Matt McIlwrick

Competition can be healthy, it brings the best out in players especially two young and very talented players. Defence is a skill which can be learnt and little doubt Shane F will have the tackling bags out with Cherrington but will reap the rewards.

Yeah but you'll still only get to keep one for any length of time even if it did play out that way. If they were both going well then another club would just swoop in and offer one or the other a guaranteed spot for 60+ minutes a game and they'd be gone. They needed to choose and they might as well have made the choice now, I don't think it's a howler of a decision. It might end up being a terrible decision in hindsight but oh well…

If you do not have your defensive technique sorted by the time you finish 20's, you will never be much o a defender. You may miss the odd tackle, but your technique needs to be set. That is what worries me about our halves and backrowers

Good solid player. Sizeable lad 6'0 and 95 Kgs and can fill a Rory Kostjayson role before Liddle comes on.
I like the signing and I hope we sign Ballin as a trainer and he retires.

I think you'd find alot of clubs with no confirmation on particular positions and 2 players battling it out for said position through the year tend to struggle.
I remember when brisbane signed prince to 'compliment' their halves. Happened with souths this year when not naming a defined dummy half.
Liddle is a future NRL career hooker.
McWill Rick is a NSW cup career hooker with first grade experience.
At the right price a decent pick up to compliment the team and Liddle, can also play lock when required.
Of course his a contingency plan if Ballin does not regain full fitness.

Sharks also have Jayden Brailey (terrible name) at hooker in the NYC who is very highly rated, Australian Schoolboy and included in the NYC 2016 team of the year.

This has been rumoured for about 2 months now. He was one of the obvious options at hooker for us to look at.

We need to sign a nsw cup hooker plain and simple. Someone cheap, who can step up if Ballin is out, but otherwise someone who's happy enough to play nsw cup for most of the season.

He'd be a very decent option for us.

Wouldn't it have been preferable for our club to have two young and very talented hookers battling it out for the NRL Guernsey? By that I mean Cherrington and Liddle. Also, it seems at odds to allow Cherrington to leave with our emphasis on developing juniors.

Absolutely not. How many clubs in the NRL have 2 rookie hookers in their side? None. There's no guarantees either will make it and Cherrington has already shown to struggle with defence in the top grade.

Cherrington/Mosely would also be a top tier player, whereas someone like a McIlwrick would be a 2nd tier cap player. If Ballin retires he can move up to top tier, but if not we're not stuck with 3 hookers in our 25.

If Ballin is going to retire in the next month or two then we could aim for a better senior hooker than McIlwrick but otherwise we're not going to find many better 2nd tier hookers going around.

Very average player at best…don't know what was worse, chasing Mortimer or Mcllwrick

Both on about the same rung,IMO
Hope he's willing to play Reggies, as if things continue the way they've gone, they won't drop one of our "Potential "players, unless they set fire to JTs car, or something similar.

Yes that gets funnier the 10,000th time….

McIlwrick wouldn't cost a tonne playing well for Newtown all season very solid defender depth signing with NRL experience..if true..

He can't be too bad. He was named as hooker in the Reserve grade team of the year. JAC and Hunt were also named. Hunt as a reserve.
