McKinnon vs. Brown vs. Moltzen

Ok, so who does everyone want in the fullback position and why? I personally want mitch brown playing at fullback with moltzen in the halves and latu or mullaney or beau or another young gun or even matt utai (depending on how well his off season has been and if he has impressed) playing on the wing. I feel as if brown has the edge over mckinnon in every aspect of the fullback position except support play. Thoughts?

I like Mitch Brown. His quick, gets into good positions and runs hard on kick-returns. His a confidence player and was one of our better performing player late last season.

McKinnon does support better but I think thats the only area he is stronger than Brown.

Moltzen I like at halfback inside Marshall.

If it were up to me i would start with Moltzen at half, Mckinnon at fullback and Brown on the wing.
If Mckinnon doesnt perform then i would be more than happy for Brown to shift to fullback or for us to explore other avenues.
I also believe we will see Utai at some stage in the first half of the season.

Brown & Mackinnon both were uninspiring last night, Brown seemed to dog an early high kick, started to go for it then pulled out and let it bounce, Mackinnons effort on a rampaging ( I walk quicker) Hindmarsh intercept was embarrassing.
I'm leaning to Brown though

Rule Number 1: Pick a good defender at 1\. Brown and Moltzen are poor defenders at 1 and continually get stuck in 'no mans land'.

While getting on in years, McKinnon can do it all. Defend; Attack; Support… Brown may get better if he gets a few months at Fullback for BRET, but that seems to be given to Leichhardts new favourite son... Jake Mullaney!

Missed the game last night :frowning: lucky i didnt travel an hour and a half to get there then i suppose. When brown let it bounce was it in a safe situation or could parra have potentially got the ball back?

With Brown there was no real pressure to start off with but because he chose to let it bounce, by the time he secured the ball he was back in goal and had three parra players all over him. Result - goal line drop out.

Either one of the two in Brown or McKinnon.

No time for Moltzen as a fullback as I cannot get the images of him leaving balls rather than putting his body on the line. A fullback with 100% commitment to the ball is required and I don't know if Moltzen is it.

Also I am not sold on the idea of returning a playmaker to the back. It merely confused out attack in the later Hodgo years and he was one of the finer examples of a fullback with playmaking options.

It would hinder the development of either Moltzen or Lui to have them in limbo IMHO and would rather see one play State Cup than play out of position in the NRL.

When has Moltzen defended poory at fullback??????? I recall him pulling off some great trysaving tackles. I cant recall Brown being tested so cant comment on his defence from fullback.

Moltzen in my eyes is a top defender at fullback. He was initially good under the high ball but for some reason lost confidence in this area. I believe he could regain this confidence and be a success. His kick returns have always been an issue. This is an area he would need to improve dramatically. He doesnt need to be a kamakaze like Hunt, he just needs to return the ball with a bit more conviction. Im certain he could improve this part of his game. The reason im still open minded about Moltzen at 1 is because if he was to succeed there, it would give us the best balance possible for our team. The problem is for Moltzen to turn around his demons as a fullback this year he has to do it after a major injury. Its a big ask.

Im totally off Mckinnon at the moment. For me, he doesnt even come into contention until he really puts some good games together.

Brown would have to be the fave for round one at the moment, but id be giving Daniela time there this weekend to see how he goes, and id be bringing Moltz back in State Cup at fullback with the view to having he, Lui and Ayshford all in the starting side a few weeks into the compitition.

watching last night and I know it's a trial but I didn't think McKinnon offered much, defence was a bit ordinary but I continue to like Browns positional play he has very good awarness as a FB and is rarely if ever caught of position.

most 'desperate' try saving tackles can look spectacular…. Billy Slater has been doing them for the last 6 years! Most that I've seen Moltz pull off have been the result of him defending on his heels waiting for the ball carrier. While he might get a positive result and Ray Warren sings the praises as the cameras zoom in, technically he has still made an error.

If the attacking team gets through the line, I prefer my Fullback to attack the ball carrier, reducing thier time to find options...

Now thats an interesting one Watto. Your calling him a poor defender yet u say he gets a positive result. Now i get what your saying, but who cares if you think he's technically making an error, as long as he makes the tackle. Some players instincts are unconventional, and maybe Moltz has an uncanny knack for sitting back and nailing the ball carrier rather than rushing forward. Like you said, he gets a positive result, so thats good enough for me.

your talking about the ones he got Sirro….he's also conceded 69 Tries in 2009 & 2010 while playing Fullback?! (probably a little unfair, but I'll use it for now  )

I am not all that suprised by reports that McKinnon looked a little out of sorts. Remember it was the trials last season that saw him really begin his injury riddled 2010.

Moltzen offers more in attack.
Brown is safe and has great kick return ability.
Mckinnon is a much better supporting fullback and has experience.

hahahahaha, yes a little unfair mate. Of the tries he did concede, im sure most fullbacks would have too. The thing with defending at the back is, your at a huge disadvantage, and if we have a fullback that can SOMETIMES pull off those trysavers, then im happy with that. Every fullback will get beat in one on one situations more often than they will make the tackle.

Lame.com

I liked king sirro's idea of trialing GEOFF DANIELA @ FULLBACK, see how he goes and if he's a performer = he gets the spot.
Out of the 3 mentioned, defo MOLTZEN because Robert "Ugly" Lui is the full time HALFBACK.

Who is the best player with the most potential out of all three. To me it is Moltzen by a fair bit.

Moltzen imo has to be in the team. Either at the back or if Lui isn't up to it at 7.
