New move on scrums

By Christian Nicolussi From: The Daily Telegraph February 03, 2010 12:00AM

NRL footy could become an even greater spectacle if a proposal is adopted at today's NRL coaches' conference.

Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens wants to see defensive lines pushed back 10m during a scrum - not 5m - to give backs a licence to thrill from a set play.

While grounding of the ball and obstruction rules will be discussed among the coaches, NRL referees boss Robert Finch and his panel at ANZ Stadium, Sheens hopes his proposal is warmly received.

"The idea is to basically give the attacking side more room to move," Sheens said.

"By pushing back the defensive line 10m it will only help with getting their sets ready.

"It won't necessarily mean more points are going to be scored off the scrum."

One fan of Sheens' suggestion is Finch, who said pushing a defensive line further back during a scrum would make for "entertaining footy" and be no drama for referees.

Interestingly, Sheens also requested the scrum be fed from both sides, not just the blind side.

There was a stir at last year's conference because of the introduction of the dual-referee system, but there will be no burning issues today.

*** I hope this change comes in. It would do everything Sheens suggests and make a more open game.

sounds good to me too…......

Licence to Thrill..............that was 2 years ago...........Geez I hope the 2008 game plans aren't back.....

Heres hoping this comes in as there are not many teams out there who do better set pieces from a scrum than the Tigers.

I Like it, i think we need to see more attacking football or just players with more room to move, i think every Rugby league fan would like to see that. The game often gets bogged down with meter gain around the ruck and a scrum just seems to be an opportunity to have a breather, so lets turn it into a chance for teams to attack using their outside backs.

Not overly keen on that idea. A 40/20 would almost certainly lead to a try 9/10 times. I think the game is open enough as it is. Bring em closer I say. Maybe they should just ensure the scrum binds properly instead of players in the pack breaking away before the balls even out.

I'd like to see more emphasis on the play the ball. One of my biggest hates. Too many markers are penalised because the ball player walks off the mark or push the marker back before playing it.
I wouldn't mind a change where the 2nd marker can float between the 1st marker and his defensive line. Too many penalties against the markers for not being dead set square. Most times its because the bloke playing the ball has stepped to the side of the mark before paying it….....Billy the sly kid Slater is one of the worst.

Yes he is…he will also occasionally baulk when playing the ball, usually deep in their own area and early in the set- mainly when he's fielded a kick.

I'd think the defense back 10 would be good...Im picturing Benji early in the semi against Saints - ooh yehhh
