Teams were starting to figure him out this season as well. Get up on him quickly so as he cant get any momentum and go low around the legs. It made him pretty ineffective

Totally agree.

Not saying Taupau cannot adjust his technique, but he started to get a bit of Fifita about him, when teams would swarm and he'd be looking for a fend rather than just making the yards.

That being said, 1-1 he's near impossible to stop… slow him down perhaps, but not stop cold. I always thought we should have used Marty a lot more on the kickoff returns, rather than lumberers like KG and Ava.

i call BS. Also Ava is no lumberer.
im absolutely gutted he has been let go and tbh, whether or not it is actually his fault or not, i now just want Taylor gone and replaced with Cleary (i rate him very highly and always have).

Big Marty going was for me the last straw. a guy i used to work with likened supporting the tigers to watching Game of Thrones: dont get too attached to the characters, because theres a good chance theyll be gone soon.

i guess maybe its because i really really liked him being with us.

and now, as seems with any player who comes or goes, parochialism is at the fore. "he became way less effective when other teams worked him out" etc.

this is only ever said to placate someone who is actually upset he has gone; how could any club supporter be happy marty taupau has left them?!!!

im not. im… upset.

to add fuel to the fire, if moses doesn't come on this season like i think he will, i will have no leg to stand on with my old man - whats worse than that?!!!!!

I didn't wait until he was gone to say he isn't as good as most think. I said it when he got suspended last year. I was happy he was suspended and we went on to win the next 2 games. 3rd game was a horrible loss though.

He's a loss, but not as big a loss as opposition fans believe. To get out of this hole we need players that will get down and dirty for the entire time they are on the field, I don't believe Taupau is a player like that.

Watch Manly turn him into a player like that. :frowning:

I will miss his occasional good run as well Turnstyle, but not at the money he wanted and as his actions didnt match his mouthed nor social media statements, well bye bye.

He is good impact attacking player because of a fantastic right arm fend, but like KS, my thoughts of him being more hype than substance because of fair deficiencies are on here way before he decided to get out.

In a very strong pack and used purely as a impact player he would be a match winner. Manly may be able to direct a big chunk of cash at a bench impact player, but we needed that sort money being directed at big minute players.

I get the feeling he will do very well at Manly, they play a very physical brand of football in the forwards and are not known for their discipline. That should suit Marty down to the ground, but as for us, he would have been very handy, but for the cap space he would have taken up he would have been a luxury and not necessity

Probably one of the most sensible comments i have seen on our forum in years

Nice Bump this one..

FTR…I DON"T love him anymore...he is dead to me..

Luckily there is a boy named SUE..

In a few years Tapau's contract will be the norm. Manly have done an excellent job recruiting and while some of it is pretty suspect, they've read the game well.

Getting Ballin in exchange is a good deal for us though. His impact off the field seems apparent already.

I don't know about Marty at Manly, I still feel they are a bit unbalanced in the forwards.

They are likely to start with Myles and Trbojevic, with Lawrence (if fit) and Lussick in the prop rotation. Starling plays NSW Cup to start. The rest of their pack is made of mobile little guys like Buhrer and Brown. Tom Symonds is around too as is Feleti Mateo, but they are primary wide attackers.

In my opinion Myles is very solid, Trbojevic is non-dynamic in attack but has great defence and decent minutes. Lawrence is not currently reliable in terms of recent injuries and I think Lussick struggled at Parra, so he's going to have to turn it around big time.

Can Marty just have an enforcer role in this pack? I don't think so, I think Manly need some dirty work and minutes out of him, and I think that will detract from his dynamism.

I still think Marty is at his best first-change off the bench, because he becomes expended fast in the opening exchanges, whereas on the bench he's more like a dog wanting to get off the leash. Nothing better than sending Taupau out when the opposition is starting to tire and makes their first subs, to bring his athleticism into play. Clearly he wants to start matches, but I feel all his best performances have been off the bench. You send out Keith Galloway-types for a reason, same as in cricket you don't always send out your flashiest batsman to open.

To send Marty out as starting prop would have him blunted by fresh defence, or to send him out as starting lock means he just hovers around the field hoping for the football.

Who in the Manly pack is going to take the tough hitups, make the yards in traffic? Myles and…? I think they lack large workhorses. Not to say Tigers are better, but Manly seem to have stacked their forward pack either into very small/mobile or very big amblers.

I've noticed whenever you seem to get attached to a player they tend to leave. You're 2 from 2 by my count (Heigno and Marty) things usually happen in 3's. And Sue is off contract this yr 😕

Yeah Mama
Used better I think he will get to be a bigger threat to teams than ever. He's still young and as previously said needs to be hitting the opposition at full steam, and getting wound up on kick returns is ideal for him, getting the ball in traffic is a waste of his ability..
I'll be surprised if he isn't used better this season. I hope he kills it( except against us)
Unfortunately he will probably save a bit extra for us.

Unfortunately he will probably save a bit extra for us.

If so then its the right move

we need players giving everything every week

Maybe the bit extra (if it eventuates) will come from being used differently in games
And maybe better training. Well all know soon enough

Correct

Tapau was over hyped for mine. Don't get me wrong he could be a beast however he was poor plenty of weeks last season.

A front foot player.

When your dominating he is a world beater. When your losing the battle he can go missing.

I think it was clear in his mind he was going by mid season.

He stopped putting in, as he had been, as if he were pissed at something.

Not enough minutes? Coming off the bench? Taylor?

Who knows. But he did let us down given his opprtunity to shine by not putting in 100% 24/24.

If Grant/Edwards/Sue etc put in 100% for the club 24/24 or more, at least, that'll go a long way to making up for a lack of kapow.

Taupau will struggle with the extra minutes IMO. He has a big frame and on a few occasions for us he was over on his haunches blowing pretty hard after little involvement.

That's not me sticking the boot in because he's gone etc, when he is on he is a fantastic player but unless Manly can extract more minutes out of him and get him to lead the pack even when they're being dominated I don't think he's a value for money signing which is why I am not too upset that he has moved on.

Manly will likely get the extra out of him, they're good for that and we have a history of players not putting in for us. If he does go to new levels at Manly, I think it says a bit more about us rather than them.

Very hard to keep running in and ripping and tearing when your fellow forwards are not even getting to the advantage line. You can do it for a while but by mid season you start to think this is to hard.

Although he tended to be either right up for a game or uninterested, but he is not on his own in that department

Watching him on Nine News being interviewed at the Sea Eagles season launch made me sick. I'm still not happy he was let go…i know, i know all the arguments. Still it doesn't sit well with me.
