I don't think his 1st grade material at the moment ,very lazy always huffing and puffing and gives away alot of penalties. Even if he went well tonight, you can't compare under 20's to 1st grade level , (intensity) is a world apart. How Sheens let go of Gibbs at the expense of keeping Groat is brain dead in my opinion. This club needs change in coach, but thats another topic.

I agree with most comments went well in defense and ok hitting it up also was very impressed with some of the other props in the NSW side.
I probably even agree he may not be ready for FG but has enormous potential and with experience could be a great clubman .

I just get sick of the continual bagging this kid cops when it is almost unheard of for a prop his age to be playing regular FG

I thought he did not to bad needs a bigger longer lasting motor . Maybe he was still feeling the hit from the other week really needs an old head like blocker or skando to have chat with him to get his confidence up and a few pointers cause I can see he has potential . The hard part is everyone is comparing him with woods and I think it's unfair woods could be an excellent back rower for the future

Groat could use some time in State Cup.

Probably a fw weeks in NYC to get his confidence back after being on a hiding to nothing in the NRL squad.

Confident he has a big future with us though

Lucky Brett Hodgson only made that one mistake to lose NSW a SoO game. If he'd made another one in that game he would have been (quite rightly) dropped, never to play again. As he only made 1 mistake he was only half useless right?

Yeah I agree. But he positions himself poorly in defence, avoiding from diving to make a must stop tackle, finds it hard to put forwards down and misses loads of tackles. He may come good, he's only young and I think he went ok last night. Tbh I don't see a future. I must admit having Woods there gives you someone to compare him to. Best of luck anyway, while you wear our jumper.

Some of the pathetic bagging this KID gets on here is a disgrace.
He may struggle at the moment against some but bloody hell he could be anything with a bit of support and patience.

Under 20s is not First Grade and we need a FG Prop NOW not in 3-5 years. I hope he develops into a great player and I dont question his commitment. As a starting prop he just does not cut it and even as a bench player I have my doubts. IMO he's too small to mix it with the big boys and go charging into the line like he did when he got KOd. hope he proves me wrong, though.

Dont need to watch under 20's game to judge him . under 20's and 1st grade is a massive difference, have seen enough of him in 1st grade and for me hasn't got it. Compare him to Aaron Woods and you will answer your own question. Groat needs time in reserves don't hate the kid but is plain to see imo!!!

All I've read for weeks is sheens is an idiot coach who couldn't spot a talent if he fell over it and losing Gibbs to lock in both Groat and Woods was the dumbest decision in the history of footy. Rest assured we couldn't keep those two young forwards and match cronulla for Givbs. Well I'm pretty comfortable with that decision. Both are rep players theyre tough and hard and they're just kids. Gibbs played brilliantly in the latter half of last year but is he worth what cronulla payed? Is he a long term option with that knee? Is he worth losing Woods and Groat? Is he a better player than Blair? No on all counts. Gibbs is a solid footy player, not worth paying overs for, which is what he got at cronulla. Those three young forwards will win us a grand final.

I cant believe some posters on here are saying Groat played poorly, defended very well and had excellent work rate. Took the ball forward well in a game full of the best players of the age group.

I think Groat is ready for first grade, but not for the amount of minutes he had to play early in the year. His first stint has been pretty good in almost every game. His second stint he gets found out a little bit. Probably why we fell away in the second half in alot of those early games.

Groat is only going to get better. We can't throw him under a bus because he isn't playing as good as someone with 5 years of 1st grade under the belt, or as good as Woods (who is a freak).

As a bench prop, he offers plenty with enough potential to warrant continued selection.

Hes a big boy who was more than holding his own against the under 20s , steps into first grade and is getting belted by smaller guys around 25 years old (as an example ) who are more physically developed … Id like to see the old sydtem with first grade , reserve grade then president cup or even raise the age of toyota cup to 23 maybe ? cant see much changing though 😕

Problem with that theory is that woods, murdoch and dwyer all came out of the same comp and had an immediate impact.

Groat is a good player who has a lot of potential. Size and speed will mean he is going to be having an impact soon. Calling for him to be dropped is very short-sighted (something this forum is great at).

You really believe dwyer had an imediate impact when he played first grade in 09 ? and murdoch masila made an imediate impact in 2010 ? masila has come good this year 2 years after his debut..dwyer came good 1 year after his debut..Groat played mid season last year due to injuries and players signing with other clubs and probablt wasnt ready.. woods i must admit is one of the few forwards that have come straight from toyota cup to have a pretty decent start last year and show massive potential this year.

I feel for Matt. He is doing as his coach is asking, but his coach is expecting unrealistic things from him. The kid is not even 20 yet, and shouldn't be playing beyond 25-30 mins a game off the bench. Instead, because Sheens came into the season light on front rowers, Groat is trying to meet the extra demands of starting and playing more minutes than what he is accustomed to.

I don't doubt that kid gives 100% for the jersey when he steps on to the paddock. He has plenty of promise and will continue to grow. He should either be in State Cup for a month or two and should be getting flogged at training to increase his motor a little and when he returns he should come back a better player.

That said, if he is handed a FG jersey, I'm sure he will give it his all and won't pike it (like a certain halfback did.) Sheens has always been a fairly good identifier of talent and Groat will pay dividends, hopefully it's in our colours.

Couldn't agree with you more Max … The only reason it is, is because of the ineptitude of the State Cup ... Or the lack of a decent over age competition. Let's hope that's rectified by the new Commission that is meant to address all these issues. I even found myself agreeing with Chris Anderson the other day that the State Cup is not much more than Park football .... I don't think Matty Groat would benefit much from playing down there.
