Melbourne Cup 2020

I don’t understand why people suddenly worry about the horses Melbourne Cup day. You don’t hear from them the other 364 days a year.

Surprised betting agencies are not offering punters exotic bets such as First, Second, Third & Deceased.

If horse racing is bad, how evil must fishing be. Not only are you pulling fish out of the ocean, you’re taking them home, cooking and then eating them. Barbaric.

My opinion ....too many horses entered in the Melbourne Cup are in for the prestige ..not actually winning

Might explain the issues with horses now breaking down

Its sad.... it really is, though stopping racing because of it also isnt the answer.

The vegetarian catch cry is "eating meat is cruelty". In some cases it is, though if the whole world went vegan/vegetarian, domesticated cattle and sheep would become almost extinct within a decade, millions if not billions of lives would never come into existence each yr, to for the most part live a decent life until they meet the fork.

Same as the pitbull, I dont endorse dog fighting, but the strict rules of the sport say if a dog turns on either an owner or referee inside the ring it was to be destroyed. While dog fighting was in its prime ( i know how poor a statement that is), culling of unstable animals had the gene pool as extremely human friendly, now the backyard hardman hero has its hands on the breed, we have violence machines bred for looks over purpose, with disregard for temperament. Similar sentiment with Greyhounds, they dont work, they for the best part disappear.

Domesticated horses, they take up alot of resources. If they dont work, I doubt they exist in any real numbers. Domesticated horses die in any number of pursuits when at work.

Dwyer, Tuiaki, McKinnon and the litany of other career ending injuries havent urged Rugby League to be stopped. The difference is the perseverance rehabititation wise when comparing a human being with a horse.

I didnt even bet on the race, i barely ever punt on any form of racing... but that horse that passed today would have lived a better life than almost any other horse on the planet. I just fear the repercussions of knee jerk reactions to these sorts of events, and the reality of what could come to be of bleeding hearts ending and industry that would also end a gene pool.

You make some really good points. It is tragic that yet another horse had to be put down after this year's Cup.

As tragic, though, is that NSW state coffers rely on punters losing their money on racing or NRL and pokies and, well, the ever increasing forms of gambling.

As such, there is no chance it will be banned.

Racing is third biggest industry in nsw
strappers trainers vets horse transport adjustment services studs
Big unemployment ques if they shut it down
Racing 365 days a year it only seems to be the cup where this happens namely the tracks are too hard for European horses, it is not the Aussie bred horses that break down

i think a horse did die, Van Dyck i think had to be euthanised after coping a injury

rip

anyways....................

And 30,000 horses in training, not including yearlings and others currently not in in training
Provides full- or part-time employment for almost 250,000 people
Over A$20billion in betting turnover
It ain't going anywhere regardless of the woke crew

Had someone on Instagram who posted a photo captioned “I don’t support the races, but I like getting dressed up for it”. Sums up the people that are against it

Just like any industry people will always look at the flaws, but I’d say 99% of race horses are generally well looked after and cared for. Tragic news yesterday and it just gives the people more ammo unfortunately

Mate I am the furthest thing from woke that you will find. Im not calling for it to be banned. I used to be right into it up until about 5 years ago. For me right now, its not for me. I can get past the fact that the "industry" is basically just for gambling (bookies always win) and in particular The Cup is basically to get pissed and make bookies richer and a few horses die.....not for me

I remember a guy opening a butcher shop in Perth some time ago which was to sell horse meat. His shop was picketed and he got death threats.

Hope no horses die this year.

Anthony Van Dyck died

Its sad.... it really is, though stopping racing because of it also isnt the answer.

116 Horses died this year racing

conservatively
8 races a day is nsw qld Victoria south Australia and wa
I have not included NT and tas act as they dont race everyday or carnival days where they have 10 races on a saturday
That is approx 14,600 races per year in Australia

Stats are a funny thing. Melbourne Cups since 2013 = 7 Deaths in Melbourne Cup since 2013 = 7

The numbers in the Cup are due to overseas horses just not used to racing on the harder tracks in Australia in such big fields ..many fields in the UK racing in the longer events have less than 10 horses

The woke have the opinion horse racing is bad

It is bad ...why don't they refund your losing bets ..not my fault the Jockey is a knob and the horse was crap
