Look at the Broncos 20 odd Friday night games, Virtually a home final in the first week then when it becomes 'Home Region' surprise.....Suncorp.....
The AFL one with it's faults seems better....but then again they run their game......
Oh.... I'd be over the moon if we won every game......and very dissapointed if we went out backwards......

The top 2 teams are rewarded. They get home games in week 1 against the 7th and 8th ranked teams and if they lose against them they are guaranteed a second chance. They shouldn't be rewared anymore than that. That's why the final series is so exciting because you have to win every game. If you don't you are out or have to get through the hard way. If Saints lost today and were still guaranteed a home semi next week then they could of just decided to take it easy today. The fans don't want to see that in the finals series. We want to see teams playing every game in the finals like it's life or death. That's why I hate the AFL system.
Perhaps the NRL should follow the ESL with their finals system.

That is an interesting one, so if the 1st place win they can choose whoever they want that finished in the 8 for the grand final qualifier? If thats the case, you'd almost be better off throwing the towel in once you cant make the top 4 so you finish 8th, and then get picked to play in prelim because you're the worst team in finals.

I've come up with a different finals system that I believe is fairer than both the McIntyre System and the one used by the AFL. It's a five-week series and it GUARANTEES that the only way the top two teams can be eliminated BEFORE the grand final is if they lose twice. With the current formats its possible for 1st and 2nd to lose only once (the preliminary finals) and be gone, which is not fair.
Here's the way it would work;
Week one and two are just like the format the AFL uses. That is,
week one
A) 1v4
B) 2v3
C) 5v8
D) 6v7
week two
elimination games, 3v6 and 4v5 if all week one games go according to plan
E) loser A v winner C
F) loser B v winner D
week three
The winners of the 1v4 and 2v3 matchups from week one play each other. The winner automatically goes into the grand final. The winners from week two also play each other in an elimination games.
G) winner A v winner B
H) wiiner E v winner F
week four
I) loser G v winner H
This is like the preliminary final in the old top five format.
week five - GRAND FINAL
J) winner G v winner I
The ONLy draw back to this system is that if teams 1 and 2 BOTH lose in week one they can't play each other in the grand final, as they'll end up playing each other in week three if they make it that far. However, that's better than the current AFL system where all it takes is for one of either team 1 or 2 to lose in week one to make it impossible for them to meet in the grand final.

We have some years where teams 1-4 are so much better than teams 5-8, and people complain about the system because the first week's results are a foregone conclusion and it isn't interesting. This year, team 8 beats team 1 and people are complaining because team 1 now has a hard run to make it to the grand final. If they are good enough, they will make it. If they are not good enough, they are not good enough!

Lockyer made mention at the start of the series that the teams in the top 4 should receive a better advantage and he doesn't like the system... wonder how he feels now?
