BENJI Marshall has turned to former Socceroos great Graham Arnold to help tweak his kicking game in the likelihood Saturday's grand final qualifier against the Dragons will go down to the wire.

Wests Tigers superstar Marshall arrived at Concord Oval on his day off and spent 45 minutes this afternoon with soccer great Arnold.

Arnold's A League outfit Central Coast Mariners have the bye this weekend and he was only too happy to travel down the F3 Freeway and point out a few tips, including how to improve striking the ball.

The pair have been in touch in recent months, but it is believed this is the first time the pair worked together.

Marshall's kicking has come a long in leaps and bounds towards the back end of the season and his right boot will need to be on target against the Dragons at ANZ Stadium.

all i meant was for a slow wests tigers news day other than hearing payto is out, it was good to see tele get out of their chairs and do some investigating. plus i like seeing as much video as i can cos i cant get down to sydney and go to open training sessions and games etc , wish i lived in sydney :frowning:

he man who once guided the fortunes of Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka has been called upon to assist Benji Marshall in the lead-up to tomorrow night's preliminary final against the Dragons.

Aware that the ANZ Stadium encounter could come down to the most slender of margins, Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens this week enlisted the help of Graham Arnold, the former Socceroos coach now in charge of the Central Coast Mariners, to ensure Marshall is striking his goal kicks well enough to help his side claim a place in the NRL grand final.

Marshall's goalkicking was the subject of scrutiny late in the regular season - notably after a one-from-six effort against the Cowboys in round 19 - and the Herald has been told that the five-eighth travelled to the Central Coast for a session with Arnold about seven weeks ago. He has been kicking at almost 80 per cent since.

Marshall has worked with Arnold on and off since 2003, and generally calls on him if he has ''the yips''. But Sheens decided to phone Arnold this week - even though the playmaker booted five from five attempts against Canberra last Friday night.

So on a day off from scheduled training yesterday, Marshall spent 45 minutes with Arnold at the team's base, Concord Oval. While Marshall was tight-lipped afterwards, Arnold said: ''He kicked them as well as he landed them last week.''

Sheens will be hoping for similar accuracy under match conditions against the Dragons, but he also urged Marshall to step up a gear - even though the playmaker has been arguably in career-best form - elsewhere on the paddock against the Dragons.

''With guys like Todd [Payten] out and a few senior guys out, I'd expect Benj and Robbie Farah in particular to step right up,'' Sheens said. ''He [Marshall] is well prepared, he's playing good football - so is Rob - and they'll be our linchpins, they'll be the two key players. If they step up, we've got enough firepower to put points on them, and then it'll come down to penalties, bounce of the ball, and how tough we are at the back-end of each half, to win the game.'' And maybe, just maybe, a kick at goal.

Benji Marshall kicks Jason Taylor off the job

BENJI Marshall is using Graham Arnold as his personal goalkicking coach? What happened to Jason Taylor?

In February this year, it was revealed amid much fanfare that one of the best kickers in the business ever had been enlisted by Marshall to improve his ability of finding the highly sought after black dot.

Clearly, Taylor's services are no longer required if the images of the freaky Wests Tigers playmaker kicking under the watchful eye of the former Socceroos coach at Concord Oval on Thursday are anything to go by.

Taylor informed us yesterday that he last helped Marshall before round 22 this year. As reported yesterday, Marshall had secretly driven up to the Central Coast around the same time for his first session with Arnold.

Was Benji two-timing? Who can say?

"I haven't done anything with Benji since then," Taylor said.

"He kept going along with himself and then started with Graham Arnold, who has coached him for years before. If you want to say that's a case of me being punted, you can."

Maybe it is but that's not to say Taylor has no clue what he's talking about. This week, he worked with his other client, Todd Carney, and the Roosters five-eighth has been kicking them from all over the place all season.

"It is probably a good lesson for me," Taylor continued. "You need to start with a kicker during the off-season, as I did with Todd. When you start during the season it is difficult to make adjustments as you're going along."

Marshall was apparently angry at the media presence during his so-called secret session with Arnold.

He might want a word to his media department, who had scheduled a press conference at Concord Oval with injured forward Todd Payten around the same time. Oops.
