Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

He is not even worth more than 500k let him go.

650k is more than Tedesco is on, with that sort of money we could sign Bromwich, Moa or JWH and they are better players. Hell even Simon Mannerings stats for this season are better than Taupaus, yes he will go on and be a better player at another club like usual but we can't sign him on money that he isn't worth.

There are so many current NRL players who have a very inflated opinion of their worth. There are also so many young talented and very capable players who are happy to play NRL for a reasonable purse.

And a lot of them are in for a rude shock if they think they're all gonna make it in the NFL. Josh Dugan wants to go over now. He's no chance.

Said it a million times, its all about supply and demand. So while you have clubs willing to beat your price, his asking price will continue to climb. The trick for us is setting a price that we can afford in relation with our salary cap and the other tier one contracts and sticking to it. Because every time we go over this figure its less dollars we can offer another player. Of course he is good for our brand name and is a very good marketing tool but we need players who give you the same high standard week in and week out and big Marty tends to be all over the shop, ranging from terrible to brilliant

And he should not be in the run on side, off the bench he made the best impact , he was given a starting spot and has now knocked back a serious amount of money to stay, let him go, he won't fit in to the new interchange with his level of aerobic fitness

Taupau is a dinosaur ,over blown muscle behemoth . Days are over for these types in the changing game, the need is for strong aerobic athletes that can give you 60 mins not someone that lifts huge weights and is gased after 10 mins . Would not offer overs if team Taupau wants more he should give Dessie a ring just do not hold your breath.

I love Marty but I would definitely not offer him overs. Offer him a fair salary and if he goes so be it.

You're joking, right? If anything, Marty will be better off under the new rules. Teams will (presumably) be getting smaller, and having an athlete like him could be game changing. I'd like to see him back to the bench or as part of our prop rotation, but he will be an absolute weapon next season.
Not to mention literally every forward in the game will be doing extras with the S&C team this pre-season to get up to speed for the changes.

Not overly worried about these recent stories - just his agent getting his name out there in public as a negotiating tool.
If he genuinely didn't want to stay, he'd have not even entered into contract talks with us.
I reckon we'll get something sorted with him in the next few weeks.

Another person who sees it for what it is….Hallelujah

Marty is a good player and worth hanging onto-provided we can do so at a fair price. Our offer for another 2 years ($1.1 million) is both fair and reasonable. That said, every player has to look after himself financially and I'll be wishing him well if he takes up a better offer elsewhere

He must not like it here with the tigers.
I'm starting to dislike him as a person.

Is there a particular reason for that,? Or has he actually done something to deserve it?

Just appears he is showing his true colours.
Knocking back big money, shopping himself around supposedly.
Without being too harsh - we (the tigers) have made him who he is today.

If it wasn't for us, he'd be in NSW cup at the doggies, doing nothing.

I agree, there's a little bit of the Ben Teo vibe about him, though he doesn't seem as shameless as Teo. If the offer we made him is legit, then it was very generous and you wonder what stopped him from accepting. He'll regret it if he comes out in the first couple weeks and gets a Simon Dwyer or Tuiaki kind of injury and never plays again. It might be far fetched, but don't think it can never happen. That's why you take the money while you can. Atm, he's one serious injury away from having nothing to show financially for the impact he's made the last 2 seasons.

He might already have a deal for 2017
You can't blame any player for getting the best deal he possibly can. Clubs will dump you at the drop,of a hat if they want to.

I do laugh at the sudden influx of NRL players feeling they could give the NFL a go.

Hayne was an 'elite' level NRL player, and he's just made it onto the 53 man squad of a pretty poor team. As a returner (and occasional RB- must be said, that's above expectation).

Now Dugan, Tapau etc think they can make the switch? They are neither 'elite' talents, or very athletic.

It'll be the worlds biggest slap in the face if either of these 2 think they are NFL level.

I still haven't seen where Marty has sought a release - I reckon this is a lot of off-season you know what!!

He hasn't mate…that's why....

I'm hearing from a very reliable source that big Marti has signed with the Canberra Raiders on a 2 year deal.

I'm told that the offer from Canberra was too good to refuse and the opportunity to be apart of the raiders team who are building towards success really quickly was also a major factor.

This is a huge loss for us if true and just another big blow. Losing the dally m 5/8 of the year to the raiders was bad enough, now taupau too who is going to be one of the best props in the Comp in a year or 2??? :brick: :rant

Really got to give credit where it's due though, the raiders are putting together a really, really good team at the moment and will push for top 4 as early as next year. Ricky is building something very special at that club.

My source is my brother who knows someone really high up at the club.

Hearing 2016, Joel Edwards to tigers was some sort of compensation, yes not a superstar signing but a very handy player to have in the team.
