Benji Marshall has hit out at factions which tried to drive him out of Wests Tigers and revealed he has a secret get-out clause in his contract allowing him to quit the NRL club should coach Tim Sheens be removed.
>
Speaking on the eve of leading New Zealand into their opening Four Nations clash with Australia in London, Marshall said he was bitterly disappointed to learn there were some sections of the Tigers hierarchy questioning his value to the club.
>
One of those questioning Marshall's productivity was definitely not Sheens, the man Marshall claims has had the biggest influence on his career.
>
So strong is the bond between player and coach that Marshall had a clause inserted in his contract which allows him to leave should Sheens no longer be the coach at the club.
>
"He's my No.1 supporter, he always has been," Marshall said of the man who will be doing his best to stop the Kiwi superstar in his role as Australian coach at the Four Nations.
>
"I've got the utmost respect for him.
>
"I've even got a clause in my contract that says if he's not the coach at the Tigers that I don't have to be there.
>
"That's just the respect that I have for Tim.
>
"The main reason I signed with the club was that I felt I owed the club for the games that I've missed for them - the players in the team I thought I owed and for Tim as well.
>
"I could easily have left but I stayed for those reasons."
>
Which is why Sheens' revelation this week that there were elements in the club that wanted Marshall gone hurt so much.
>
Marshall earlier this year turned down massive offers to switch codes and play rugby union in Japan or Europe to stay loyal to the Tigers, re-signing with the club through to the end of 2011.
>
He has vowed to throw egg in their face of those doubting his value to the Tigers, those doubts surfacing as a result of the 24-year-old's injury troubles in recent seasons and his struggles following a move to halfback earlier this year.
>
But as Sheens is quick to point out, Marshall missed only one game in 2009, and his brilliant form over the back half of the season when restored to the No.6 jumper fell just short of lifting the Tigers into the finals.
>
Asked if he knew there had been rumblings from some quarters for him to be let go, Marshall said: "I didn't. I was pretty disappointed when I got told that this morning - I only found out from my manager.
>
"I'm not going to make any rash comments or make any knee-jerk reactions until I speak to Tim about it, but at the end of the day I put everything aside to re-sign with the club and gave my loyalty back to the club because of what they've done for me.
>
"To hear some of that stuff after I've re-signed, I would have liked to have known that before I re-signed.
>
"I can't do anything about it now. I'm happy with the season I had at the club and the coach was happy with my season and that's all that matters.
>
"They can say what they like but the next couple of years I think are going to be some of my best so they might want to change some of their opinions over the next couple of years."

We wouldnt want to have a bad season next year, not only would Sheens be under pressure but if he goes I think Benji will too.

Yep…While I haven't agreed with alot of Sheen's decisions over the past few years, I have always sweated a bit when Sheen's contract comes up for renewal. Marshall has always said that he'd go if Sheens did. It would be catastrophic if the Tigers lost Marshall imo.

Good work stirring it up NOW Sheens.

Motive = he wants to unsettle the Kiwi captain on the verge of a big game.

End result = he screws things up for the Tigers.

This is why a CLUB coach should NOT BE A NATIONAL COACH.

Why would Benji leave! all talk …..If a well credentialed coach was appointed and he is happy why would he.
Please spare us IF THE COACH LEAVES I LEAVE ..maybe Coach 0 and 4 might after all these years finally steer this team to a near Premiership in 2010.I'm thinking someone is under the pump.

Finally steer this team to a near premiership? He steered it to a premiership already, you goose.

As far as Sheens coming out and saying what he did. Good on him. These inept halfwits from a certain "faction" have wanted to make decisions which would've put this club in a hell of a lot worse spot than we are at the moment, they deserve to have some heat on them.

Wanting to punt Marshall? My god that lot have no f'n clue.

So we only really added one year to Benji's contract in reality.

This is discracful that Sheens has bought it up.

sorry if this is already posted.

i was reading an article on nrl.com regarding the anti-marshall factions.
he stated that in his contract it states that if sheens is not the coach of the tigers that marshall can walk.
this being the case i pray that tim stays on.!

this is a disgraceful by sheens.

what did he seriously hope to gain from it?!?

I suspect the tele new already and they warned they'd go public with it. If that being the case then at least Sheens can put his own spin on it. Very much doubt Sheens would've gone public with it on his own accord. That would be suicide.

All Sheen's words have done have likely just fired Benji up even more now….Come on Kiwis! :stuck_out_tongue:

This will not be good for the club, will cause division withing the two JV sides and can cause division amongst the team.
If Marshall wants to follow a coach that cannot make the semis….then let him go.
Are they now a package deal?
That would restrict BOTH their options.
Dumb statements by all concerned.
The factions have a right to their opinions...they kept it among themselves, until someone shot off his big mouth.

Agreed! This is a terrible situation to be put in. I'm glad it's off season because if this happened during the season, geez i'd hate to see our performances. Benji's clearly been let down here and this places huge pressure on the club when it comes to his next contract. For the men who were part of this "faction", they're entitled to their opinions but come 2011, they may just get their wish.

Regardless of whether the factions are entitled to their opinion, having that opinion was and is idiotic. If they thought it would be a good idea to get rid of our marquee player, who had a pretty good 2008 anyway, than they are imbeciles who have no business being in any position of power…..then again this faction has had alot of idiotic ideas, Lamb as coach, trying to make Langmack and then Dorahy our coach, so hopefuly it's only a matter of time until someone takes the loaded gun from the lunatic so to speak.

I think it was a good idea to come out with it. He would've spoken to Marshall about it before he went public, but I think he came out and said it to show just how idiotic some elements of our club are.

Can you really listen to the opinion of someone if they've tried to do something as brain dead as sacking Marshall?

We have no choice, we are a Joint Venture.
There will forever be two sides.
Might be a stupid opinion, at least it _was_ kept quiet.
