Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

this club has been lying to us for years to get us to buy memberships…if you email them they never respond but as members we desrve better.

Well it's a done deal - the club has confirmed we've let him go effective immediately. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

This is bad news. I don't understand why we have done this.

We need to start playing this game a lot better.

Weak to just let him go and get nothing in return. Management have to show more balls. Other clubs do it all the time, yet we always roll over whenever another club comes calling! Pathetic.

Seriously, when was the last time we denied a player a release?? We're always thinking about the players and not ourselves. Most clubs work the other way around.

People are showing disgust from Taupau, but why are we not looking at why he even wants to leave? Say money, but really the offer from Manly isn't going to be much more than what we could offer for 2017 onwards (when our cap is much cleaner). We have to be seriously worried about why someone like Taupau, who owes a lot to the Tigers for giving him the opportunity to break through, would want to leave with the potential shown in our key players. I'm very worried about the impact Taylor is having on players wanting to stay at the club, next thing Brooks & Moses will want out, and all the investment we've made in our future will have been destroyed.

May not be Taylor, might be Robbie staying.

Why would a club want a current origin player and a legend of the club to leave …some here have to really step back and have a hard think about it ..it is starting to unravel!

Wests Tigers have today confirmed that the Club has released Martin Taupau from the final year of his playing contract.

Taupau has played 45 games for Wests Tigers over the past two years and will depart ahead of the 2016 season.

Media reports this morning detailed a confidential email regarding Taupau’s contract with his new Club, this correspondence was not from Wests Tigers.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said that the decision to release Taupau was made after much debate.

“While it’s disappointing for our Members and fans to see Taupau leave the Club he had made it clear that he intended on playing elsewhere from 2017 onwards,” said Pascoe. “Earlier this year the Club was negotiating with Taupau to extend his stay at Wests Tigers. We put on the table what we believed was a fair offer but ultimately he has decided to continue his playing career elsewhere.

“The decision to release Taupau early not only improves the Club’s salary cap position but as a consequence will also help to secure some of the young talent already with the Club.

“The negotiations regarding releasing Taupau have been going on over the last week and our organisation has been doing everything possible to be respectful to Taupau, our Members and fans as this is a sensitive issue for all,” said Pascoe. “To see all of that work being undone and for the story to come out in this way is disappointing and almost comical.”

Wests Tigers Head Coach Jason Taylor said that the Club has players to replace Taupau.

“We’re confident that our roster, including a number of new recruits, will lead this Club well next season,” said Taylor. “The Club has been working hard to improve depth across every position and we have players ready to step up.

“We return to pre-season training next week and all of the players are keen to get back onto the field and prepare for next season,” he said.

Agree.
The statement posted above would suggest we're not getting anything in return, nor using the space to seek replacement(s).
WT are a weak club.

Pascoe's kidding himself isn't he? We're hardly the club that can be having a crack at others about embarassing contract negotiations and them being revealed.

The new CEO is just like the rest before him all talk no action ..bid ideas on paper the first test comes and is weak as water ,one day this club will have a leader that will assert themselves and mean business what a poor performance .

sorry jason we havent got the players to replace taupau…he is an international forward who gave to australia a few months ago.he was our best forward until he asked farah to approach taylor about our style of play.after that you could tell he wanted out and his form fell away....i am done with this club

What's done is done , we now move on and players who thought Martin was in front of them for a spot are going to be more keen, I think it will make them even more competative , as for Manly they usually get who they want because they are grubs and don't care what people think , a lesson our mob should take on board , and we should be getting compensated , I would have asked for his whole years salary as we seem to always pay player to play at other clubs

I knew he would be going but can't believe they've released him early for nothing in return. So disappointing. You can chalk this one up to the Jason Taylor factor. Worst thing is I think this is only the beginning

Well I'm pretty sure you can chalk it up to Money….

At least I can finally ditch my Marty Avatar in the Trash...

Taupau would have ditched us for Manly after next year anyway but I still can't see any real benefit to our club letting him go a year early apart from Pascoe's vague reference to possible salary cap savings. Didn't we pick him up for not much money as a Dogs lower grade forward who couldn't get any first grade time at his then club? Couldn't have been on big money you would think!

I thought I would be more upset by this news, but I am not. If someone doesn't want to play for the tigers then why make them. Surely you don't get the best out of an individual when you force them to do something they don't want to.

Marzie, I don't know if it is only the beginning but who could argue if it is. We came second last and can hardly even challenge for the 8\. We are obviously clearing the decks and my reaction to that is great because what we have done for a long time hasn't worked. Lets just weed out the people that don't want to be here and get on with it.
