't think Teddy is worth the money they are saying….he might be in three years time, but the Raiders will only have him for one more year after that before the terms are reviewed.

So as I see it they have paid overs for 3 years and better have a damn good physio!

Reading between the lines we got Teddy and his management offside very early in the process when by all accounts we offered him a contract well below market value and if reports are correct it was just on par with what he is getting now. A lot of trust went out the window than.

Could be wrong but it seems Mayer gambled and got it wrong. Sad really because he was such a important part of the jigsaw. You only have had to been at the games over the past month to see what very little attacking options we have. You can have the likes of Brooks Mosses and Austen, but without players willing to hit their balls and kicks at speed and have a sense something is on nothing much will happen.

From where I sit, its not about Teddy being a greedy person, rather a club that botched it up. Dont get me wrong Mayer has a near impossible task trying to squeeze everyone into the cap but I just think this could have been handled better and I have no doubt it will bite us and probably big time

I have no doubt you are on the money Supercoach

Let me say up front I am fine with JT looking after Number 1 - for that sort of money….

I think though if what is said above is true then it is a little precious. As any business person knows, in a negotiation you always low ball to start and build. GM has to fit everyone within a tight budget so every dollar he can save on one player he can spend on another.

IF JT was offended by the initial offer and that then soured all of the ongoing negotiations, like i said, either too precious petal, or as others have suggested that was the excuse as there were other factors in play here like personality fall outs or other factors that meant we were not getting his signature regardless.

I am sure we will never REALLY know the whys and wherefores, we just all sook for a while and move on...

If he had a family and a mortgage I could understand it. But being a 21 year old kid living at home it all seems pretty sad to me how much of a driver money was. Maybe there's a new pair of shoes coming out he wants to buy

And what happens if he gets an injury like Tuiaki ,MacKinnon ,Dwyer ??

If there is anything people need to understand that being a professional footballer isn't a long time gig What is the average career of an NRL player (40-50 odd games I thought was mentioned )
You take the dollars when you can

People have the right to set themselves up for life after football

The Tigers will regret this decision for many seasons to come

Wonder if people will react the same way if Bodene Thompson joins Teddy at the Raiders ??

I get what you're saying, but surely $2m over 4 years will go a long way to set someone up for life after football. And that's if Teddy only plays for the next 4 years. I'm also pretty sure most footballers continue to work after their footy days are over.

If you want to talk averages, the average salary in Australia is $70,000 p.a… Teddy will earn over 7x that amount every year, and that's based on the Tigers offer, not the Raiders. If you want to look at it another way, it will take over 28 years for someone to earn $2m if they were on the average Australian salary, Teddy will do it in 4.

I have to say, I don't actually think this was Teddy's decision. Surely he got advice from family, friends and maybe even his manager...I just wished they put a price on happiness like KP did.

Anyway, I still want Teddy to play NRL as it will give us the best chance at winning the comp this year (which is unlikely...), and may even give us a chance of retaining him (i'm thinking similar to Moltzen and Papalli)

James Tedesco owes the Wests Tigers' fans absolutely nothing. He finishes his contract at the end of 2014 and starts a new one with a different club for 2015\. It really doesn't matter what some "fans" reckon; he paid for and accepted advice from someone who managed to get him a substantial pay rise. Nothing to do with being greedy, a lot to do with being smart. If, as seems to be the case, he would have earned the same money here over four years as at Canberra over three years - why should he work a year for nothing? Would you?

The hate for Tedesco on this forum is bordering on the ridiculous BUT also bordering on defamatory. I think the mods should have a think about what is allowed to be said here because a good lawyer could make some big bucks at the expense of some juvenile posters and also the moderators.

Oh please…a bunch of passionate and pi55ed off fans can vent their frustration and anger. He's not being defamed.

I'd be happier if he just came out and admitted his decision was based purely on more money. What he's actually said is that he thinks the he would be happier and have better outcomes playing with Canberra as opposed to playing with "his mates" I wonder how Brookes etc feel about that.

Good luck to him, we move on.

We offered what we could and it wasn't enough. One positive is that we drove his price up so that's a few hundred thousand that Canberra don't have to buy someone else. Them overspending weakens their ability to strengthen their overall squad.

One other thing in his interview - when he said "the offer just didn't get to where WE wanted it"…

Who is the we? Him and his manager? His manager is on commission of course it didn't get to where Ayoub wanted it. I wish JT said "it didn't get to where I wanted it".

Take some accountability for the decision.

No-one to blame here other than a poorly performing coach absolutely desperate to grasp any small victory as perceived by the media, even if it meant paying roughly double the true market value for a 21yo kid.
For Stuart it creates a diversion from the numerous losses he's racked up at the Raiders from day one,& generates hope for 2015even though nothing will change because of his own incompetence.I also buys him time, which he'll need plenty of .
The fact that Milford knocked back $1 mill pa says it all
JT,Ayoub,& Mayer all did their job as best as cld be expected & predicted.
Blame loser Stuart if you need a scapegoat

Can you imagine the conversation though …

Benji : Mayer is a %#*@, he didn't pay me what I wanted, he forced me out of the club.

Braith : You can't buy a decent latte in Campbelltown. Get the hell out of there.

Moltz : If you stick around, where will I play?

Just a thought … when Mr T was released a few weeks back, nearly every player in the club jumped onto social media and wished him well and told of their disappointment that he wouldn't be remaining a Tiger.

With the Tedesco announcement yesterday, the only player to wish him well via social media that I can recall is Blake Austin. There has been zero from everyone else, which I find a little weird considering Mr T didn't even play a game of First Grade, yet Teddy has been with the club since he was a kid, grew up with a lot of the boys, and it seems like they have brushed him.

Might be a non-issue, but its possible that his team-mates aren't too impressed with Teddy's decision.

This is what I'm concerned about - that this might end up destabilizing the team for the rest of the season. It's bad enough that we're not going to have Tedesco around from next year onwards, but I was really hoping they could all put in a good show together for the remainder of this season, at least, but if some of the players are peeved about his decision, then this season could end up being ruined also. Let's face it we've seen that happen before.

And the other thing i find interesting as far as the team mate thing is concerned….and I am willing to be corrected on this....but i thought i noticed throughout this year whilst he was injured.....that whenever the TV cameras scanned the benches, there were always injured players to be seen, but i don't believe i ever saw JT sitting with the team.....anyone else notice this or am i just seeing conspiracies everywhere???

Fulton was sitting in the coach's box on Saturday night. Braith was there last Campbelltown game as he was suspended. Didn't see JT there on either occasion

Has barely attended any games since injury fullstop

was there last sat night and close to the players area and tede$co was sitting in the players area with dene, some nyc players and what looked like a couple of mates. sirro the elder was in front of him during the second half. penny for his thoughts that night !

would be ironic, if wests-tigers win the comp next season, and raiders don't make the top 8.
wonder what Teddy would be thinking.

Marshall should be the last person you would take advice from in contract talks. Marshall left almost $2.4M on the table for 3 three years with the Tigers to play with St George for less than half that money. Some brains trust he and his manager are.

I have no doubt that Benji is bitter about his slide from the NRL greats to the also rans these days and as they say " u always hurt the ones closest to you"…...and I don't think benji is missing putting crap on the Tigers these days.

Hope we give him a real belting when we play the dragons.

The deal was probably brokered months ago, the Roosters claimed they never spoke to him and I know the Bulldogs were never interested and Ayoub is the manager of both Milford and Tedesco, they were just waiting for Milford to make his decision to make it official. Also explains why it all happened so fast once the Canberra interest became public.
