Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

Surely we will be in a position to offer him the coin he wants for 2017 especially if High Rise Harry comes across with a TPA to top it up.
Marty seams happy enough at the club and hopefully with a couple more good signings for 2017 it will lead to us being more successful on the field . Ultimately it will come down to cash v being a club playing finals football.
Have read several threads stating the good Burgi is going back to the rabbits. Hopefully they won't chase Marty too hard if this is the case.

If Harry is going to own a share or all of WTs. Doesn't that preclude him from having anything to do with TPA's ?

So for the front of the jersey Harry paid 600k (excluding finals bonuses), but now people think that he is going to stump up for big third party deals… Hmmmm

Just about every club in the NRL will chase him. The Warriors are keen and I would imagine if Taylor stays we will have difficulty retaining him.

I think if Taylor stays we will have difficulty retaining all of our players

Did you see the bit in the sunday tele about how Taylor wasn't invited to mad monday, and the players sang songs about Taylor, not complementary ones either, says it all really, JT has to go.

Yeah, couldn't wait to disrespect the coach after the footy season, disrespected Potter after he tried his best with what he had as well as having his hands tied and a mid season review, got rid of Sheens after he had won a premiership and clean the joint out so we could move ahead…..yeah the playing group certainly have a lot of respect for the jersey and club that pays their salary, the coach is also paid by the club who selected him as head coach,to not even give him a chance to put his plans in place is pretty ordinary by a lot of the fans, but to be disrespected by a group who a mojority of aren't even NRL standard, that is extremely ordinary.....they remind me of the band....The Pretenders..well at least they had some hits ....maybe HT can by them a karaoke machine to put in the new kitchen......

Playing Group who have zero respect … it is a massive problem with the playing group...boys Club continues on and grows bigger it seems...

People wonder why the Club wants a culture change...go figure...

I agree, I do find it funny that a coach starts making tough decisions on recruitment to alter the playing culture and get more performances out of his players.

When the players start getting annoyed, some supporters think this is evidence that the coach is not doing his job, that being mates with the players is the primary goal.

In some ways, the more uncomfortable the players react, the more I think the coach is doing the right thing. Nobody in this team should be comfortable of his position, think that he is irreplaceable, think the team won't go on without him. That sort of complacency leads to laziness.

From what I have seen of the Rabbits in the past month you would be in no hurry to get there. They have a roster on the decline, every club goes through it and winning the comp really puts pressure on your salary cap and they are now feeling the effects. Okay injuries and suspensions have not helped their cause but with Farah or without Farah we have a team on the rise and they have one on the decline and I would think their is a fair chance we might pass each other next year with us going up the pile and them going down

Just watch the Taylor haters have another fit when he continues to clean out the crap from our roster.

There is no doubt that there are more to go.

Most teams (those that abide by the salary cap) have their ups and down over the years. Some teams take a bit longer to hit their incline than others but I really believe that the Wests Tigers have already begun their incline. Souths on the other hand are beginning their decline.

You can't properly judge a house when it's half-finished, right?

Its funny everyone on this forum wants our team to become a dominant force in the NRL, but they want to keep the majority of the team that has under achieved but are happy to change the coach every year. I do not get it….Not saying Taylor is the answer but at least give him a chance, lets face it with our salary cap being in a shambles he has had one hand tied behind his back and next year will not be a lot easier

Geez TT - how long do you think Sheens deserved to stay at the club before he had to be accountable himself for the results he achieved? He left the the club with a 51% success rate after nine years! He said himself that if the team did not make the finals in 2012 he would resign - well that decision was taken away from him from the board, and in hindsight they probably should have let him go when he got the big offer from Penrith. I will never bag Tim Sheens for obvious reasons, but to suggest he wasnt largely responsible for his own demise, really? Since 2011 we have been offloading players and paying some to play elsewhere - five appeared in the finals this weekend past - and I can think of fifteen that we have offloaded including Galloway and Farah assuming he is gone - and only Ayshford and Masila have not been able to consistently play in firstgrade at other teams. All very well to support this clean out campaign and blame players past and present for the culture at the club - but if you cant replace them with something as good as, or better then we are on a hiding to no where. Im not sure how long a clean out is supposed to take but since 2011 when coaches and management started on this path we have appeared in the finals not once and based on our depth for next year if Taylor can get this side anywhere near playing finals football well I will be the first to say I was totally wrong about him. But based on some of the decisions made this year and in particular recent events, next year looks like another long one for Wests Tigers fans.

yep that's pretty much me.

i dont think JT is the answer either but i like what he's doing for now. i dont think he'll be re-signed after his 3 years.

Too early to say. If he makes some strong signings going into 2017 and our squad is looking good, and we make the 8, why not?

Ftr, i didn't support his style this yr, it was totally unnecessary imo. But i support him in getting the squad he wants, and he probably won't be able to fully get it till 2017.

Telltails, yes you do make some valid arguements,I may have been a little cynical in my post, however, every time that there is some form of drama or instability within our club, then it usually points to specific people,,eg,the playing group disrespecting the coach,CEO who backended contracts without the thought of the repercussions of that act,the we have and you haven't of the old factional board(we against them scenario),the Whiteanting of Potter and the mid season review….So what I'm saying, until all this garbage has a stop put to it,then we will not progress as a proffesionally run club or team...This new board and Taylor should be given at least the next two years to put us back on the competitive track and playing finals footy as well as organise the financial standing of the club in regards to cap and money owing to whoever is owed it..whatever happens to Farah will happen and eventually it will come to head, either good or bad....cheers mate....

As much as I like Martin Tapau, he will not be the 'reason' the Tigers climb to the top of the table anytime soon. He's an 'impact' player, not a dominant player.

The Tigers would be a little foolish to invest too heavily into him. Not saying he's a player we shouldn't re-sign, or shouldn't try to keep, but he's no Aaron Woods for example.

For mine Tapau is a very good complimentary type player. Really good teams have guys like Tapau play as a bit of a shock weapon.

This team could really do with another Gareth Ellis type second rower to mix with Sironen (Lock) & Lawrence.

Agreed, his best games have been for the Kiwis (short stints off the bench) or games where we have given oppositions a towelling.

He's like Ben Te'o or Adam Blair, great to have around when your team is doing well, necessary to be a Top 4 team, but not the bloke who's going to do all the dirty hitups or produce a match-winning play when you are struggling at the bottom of the table.

So you keep Taupau around if possible, but he's not going to be the foundation of a champion side.

I'm with magpiecol, I can't believe how negative things are in here
We need the stats guy jbskyr(?) who lets the facts speak to give us a breakdown on the posts based on 1\. Positive 2\. Hopeful 3\. Neutral 4\. Negative 5\. Feral
I'm guessing it will be well under Neutral
Jason Taylor is a year in, let's see how next year pans out, I can't believe all the haters for him, bring back Alan Jones for that lot, then they'll know real pain
Any signings or rumoured, just remember we aren't flush and gave to go for value/risky options, they aren't going to be the obvious guns, we can't get those
In terms of who we haven't resigned, mostly they aren't rock stars, they have their moments good and bad, I'll back JT and decide again beyond 2016 mid season

Hi Col, welcome back. Let's get some more stats happening. We can prove again with the stats that we've had a great year! Can they also prove JT is a swell guy? He needs a bit of a makeover right now. Aloha.
